I'll say it here now... 12:14 - Feb 3 with 4407 viewshoppy

As disappointing that Saturday was and the mood on here since, I still believe we're going to do it and stay up.
Might be by the skin of our teeth, maybe on the last day and possibly even down to a very tight goal difference, but that would be as much as we need.
With 14 games left, I'm not giving up hope or belief.

I don't think we have written it off, I think the players have. Thats the issue.

Sorry, but that's nonsense. The players won't have written it off. There's still 14 games to play.

Saturday was a kick in the nuts, but the OP is all about keeping some perspective.

I don't agree that the players have written the season. Why would you even suggest that - there is clear evidence that they care.

Recent games have been a proper kick in the balls, but we need to remember it wasn't so long ago we turned over Wolves away, beat Chelsea 2 zip, went to Fulham and probably deserved to win. Really its only Saturday & Brighton in our last 10 games where you would say they were dropped points vs. expectation. I don't think we played too badly on Saturday, just some of that decision making in the final 3rd and a couple of really cheap goals to give away. On another day we could've won it 2-1 and the sentiment would be entirely different. All if's and but's though innit.

We've still got Wolves at home, now that IS a must win. Its unlikely we'll stay up but its in our hands, and tbh if we were 3 points behind with 4 games left I wouldn't be ruling us out so I'm certainly not with 14 left.

If we’re 3 points behind with Four games left I’m confident we’d survive.
The last Two seasons both of them fighting against the odds to reach the ultimate goal we achieved.
That level of intensity, success and belief will again stand us in good stead. Keep the faith everyone and remember, there’s always a team that falls right into the relegation clutches.

I’m struggling to see us staying up. Too many things going wrong at the same time (not taking our chances, midfield a bit porous, the wobbles at the back). Maybe this new keeper will help though. I’ve certainly not given up hope that we’ll improve, but the parts of the puzzle aren’t fitting together so far.

It's not nonsense, you are just self-soothing by failing to accept what happened. If you can't motivate yourself when you are a point from safety, and playing the Premier League's worst-ever team (points-wise) at home, you won't be able to motivate yourself for how tough the relegation battle is. Maybe you didn't see the game, but the players came out looking beat, we had no inspiration, it was playing to patterns, some of the newer players were playing individually but not within the team, and when we went 2-1 down there was no flair, no push, just patterns and when the whistle went we looked accepting of it.

We are down, we have lost the mental battle, it may take some time for some supporters to accept that, but that's what has happened. We had the fight earlier in the season. It has gone.

Admire the positivity, but the game was there for the taking with 30 mins left on Saturday. And the players had zero confidence or belief in breaking one of the worst ever PL teams down.

Fixture list is royally f**king us too, with Villa (buoyed by Asensio and Rashford signing) and Spurs (rejuvenated with first-choice defenders back) up next.

No offence, but your first paragraph really pisses me off, because it's an example of taking a low point and projecting it onto the rest of the season - the definition of pessimism.

You could just as easily (and far more constructively) take the high point of just SIX games ago when we were beating Chelsea 2-0 and project us rising up the table and challenging for Europe!

All things are possible still (not the Europe bit, mind!) it only takes a couple of fluky wins (we're due some) and the picture looks COMPLETELY different.

My issue is, more often than not, we've collapsed once conceding of late. Fulham we scored straight away afterwards so it's hard to judge. But other than that, Forest, Palace, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Arsenal (though we stayed resolute defensively), Brighton, Manchester City, Liverpool's second, Southampton's second. It didn't feel like there was a chance of a comeback. The likes of West Ham and Everton from earlier the season can be thrown into the mix. Even Wolves were all over us after the equaliser and we, for once this season, got lucky.

I think it's becoming a vicious circle. The fans don't believe because it feels like the players don't believe, but the players struggle to have faith as there's not much of it from the stands. In fairness, the atmosphere wasn't too bad after Southampton's opener and, sure enough, the team regrouped and got back on top. But, more often than not, since the Manchester United game, the opposite has happened - on and off the pitch.

I think the fans do believe, in large, but when it doesn't happen on the pitch you can start feeling the enthusiasm being sucked out as games go on, especially when you go 2-1 down and need to score immediately and we revert back to tip tap at the back, people just lose interest.

What happened is that we lost the game. We missed an opportunity to gain 3 points and, instead, we gave 3 points to one of our rivals. It was very frustrating, yes, but to conclude that the players have written off the season is way OTT and, as I said, complete nonsense.

Yes, I did watch the game. For what it's worth, I thought that we were much the better side overall, but we made too many bad decisions in the final third and we were undone by 2 defensive lapses/mistakes, for which Southampton punished us. The reverse of what happened against them last season.

I don't think there was a lack of motivation or inspiration. For large parts of both halves, we took the game to Southampton and some of our link-up play, particularly in the first half, was excellent. It was noticeable that, despite drawing the first half, the crowd were very upbeat at half time and cheered the team off.

The second goal knocked the stuffing out of us and, with the benefit of hindsight, I think taking off Broadhead was a mistake (although he may have been cooked, I don't know). The game petered out when they scored in the 87th minute, which was very disappointing.

You say we have lost the fight and mental battle. I disagree and, as I said in my earlier post, there are still 14 games to go. We are not down, at least not yet. We can only control what we can control and, as supporters, we still have a massive role to play. We can either continue to get behind the team (as we did on Saturday) or we can allow the sort of doom-mongering that you have shown in this and other threads since Saturday to fester into the crowd on match days. Tell me, which of these options would give the team the best chance of turning our recent form around?

If you want/need any inspiration, look at the way in which the Forest fans stuck with their team throughout the past two seasons, when it was widely acknowledged that the atmosphere they created directly contributed to their staying up - including the many difficult times. And look where they are now.

Well, after Cov we shall see how the team fares v Villa the week after then. We have played the top teams (City and Liverpool) as well as the worst team (Soton) so the next match is a good measure if the team is up for the fight or are (as the budgies love to say) "mentally weak" and resigned to relegation. Even a neutral can see that the past 3 games, granted the first 2 were v top teams, were very poor indeed.

More of the tippy tap sideways and backwards passing, reluctance to advance out of our half and fear to shoot at Villa Park would unfortunately suggest the latter.
