How many other teams in the top four divisions… 07:36 - Jan 12 with 5465 views | ZapatasMoustache | … have a singular nickname? The Gas strikes me as pretty unusual. I can only think of the Toon.

How many other teams in the top four divisions… on 09:08 - Jan 13 by yorkshireblue | Sunderland is more recent and was a public vote - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2000/feb/22/newsstory.sport4 "The club launched the campaign to find a nickname in December and fans were offered a choice of five alternatives; The Black Cats also proved more popular than The Light Brigade, The Miners and The SOLs." |
That is so tinpot. A nickname should evolve naturally not be thought up by a marketing committee/chosen by a vote.
| Trust the process. Trust Phil. |

How many other teams in the top four divisions… on 08:06 - Jan 12 by Wallingford_Boy | The Reds The Blues The Royals The Us The Robins The Hammers The Iron Hang on, you were joking weren’t you.. ffs |
'The Us' is a bit of a funny one. I can't work out if it's a plural or not. 'The Me' or 'The I' would be singular, but why the definite article on any of them? And would not 'The Us' apply to every single team in existence from a subjective point of view, in which case the question becomes totally paradoxical - a bit like "How many Thursdays are days?" I dunno.

How many other teams in the top four divisions… on 10:39 - Jan 12 by gainsboroughblue | Their nickname is the 'Pirates' I thought 'Gas' was a bit of a self effacing take on Bristol City fans calling them 'Gasheads' and they've kind of taken the joke and done it back to everyone. Similar to the Tractor Boys thing which ended up sticking. I still consider our nickname 'Blues' or 'Town' as plain or boring as it sounds. Like 'Gunners' and 'Gooners' I think there's a difference between a nickname and a moniker. Unless times have changed and I'm just an old fart. |
We are not and have never been "The Blues". Despite the chant of " cone on you blues" at corner kicks, our official nickname is SuperBlues - which is very dull and boring. I am always surprised that we never had a nickname reference to the Suffolk Punch that we wear with pride since its; inception in 1972.

How many other teams in the top four divisions… on 08:56 - Jan 13 by DJR | Sorry, I didn't realise you were the OP and that you intended such a limited definition of nickname. However, and without wishing to come across as a pedant, it seems to me that Towen falls within the Cambridge dictionary definitions of nickname. an informal name for someone or something, especially a name that you are called by your friends or family, usually based on your real name or your character: |
Lol you're right I'm being a daft pedant but it was not a very serious question, I apologise for it getting out of hand

How many other teams in the top four divisions… on 18:25 - Jan 12 by ZapatasMoustache | Lol I posted this then went to the game and didn’t expect nearly so many replies. Apologies, I was using singular as in not plural rather than unique. So my instinct that there were hardly any was right by the look of it! |
School of Science (Everton apparently) Fosse (Leicester) Toon (Newcastle) Pompey (Portsmouth) Tarn (Barnsley) QPR (Queens Park Rangers) Posh (Peterborough) Cod Army (Fleetwood) Salop (Shrewsbury) Franchise (MK Dons) Gas (Bristol Rovers) So there are a few, even if several are very rarely used.

They changed to the horrible tree motif sometime in the mid-seventies. I would guess that their tree nickname was first coined some time after that. [Post edited 12 Jan 11:49]

Sunderland's "black cats' came from a competition that was held to pick a new nickname fairly recently. For that reason I don't like it as it seems contrived rather than organic, which is how I feel nicknames should be. In that respect The Tractor Boys is much better, no-one decided upon it as such, it just came about through other fans being disparaging about us.

How many of those have you made up! Everton are the Toffees. Barnsley are the Tykes. QPR are the Hoops. Fosse? Salop? Franchise? Never heard of them!

Not me that made them up. https://en.everybodywiki.com/List_of_football_club_nicknames_in_the_United_Kingd Salop I have heard of. Agree some of the others are not well known. Many clubs have several nicknames though.

The Franchise was a well known insult for MK Dons when they hiked Wimbledon out of Plough Lane, but I broached this monicker with one of their supporters some years ago and our conversation got quite frosty very quickly.

Wasn't serious when I accused you of making them up, although I did fleetingly wonder whether you would try to persuade us that the budgies are really known as the munchkins, or something like that! Some unusual ones in your link.

I think they do have a singular nickname don't they ... but then most rivals would use that one about each other.
