14 million people in the UK live below the poverty line on 05:07 - Jan 10 by Ryorry
Our education system is in need of drastic improvement then (as if we didn't already know).
Do you really think current levels of migration are desirable or sustainable? When Tony Blair starts to say it needs to be controlled, I think people should listen. It’s ignoring people’s views that leads to the likes of Farage and Brexit.

I'm sure if we met, we'd get on like a house on fire. After all, my best friend has views which are diametrically opposite to mine.
When i lived in the UK, my friends in Ipswich and the surrounding areas used to congregate in the Greyhound fairly regularly. We all came from very different backgrounds, and probably differed in our political views, though we never talked politics.
I'm sure if we met we would get on very well, this is often the case if you can all put politics to one side.
Perhaps I should listen to my own advise!
If you ever visit Thailand, and that really applies to any town supporter, I would love to meet up for a glass or two of whatever takes your fancy!

We weren’t talking about different elements of Spanish culture, it was a general conversation! It most certainly would be the view of most Spaniards. I’m very much getting the impression that you haven’t spent much time in Spain, with Spanish people? As I said, the differences are extremely minor. Not sure how we got into this point tbh, but it’s pretty clear you don’t really know what you are talking about.
I wouldn't say that this post has kept me awake at night but I think it is funny (and not necessarily funny ha-ha.)
Imagine you are a pretty standard North London suburbs bloke and you go into a pub in Yorkshire and talk about how there is little cultural difference between Skipton, say, and Barnet. You would get some pushback. Now consider if you were a Madrileño amongst Catalans in Barcelona stating that there was no major difference between the cities ~ you would not have to be fluent in Catalan to get the drift of the invective concerning parentage and bestiality that came your way.

Whatever. We started off talking about Spanish culture generally, now you’re breaking it down into subsections. I lived with Spanish people from Madrid, Extremadura and Andalucia. No Catalans that I remember. Also never lived with any Welsh people. Also never been to Barnet or Skipton. Also lived with lots of southern Italians at various points (also in Spain). Culturally more different to UK than the Spaniards imho

The cultural differences are very minor. Spanish people love boozing and partying until (very) late. Religion plays a very small part in most younger Spanish people’s lives in most metropolitan areas. I’m not saying the culture is the same (thank goodness) but the differences are very small!
I'm pretty sure the majority of Spaniards would not describe their culture as a 'love of boozing and partying until very late'

Not that much difference. I lived and worked in the Canaries for two years.
I've spent quite a bit of time in Spain myself, Madrid, Saville and Ibiza mainly. Though I've never actually lived in Tenerife I've spent quite a few winters there as the in laws use to live there and had an excellent empty granny flat we use to abuse. Apart from Ibiza, the majority of my time in Spain was spent living with Spanish people, family and friends mainly. I've also had the Spanish niece and partner ( a good friend) living here in Ireland with us for a year recently enough.
I can believe from your personal experience there would seem not to be much difference. I believe you were working there, so we're probably working alongside and mingling daily with Spaniards.
Though Brits working in Spain are probably the most integrated of the three main brit groups living there ( I know that's over simplifying things enormously).
The other 2 main groups, retired older people and yer classic guiri tourist clearly don't attempt to integrate, learn the language etc. And from my experience yer average Spaniard definitely does not see those groups has a similar culture as there own.
Sorry, shoulda mentioned my partner is Spanish

Same here. I sh1te you not. Tim Yeo sent him a birthday card on his 18th birthday almost 30 feck1n years ago and is been the kinda torie that would make Farage blush ever since. But I love him and wouldn't change a thing about the contrary feck3r.

Having been in bars and at fiestas in Spain where alcohol has flowed until the early hours, one thing I have never come across is the violence and boorishness associated with the British drinking culture.
That is certainly a Spanish cultural difference which is to be commended.

Whatever, ha ha funny this time. Just another instance of someone extrapolating what little they know into an assumed bigger picture at the same time as making little effort to appreciate what is going on around them (and I won't bore you with all the instances of my knowledge of Spain, both as resident and visitor, over the last sixty five years.)

Leitrim, please tell me that is a typo and that you have never spent any time in Saville....
On a more general point about the English working in Spain:

I don't get the impression that many Britons working in Spain work other than in sectors serving British tourists or residents (eg. bar owners, pool attendants, estate agents, financial advisers).
Even British lawyers in the Madrid offices of City firms presumably have as their working lingua franca English, because most international commercial agreements are in English.
Leaving aside the fact that jobs in Spain may be harder to come by, and there may be hidden barriers, I don't suppose that there will be many examples of, say, a British doctor learning Spanish to such an extent that he could practice as a doctor in the Spanish health sector. The contrast with immigrants to the UK couldn't be greater but once again it fits with a general pattern of a reluctance on the part of the vast majority of Britons to learn foreign languages to a decent level.

Yer, that's definitely quite likely in tourist areas. I've met a few English people working as commercial interpreters in Madrid and had a friend who came over while we were there and still works in that sector.
The reluctance of vast swathes of the UK public to learn a foreign language to a decent level really is something that should be addressed moving forward.
I actually have a sister in law who lectures law in a Madrid University ( I married way above myself ). Her, her partner and children all speak very good English. All of my in laws from teenagers to late 80,s speak English well. My father in law in his late 80,s actually moved to Ireland a few years back and lives happily in Sligo Town. Obviously speaks the language, is part of the community there, plays the piano/organ in the church etc. Think most brits of that age would really struggle to adapt to life in a foreign country to that degree

Labour had to pledge not to raise income tax or individual NI as otherwise the tabloids would go berserk and they wouldn't have got in. Can't have it both ways
Well they shouldn't have backed themselves into a corner then, should they ? The Tories managed in their 14 years to make one mistake after another. Now we have Labour doing exactly the same. The economy is in tatters, the Country's debt is increasing, prices will continue to rise due to manufacturers having to pay more in minimum wages and higher N.I. The pound has took a dive against the dollar, costing more for oil and it may be the BoE won't cut interest rates anytime soon and may even raise them so the building of more houses proposed by Labour will be a waste of time as no one will be able to afford them apart from the one's built for Social Housing that are paid for via Councils who haven't got enough money now. We are as a Country in a downward spiral. Lies convinced many to vote for Brexit, but then even the powerhouse called Germany is struggling and others such as Greece and Italy are basket cases. The US will soon be run by Trump who may convince our American cousins but doesn't convince anybody here and with Musk behind him the lunatics have well and truly took over the asylum. Every despot wants other peoples land and the world is either on fire, flooded or at war. "And I think to myself what a wonderful world" NOT.

This is a pretty accurate summary! and we all thought it could t get worse than under the Tories… it has! Much, much worse…

What an ignorant post, another excuse the knock the British. How do you know what the estimated 284,000 Brits are doing for work?
The largest sector is in education. There are surprising numbers also in manufacturing, mining and the science sector - with a caveat that these stats are 12 years old. But you two just continue with the lazy stereotype of drunken overweight Brits by the sea.

I went to university in Spain and then worked in sales there. Lots of bankers/finance workers too. The old leathery Brits downing Stella by the sea do exist, however.
