As Delap is our best ball carrier.... 11:51 - Jan 20 with 2978 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

Would we be better off playing him as one of the 10s behind Hirst?

We don't really seem to be able to link the midfield and attack at the moment.

Half the time Delap has to do the job of a 10 and a 9.

I’ve often thought this

I’m not sure we’d be “better” off but I think it’d add something else for sure or at least something different but problem being I guess , is when it comes time for a change who do we put on to replace both / one of them ?

A few have suggested having Delap in the Steve Whitton wide forward role, which is where he played for Hull. I can see it happening IF we get another striker in the transfer window.

I didn't think he'd be our 9 this season, perhaps wouldn't have been had we been a bit more successful with landing another striker.

But you can't really look past him now unless we got a better option in, which feels unlikely

This, I feel, is more to do with something KM mentioned yesterday - we were not getting our shape right.

Too slow to support Delap - which stems from Morsy and Cajuste not getting up quick enough (IMHO).

Get up quicker and we can support Delap and link the midfield to the attack, as you say.

I'm not averse to using Delap wide right, for example but I think we need to address the above first.

While having a forward unit of

-------------- Hirst ----------------
Philogene - Delap - Hutchinson

would be an interesting and perhaps productive experiment, it would make the 60/70-minute rotation somewhat trickier. Unless perhaps we bring on Szmodics as the striker at that point.

I actually think Broadhead is our best ball carrier - and the link up play he provides is what we miss when he doesn't play.

No, because we need him in the 9 role, absolutely. I think Omari has been feeling the pressure of being the chief ball carrier in the supporting striker roles and with Philogene here now, a similar sort of player I think if a bit more direct, Omari might well feel the burden lifted a bit and those two can do a lot of the link up play between them.

I always thought broadly would get kicked out of the game at prem level, but he has been great. If anything he gets more space and more time on the ball.

Think he has shown he is too effective to use elsewhere now, he will be our main man up top for the rest of the season, you'd think.

With Philogene now we should be able to fulfill this a bit easier, mind. Broadhead, Omari and him make that a very exciting three behind, and they are all good ball carriers.

Omari is a good ball carrier, but needs to be better at decision making / final ball to be effective.

KMc’s biggest decision to make in games ahead. Three centre backs or 3 behind Delap. We can’t have both.

Not yesterday. He was running around in circles most of the time not knowing where to go. Don't get me wrong I love him to bits but yesterday, well I think it was a bit of an eye opener for him.

I'd be going there CB's at Liverpool and then back to our usual against Saints.

Either way, the absence of Chaplin linking the play is noticeable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Delap in this role. Good shout. Goals are drying up so getting Hirst in this side too is a, “yes” from me

It's a good shout. Sign another 9 and i'd like to see us try this for certain games, it would certainly allow us more opportunity to hold the ball / get up the pitch when on transition.

Get Hirst and Delap in the team. Broadhead and Delap behind Hirst would worry most defences in a 3 - 4 - 2 - 1. However, our central midfield is the problem. We are short of quality.
Morsy has been great but the Premier is a bit of a stretch for him. Phillips was obviously good enough in the past but is a bit of a mystery now. Taylor has his qualities but is not a playmaker. Cajuste is the only one that can really compete at this level. A back up number 9 and another midfielder like Cajuste needed in this window.

Broadhead carries the ball very well. I was watching him the other day and he has a different style to someone like Omari; the latter twists and turns while the former seems to manage to stay facing his direction more and seems to "strafe" with the ball.

Chaplin should get a mention for being able to very quickly pick and play an incisive pass. When we're missing both CC and NB we look a less threatening side, IMO, with the link between defence and attack not being as clear.

I'd like to see Hirst come on and keep Liam on for a bit, drop him behind Hirst and I really think that could cause any defence issues, especially towards the end of a game.
