14 million people in the UK live below the poverty line 13:33 - Jan 7 with 17482 views | blueasfook | That's a staggering (and shameful) 21% of the population. Absolutely disgraceful for one of the world's leading economies.

(and these things alone mean your standard of living is better than a few billion people). But if your neighbours have all the above, plus two cars, and can afford a family holiday every year, whilst you do not, then stats say you are.

What standard of clothing? What security of tenure do you have for the roof over your head? What quality of food forms your regular diet? Why is it that some people seem happy to define life as mere existence when they themselves can live?

14 million people in the UK live below the poverty line on 14:02 - Jan 7 by OldFart71 | Agreed. It is a scandal and it brings into question why we give aid to Countries like India when we are the firth richest and they are the fourth richest in the World. May I say I am not against wealth and many who are wealthy keep millions in work and provide taxes for Government. Unfortunately we have had glutenous greed by many running Companies where bonuses and wages to those at the top have gone beyond what is considered fair whilst some of these Companies such as Water haven't been doing the job they are paid to do. I do believe current Governmental policies will make the situation worse in the short term. Whether in the long term things will improve I don't know as there are many arguments surrounding these policies. one thing is for sure and that is those that are wealthy will not suffer. |
Look after your own first. The End.

Obviously it includes people who may not make great life choices but it'll also include millions of hard working people having to make the choice between feeding themselves or their kids, or between having to eat or put the heating on You're blaming the wrong people

Even if we go back to the moment we started gathering statistics on this, they'd make up a whopping 0.3% of the voting population if they were all eligible to vote (which they definitely won't be). So that's nonsense Benters. As is your jibe about people getting tattoos, it's as lazy as the avocado toast.

Don't bring facts in to it. Doesn't fit the anti labour narrative. A 6/7 year old report is much better.

That would certainly help. Last year tax payers forked out approximately £27,000,000 to fund interpreters for immigrants claiming benefits. Still, look at the benefits.

I have a visa, I'm not asking the government here to provide an interpreter, I don't claim benefits, and our spend per month adds to the economy. But that won't satisfy you, no, you just think everyone should support your views. Maybe if you where one of the 14million living in poverty, you might think differently

Source? I've found this which suggests that number is for 5 years. Not one https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/01/04/interpreters-benefit-claimants-c Never let the truth get in the way of a good bit of xenophobia though, hey?

Apologies, yes 5 years. However, Last year nearly a million calls to the DWP universal credit helpline required an interpreter. Would you agree that it is a significant amount, at a significant cost.

Would you agree that though a significant amount it is not the reason 14 million people in the UK live in poverty? And that there are benefits to immigration, such as the benefits you bring to the country you are lucky enough to have emigrated to?

I wouldn't know the answer to that, and i very much doubt you would. Of course there are benefits to immigration, just the skilled people that the country requires, much like Australia. Immigrants flocking to the UK to claim benefits, are a drain on government resources, and i'm pretty sure that is not helping the 14 million or so that are estimated to be living in poverty.

Strangely enough I do know the answer to that. A few people crossing into the UK on boats are not the reason that 14 million people in the UK live in poverty I'm glad you have at last seen the benefits to immigration ( took a while considering you're an immigrant yerself)
