14 million people in the UK live below the poverty line on 10:32 - Jan 8 by leitrimblue
Would you agree that though a significant amount it is not the reason 14 million people in the UK live in poverty?
And that there are benefits to immigration, such as the benefits you bring to the country you are lucky enough to have emigrated to?
of course there are benefits to immigration. the uk has been a huge beneficiary - economically and culturally - from managed and gradual immigration over decades (and before that over centuries). but what is happening currently - almost 3 million net in 4 years - is utterly without precedent for the uk. plus, immigration now is very different from immigration pre-brexit. pre-brexit the vast majority came to work, and they were highly qualified, they wer net contributors to public funds. post brexit most, by a significant margin are here for reasons other than work, and amongst those here for work there has been a big shift to the less skilled, and in total there is a net draw on public funds. even the economic case, which was very strong pre-brexit, is much weaker now.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

You may be right, I don't live in the UK post Brexit so it's hard for me to comment purely from experience.
What is clear though, is that 14 million people in the UK live in poverty and that a few people crossing on boats are not the reason for this.
Even though people seem way happier to discuss people crossing on boats rather then 14 million people living in poverty.
Last UK election for instance there was a daily discussion on plans to stop the boats from all parties. But I didn't hear to many plans for ending poverty in the UK

statistically the people crossing on boats are an irrelevance (in terms of humanitarian concerns, legality, and the criminals who transport them there are of course different issues). the issue seems to be symbolic of things being out of control but relative to the 3 million net figure the numbers are neither here nor there.

So what is the reason for this post Brexit shift into less appealing (from our point of view) migration outcomes ? Could it be that refugees and compromised individuals were 'shared around' the European Union but now are shuffled off to the United Kingdom, or is there an increase in distress worldwide (mainly driven by wars) that is contributing to an overall increase in undocumented migration ?
That’s a daft metric to measure poverty - if you are using a percentage of median then it would be literally impossible to eradicate poverty. Using such a measure would throw out a significant number of impoverished in even the most egalitarian societies like Norway.
I guess a year on year compoarison using a percentage of the population within that threshold (to take account of the huge population growth of the last 20 years) would be most useful. That said surely it will be skewed by the ever increasing numbers of pensioners in this country. And whilst there are many pensioners in poverty- their outgoings are likely to be less than 60pc of the working age population, given many will have no mortgage and no dependents.
I don’t doubt poverty has gone in the wrong direction during the years of austerity and post GFC, but this feels like a rage bait headline that doesn’t really tell us anything. It doesn’t even reflect inequality given the median wage is more reflective of the working population than the mean which would be skewed by a handful of outrageous high earners.

That’s old data, and I would be interested to understand what definition of poverty line is being used.
The standard uk definition is 60% of the median income, which is the middle income of the UK population. The median salary in the UK is £37,340, so the poverty line is set at £22k.
While £22k is low, not sure that is my definition of the word poverty, which is a very powerful and emotive term when used without understanding the underlying definitions.
Agree. Am on several £K below that definitition but with care still able to both eat & heat as well as run a car (tho mileage <3k miles p/a) & have a dog (they ain't cheap to keep!).
Efficiency and progress is ours once more Now that we have the neutron bomb It's nice and quick and clean and gets things done Away with excess enemy But no less value to property No sense in war but perfect sense at home...
The sun beams down on a brand-new day No more welfare tax to pay Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light Jobless millions whisked away At last, we have more room to play All systems go to kill the poor tonight

Let's see if things are drastically better in 4 years time. I doubt they will be. Starmer has already pushed more pensioners and students into poverty. But hey, junior doctors already on 40k salaries got a nice pay rise so there's that.
You forgot the train drivers....

That would certainly help. Last year tax payers forked out approximately £27,000,000 to fund interpreters for immigrants claiming benefits.
Still, look at the benefits.
There are 9,630,000 taxpayers in the UK.
So you are complaining that we are paying about 50 p per year in our tax to cover the cost of every interpreter needed for those immigrants ... despite not being one of those taxpayers yourself.

Foreign aid is not what is keeping people(and by extension, the country) poor. A lack of infrastructure, affordable housing, healthcare, education and an obsessive focus on making cuts, offering tax breaks to the wealthiest and demonising the most vulnerable in society from 2010 to 2024(?) are far more to blame.

The clue is in the word "Benefits"

3 main factors in the immigration increase not in order of numbers):
1 Hong Kong residents with British links were allowed to move here. 2 Ukraine war (far bigger impact on Poland & Germany) 3 Massive increase in incomers, especially family members, from India (not sure about other Asian cricket-playing nations);
I genuinely don't know why our last allegedly-anti-immigration govt allowed in hundreds of thousands of Asians. I am sure there are credible explanations.

I have a visa, I'm not asking the government here to provide an interpreter, I don't claim benefits, and our spend per month adds to the economy.
But that won't satisfy you, no, you just think everyone should support your views.
Maybe if you where one of the 14million living in poverty, you might think differently
Whatever you may say, you are part of what Robert Jenriick has called an alien culture.
Indeed, many British abroad over the centuries have made little effort to adapt to the cultures they live in. Just take the Raj, countries like Australia where the indigenous language and culture were replaced, or these days all those Brits in Spain who don't learn the language and live in silos but still put tremendous strain on the health service in Spain.
And you didn't answer my question about whether you have learnt the main language where you live.
