Beginning of the end. 11:53 - Jan 9 with 7375 views | flykickingbybgunn | Is this now the beginning of the end for most of the old Div 1 boys that got us here ? Burns, Chappers, Woolfy, et al. Those names that will live rattling around in our heads for the rest of our lives like Cooper, Burley, Mills, Beattie and Hunter etc do mine even now. Some are already gone, Jackson, Harness, Fridge. Football can be a glorious but also a harsh game. To those that have already left, may leave over the next month and those that could leave in the summer I would like to say a most profound THANK YOU for what you have given us over the last 3 years. That team was special.
Beginning of the end. on 11:59 - Jan 9 with 6078 views | Rsj13 | But at the same time, I'm not sure many of these players genuinely saw themselves playing Premier League football. Burns and Burgess were rummaging round the lower leagues before, even Morsy - not sure he expected to be captaining a PL team week in week out! A bunch of this squad have lived out their childhood dreams in the past few months. Dreams that they probably thought would never materialise, so I hope that they can look back at Town with the same fondness that we'll look back at them with.

a lot depends on whether we stay up or not, the 3 you mention would be very useful in the championship and are unlikely to be the ones sold to balance the books

Beginning of the end. on 12:04 - Jan 9 with 5964 views | Steve_M | It's been an ongoing process in every transfer window since January 2023, a gradual evolution and improvement of the squad. The issue we have now is that we've risen more quickly than that process can function.

Yeah I’m basing my opinion on us staying up, because I think we will.

Beginning of the end. on 12:21 - Jan 9 with 5640 views | Stewart27 | It was special indeed. The way KM has gone about this has been as classy as ever. They’ve not been instantly replaced/thrown on the scrapheap. They’ve been given their opportunities to stake their claim still. And I actually think they’ve continuously improved this season. And for me it hasn’t felt like any kind of exodus. If it does mean the end of the road for some then it will be sad but I have zero complaints about the way it’s been handled. For what it’s worth I believe most will still have a part to play post transfer window and potentially beyond.

Burgess a bit strange when he was our best performer in the prem for a while | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Morsy I think he said it was always an aim, but he thought the moment had passed, remember he took a step down when he joined us, and only signed because of Paul Cook, who we do have to thank for that. He could easily have joined another Championship side who'd got promoted whilst we sorted ourselves out in League 1.

Me too. There's the danger of planning for a worst case scenario (rather than being fully committed to staying up) and our plans come to fruition.

in this case, the planning for a worst case scenario is sending the 3 on loan rather than selling them, so not a big issue. (i kind of wish burley and sheepy had planned for a worst case scenario after the 5th placed season, may not have had 20+ wasted years!)

I was looking at the Leicester "Foxes Forum" recently and a comment made me smile. "Morsy is a c...t. I wish he played for us".

I'm sure they would love to stay but they have seen the reality of the prem. Most will stay until end of the year at least. Financially their graft has paid off and they have a legacy now forever. Some might stay, some will defo go but they'll still find too clubs as well now. When you look back at someone like Jackson 4-5 years ago. He must still be pinching himself at those promotions and still now playing in a great stadium packed out at Derby from where his career was! (As much as I'm sure he'd love to have ended his career with us).

Nothing lasts forever, everybody just has to shine bright when they can. All of McKenna's squad of L1>Prem heroes will be immortalised in the new East Stand, I reckon, in the East where the sun rises. Glory boys.

Yep. My worry is we sell too many of them in January, leaving us short on players who could be key to us bouncing back if we do go down. I’m probably worrying too much about it though. We probably can’t think too much about that if we need to make space for reinforcements.

which is why i thought it was smart loaning out the likes of edmondson and harness. you can bet it'd cost far more to buy a replacement for burns, chaplin et al than to retain them whilst picking up a chunk of their wages...

I don't think we'll sell many at all, especially those named in this thread. Loaning them out has to be the way to go, as there is a more than 50% chance we will be back in the Championship again and they would make up the spine of the team. Anyone who thinks players like Hutchinson, Delap, Davis, Greaves etc will hang around for a tilt at the Championship are deluded. We'll need our tried and trusted to get us back up.

Very good point about Sami! Bet he pinches himself every time he leads the team out at the likes of The Etihad, Anfield, Emirates, White Hart Lane (or whatever the fantastic new stadium is called) , and then goes up for the toss. Even for a hardened old pro like him it must be living the dream he never expected.

Beginning of the end. on 11:25 - Jan 10 with 3375 views | OldFart71 | Unfortunately we have a choice. Stick with our favourites from previous seasons and get demoted or bring in better players and hopefully stay in the Prem. That's no slur on players from the Ladapo's to the Burns, from the Fridges to the Loungo's and Clarke's who we will be eternally grateful for their efforts. It's sad, but that's football. I'm sure KM would gladly keep any of them if for one minute he thought that they were good enough to keep us up. But he has the owners, his job and sponsors along with supporters who as we know have returned in their droves but would disappear just as quickly if Town dropped a Division and didn't look like they'd return to the Prem anytime soon as with the M.E. years.

I dont think that the number of people going to matches would change much if we were to be relegated. Of course management has to move on. Players come and go. That is the nature of football. But we supporters have an emotional connection with the players who have done well and when they leave or are forced out we feel it with them.
