Why is he being written off already, Hladky had his doubters last preseason, I remember hearing peoples reaction when we found out Walton was injured and Hladky would be starting the first game of the season.

Valles is Las Palmas no 1. and playing regularly in La Liga (not sure we have the budget for that), Sambas has moved to Rennes hasn't he? |
I'm suggesting they are ones we should've got instead of Muric. But yes, either Valles or Steele would be doable this month. Valles has been dropped due to refusing to sign a new contract.

Valles is off to Betis though - that's why he's running down his contract. Steele is literally the only one of those that's remotely doable today, assuming Brighton would be interested in letting him go.

That's just three off the top of my head, though. There's several others which fit our style way, way more than Alex Palmer.

There will be loads, indeed, I don't disagree with that. However, the window closes today - the perfect signing is inherently more difficult to do under these circumstances. Hence why I have used the work pragmatism. It's far from an ideal scenario.

You seem to be insinuating Ashton and co. have been sat in David Lloyd this morning and thought "sh*t, we need to replace Muric" and fired up their data dashboard. They'll have known for weeks (months?) that Muric hasn't adapted well to our style/setup and will surely have been keeping their fingers on the pulse of the goalkeeper market. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It is the injury to 'Walton' that has meant we are signing a keeper, not Muric's form. If Walton was fit, we wouldn't be signing a keeper today.

| This forum is hilarious! on 15:09 - Feb 3 with 790 views | SaffronWaldenBlues | Walton is injured. If he wasn't he'd have played Saturday, and we'd probably got a point and we'd not have signed a new keeper anyway. It's the Walton injury that has brought this forward, not Muric. He's clearly going to be back up to Muric. [Post edited 3 Feb 2025 15:10]

But Walton isn't the answer either? We all know that deep down, as much as he's a much-loved part of our success story.

Given he is injured for 2 months, no. I'll say again, had he not been injured. We would not be signing a keeper in January. We would have stuck with Walton, Muric and Slicker.

...is that he's going to be our number one. But that's not really based on anything solid. Could quite easily just be a back up to Aro "The Cat" Muric.

| This forum is hilarious! on 14:28 - Feb 3 by portmanking | I'm not suggesting we should've kept Hladky, but we needed someone *like* him. Hladky was comfortable with both feet (Muric couldn't be any more one-footed), moved the ball quickly to start counters and could handle the ball in tight areas and pop it around. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Muric can't surely have been top of the Goalkeeper.com data dashboard in European football for distribution. |
And Hdlaky was heavily criticised (especially on here) in his early days and significant concern about him. Look at the panic posts on here when Walton got injured at the eve of the season starting and a lot of people doubting Hdlaky. But here we are again, keeper hasn't even been in the door 5 minutes and people writing him off! Likewise, in view of the turn of events with Walton's injury and the Muric situation, time was/is heavily running out. Who would you conclude a deal with in the remaining hours?

Jason Steele? Jesus Christ.... So you're going lower than Palmer. And you're also assuming that a) these players are available, b) these players are interested, c) they would be in our salary bracket.

Lower than Palmer? In terms of what? Steele would be a huge upgrade for our playing style, allowing us to build from the back properly.

Valles and Samba have never played for an British team, trained under an British coach and are not imbued with British culture, so they wouldn't even be considered by McK at this moment.

Mea culpa! What I found on WIki "On 7 August 2019, Samba joined EFL Championship side Nottingham Forest on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. He was initially brought in as a backup for on loan goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, but earned his place as Forest's number one after Muric made a number of costly mistakes." The irony!
