Ashton pumping oxygen in faster than KMac can breathe it on 19:56 - Jan 21 by Marshalls_Mullet | Fingers crossed. I hope that behind the scenes Ashton and co are working on building a much more sophisticated scouting network, that will bring a more competitive transfer strategy in the near future. At the moment, we are buying well known young players for top dollar. [Post edited 21 Jan 19:57]

I think part of the problem is that pretty much any young player good enough for the Prem is already being talked about. There simply aren't the "hidden gems" you can get in the EFL. It's only the youthfulness which is keeping them within our price range. Adding experience on top bumps the price up still further.

More thinking of signings from abroad. More in the mould of Cajuste.

Big fan of George hirst personally but extremely worried about his injury record over the last two seasons and tbe favt he has to not only be fit but also firing quickly if he is going to remain as our only recognised option striker. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You do realise that our starting striker this season has as many goals as our starting striker last season had at this point of the season, right? It’s all the other positions who haven’t scored as many, which are the ones we’re upgrading.

And we had exactly the same issue last season. Not enough depth in the striker position.

Fiasco? We signed Liam Delap in the summer.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in what I wrote here. The fiasco bit relates to the last minute scramble we had to try and get another striker in ultimately without success. Broja, latte lath apparently and I'm sure there was another all of which crumbled before us.

Agreed. I'm not sure whether we're even in the market for a central midfielder yet that is the biggest need behind a striker.

Yes depth is clearly needed but I'd also argue that chance creation is very low we've added 2 more ball carriers disrupters if you like can break the lines, and do the unexpected hopefully we have a sizable chuck left for a striker given we've saved at least 16 million if figures quoted are correct we also definitely require some more dynamism in centre mid too I feel

This - our strikers actually didn’t contribute a huge number of goals last year. Some important ones yes, but Broady and Chaplin were top scorers. Philogene will give us more penetration- especially on those fast breakaways. For me he looked class, he was the one silver lining on Sunday!

Half the division is trying to sign a striker. And anyone who comes in here will know they will be second-choice at best behind Delap.

At the time it felt as if Delap was never signed with the intent of him leading the line - hence the pursuit of Ioannidis, Broja, Nelson, Latte-Lath et al. Delap ended up playing as the main man, apparently out of necessity, and has been an absolute revelation. I think that it's right to suggest that our attempts to bring in a No 9 over the summer were somewhat of a fiasco, especially when we fixated on the seemingly perma-crocked Broja for so long, and even seemed (at one point) happy to sign him even though he was injured at the time.

I agree 100%, we need another forward to play the Delap role, even from the bench, if we cannot get that we will struggle.

I personally think it's a myth that Delap wasn't bought to play as a #9 for us. He has all the attributes (as clearly demonstrated) to be a #9 who causes mayhem amongst centre-backs and creates opportunities for #10s and KMc needs and will have identified exactly that sort of player for the #9 role.

Ashton pumping oxygen in faster than KMac can breathe it on 11:48 - Jan 22 with 1116 views | OldFart71 | Of course the main problem with fifteen new players since last season is integrating them into a unit that performs to a regular high standard, which as we know isn't happening. There have been some very good performances mixed with some pretty poor ones and I don't include the likes of the Man City game. But I suppose it's to be expected when we are bringing in players that are either from the Championship or players that currently don't fit in with their Premier League clubs needs. We cannot compete with other clubs currently due to fair play rules and the mere fact that a dozen players needed to be brought in before the season started due to loans, players no longer considered good enough, injuries and a retirement.
