Are we struggling for an identity right now? 21:37 - Jan 16 with 2302 viewscbower

At 2 down we suddenly decided to go almost 100% passing from the back after spending much of the game lumping balls forward to o effect at all in the second half. We only look threatening at the moment in flashes when a couple of quick passes offers the chance of a break forwards. Much of the game we now surrender possession but when we do get it, our inclination is far too often to turn backwards and slow it down. Compare this with Forest, who soak up tbe pressure in a similar defensive formation to us but break with far greater forward drive and numbers.
Maybe it's just me, but right now we are neither my backside nor my elbow.

I think that's a fair assessment.

We don't seem to have the ability to counter quickly.

I guess Ogbene would have helped that.

Hutch kept hold of the ball too much too.

We had identity against Chelsea and Fulham, even Arsenal to an extent. No idea what happened tonight.

Letting clarke be with winger he was at Sunderland might help occasionally. Let him get at them wide rather than thinking he has to come inside so davis gets space.

a niche perspective

You can tell, McKenna doesn’t actually want to play 3 CBS. And 5 at the back. It’s not his style and preferred formation. We seem to be stuck between what is needed in the prem, and being true to ourselves. We now play with no number 10 and we seem incapable to getting ‘out’ for huge chunks of the game.

Yes, Hutch has been guilty of that a lot this season.

There was a time tonight I thought we had gone from on extreme to the other, a bit too much of just punting it long and then Brighton just coming back at us.

Still, it’s what the people wanted.

Without laying into Hutch, I had seen his passing/decision making speed up. He is coming back from injury but he did hold onto the ball a bit too long tonight, it's fine margins and we also didn't support him well with option. When we did he made a terrific pass to Burns in space.

A change of GK has led to a change of tactics because we can’t play ‘our way’ with Walton in goal.

Not saying tonight would’ve been any better with Muric in goal, just saying in general.

As said elsewhere think going long most of the time tonight hindered us.

Good post.

I agree. It's always a case of balance. We needed to shore things up a bit with the back 5 and the compact lines mean we have been hard to break down and good on the counter in last few games but thought tonight we probably were too much that way.

We need to remember what got us here. People getting on Walton's back in the first half for a pass out that nearly went to them annoy the hell out of me. That's how we've played and we shouldn't shrink totally away from it.

I think Phillips is great but we missed Morsy and his energy.

Literally. People have been calling for this for weeks.

We need to go back to what we know and has worked for us. That means Muric back, or playing Slicker. Walton can't do it.

We're lacking the personnel right now but you can see why KMcK is looking to invest in greater pace in Philogene, Godfry and perhaps Doak too.

BHA quite clearly switched tactics at the start of the 2nd half. They stopped their high press which was going nowhere and drew us out by defending more deeply. As a result they were able to open us up and prevent us from hitting them on the break as they had players defending deep.

Omari's legs move very quickly but he was always found wanting for pace.

Today we were out-thought, out-scored, out-muscled and out-dived.

I'm positive that when all the new signings are up and running we'll have more options in games such as these.

We needed more depth up front to provide targets for more direct play. How about Delap and Hirst as a twin attack?
Second half Delap had none of our team near him. He needs help.

Feels like a bit of an over reaction when our 6 match form is the best it's been all season!

Regarding the second paragraph - Hurzeler got one up on McKenna.

Was thinks the same. The 3 cbs makes us compact but when nothing is sticking upfront to allow us to counter, and then we go a go as a goal down, we’re a bit too entrenched to change it. It clearly works away. But at home we might need to switch it up a bit. JP and Godfrey will help. And we’re still in the mix. COYB 🙌🏻

Hutch does some really good stuff, but he's so predictable. Just think how good he would be if he wasn't such a monoped.

Not much point to having 3CBs if the backs aren't allowed to bomb up the wings consistently. Burns in his hybrid role did first half, but Leif was quiet.

Going long is ok if they’re decent balls into the right areas. Hopeful punts 2 feet over Hutchinson head probably isn’t the way forward. We need to stretch teams and play to our strengths, namely Delap.

Kept hold of it, or lost it after running in a straight line 10 times with his head down running into blind alleys?
