How many other teams in the top four divisions… 07:36 - Jan 12 with 5477 views | ZapatasMoustache | … have a singular nickname? The Gas strikes me as pretty unusual. I can only think of the Toon.

It' is uncountable but also clearly countable. "This gas is dangerous and those gases are not", for example.

How many other teams in the top four divisions… on 11:30 - Jan 12 by Rocky | Talking of nick-names, the Tractor Boys is of course relatively recent. But when did Sunderland become the Black Cats and Nottm Forest the Tricky Trees? I don't recall those names growing up [many years ago]. |
The Tricky Trees is a particularly crap nickname you have to say Watford's Golden Boys is equally naff

I probably wouldn't stray too far from that prick Tim Lovejoy and the Soccer am banter era for a few of these new 'nicknames'.

I don't know the answer but remember that Forest used to have a coat of arms with two stags on it. They changed to the horrible tree motif sometime in the mid-seventies. I would guess that their tree nickname was first coined some time after that. [Post edited 12 Jan 11:49]

Agree! I think that basically we’re looking for nicknames that don’t have an ‘s’ on the end.

Which seems to be lots. Ironically, the Gas does have an s on the end too!

Lol I posted this then went to the game and didn’t expect nearly so many replies. Apologies, I was using singular as in not plural rather than unique. So my instinct that there were hardly any was right by the look of it!

That's just not true, you can count parts per million of one gas within another gas: 'To make our terminology more precise, the term “gas concentration” alone typically refers to how much of a gas (either in mass or in molecules) is present at a certain time and at a certain location. Parts-per-million, or “ppm”, is commonly used as a fractional unit of measure for concentration. As an example, a methane (molecular) concentration of 2% means that 2 out of every 100 air molecules is methane. Similarly, a methane concentration of 2 ppm means that 2 out of every 1 million air molecules is methane. In the extreme, 100% or one million ppm means that every molecule at that location is methane (pure methane gas).' https://www.bridgerphotonics.com/blog/understanding-ppm-and-ppm-m-gas-concentrat

Even more simply than that: One gas Two gases So gas is singular even if its quantity is indeterminate (like fish)

Sorry, I didn't realise you were the OP and that you intended such a limited definition of nickname. However, and without wishing to come across as a pedant, it seems to me that Towen falls within the Cambridge dictionary definitions of nickname. an informal name for someone or something, especially a name that you are called by your friends or family, usually based on your real name or your character:

In Rugby League, I remember Warrington were known as 'The Wire'. I don't know if that got lost as a result of the clunky re-branding that happened across that sport. [Post edited 12 Jan 10:19]

Warrington are now known as the Wolves, to the ire of lifelong fans according to my mate, and will forever be known as The Wire.

Sunderland is more recent and was a public vote - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2000/feb/22/newsstory.sport4 "The club launched the campaign to find a nickname in December and fans were offered a choice of five alternatives; The Black Cats also proved more popular than The Light Brigade, The Miners and The SOLs."
