7th highest transfer spend this season on 12:35 - Feb 5 by SaffronWaldenBlues | That also highlights how bad the bottom 3 were, and chances are this season's bottom three will do worse than that. Having seen Everton play a fair few times last season, I would describe them as dire, yes! I hadn't realised they had won that many games, goes to show, you really don't need to play good football in the top flight to do well and stay up. |
I still think Forest were at least as dire last season, and their business seems to me at least as good as Everton's. What's noticeable is the bunch of players signed for 'only' 5 million or so. ( There were a couple that cost a LOT more, admittedly.) https://www.besoccer.com/team/transfers/nottingham-forest-fc

7th highest transfer spend this season on 22:31 - Feb 4 by Horsham | Of course it’s a big number but if you compare the last 5 years spending of all the current Premier League team I’d expect ours to be lowest by a fair margin. |
We're certainly bottom by a long way in the squad cost according to this from October. Putting it another way, we may have spent a lot but we are a long way from having the quality of squad that other teams have. https://www.planetfootball.com/premier-league/premier-league-squad-cost-2024-25- 1. Chelsea – €1.26billion 2. Manchester United – €1.038billion 3. Manchester City – €1.017billion 4. Arsenal – €798million 5. Tottenham – €787million 6. Liverpool – €735million 7. Newcastle United – €683million 8. Aston Villa – €475million 9. Brighton – €433million 10. Wolves – €426million 11. West Ham – €414million 12. Nottingham Forest – €398million 13. I think it's just almost impossible to close the gap. Harry Clarke here is almost 3rd choice RB, looks a long way off the level required really for the PL currently......he goes on loan tot he team 2nd in the Championship, they start him straight away ahead of a player who has started basically every game of the season and their fans are raving about him. Ali Al-Hamadi, 'nuff said re your thoughts on ability, btu he goes to Stoke and scores on debut, roasts a defender for pace on the touchline for a cross later in game and NTT20 podcast was waxing lyrical about him Those 2 look so far off where we are, so think we can see how the levels have just gone mental, if they continue to excel at the level below after good starts.....these players we've got currently fall between PL and the Championship, and this season at this level will make them better players for next season - but there's no short cut to getting PL ready players unless you risk it like Cajuste and Phillips and we get 60 minutes between them each week

Precisely- it makes the success stories we have had recruitment wise all the more impressive, IMO.
7th highest transfer spend this season on 19:07 - Feb 5 with 1195 views | ringwoodblue | Money doesn’t buy success otherwise we’d be a lot higher than our current league position. Personally, I think we wasted a quarter of the money on Muric, J Clarke and Philogene but the rest was good money spent. If we drop into the Championship, Clarke and Philogene will likely stay and could prove useful but will never be worth more than we paid for them. Muric, well we pi55ed that money up against the wall as no-one in their right mind will want to pay good money for him.

Money doesn’t guarantee success, but it sure gives you a much better chance. Why do you say we should be higher than our current league position? Our squad value is firmly in 20th position, and isn’t going to climb that table any time soon. We’re playing catch-up, and we have a long way to go before our recruitment/spending gets close to what other teams have achieved to build their current squads.

exactly, our value is barely 50% of the 19th club. our position is 1 higher than it really ought to be!

Where do these figures come from Southampton squad worth more than Brentford for example? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

see djr's post, but i believe it's cost, not worth. so leif's cost would be 1m, even though his worth is far higher

7th highest transfer spend this season on 08:32 - Feb 6 with 991 views | The_Flashing_Smile | We probably needed to spend more than anyone, just to even have a fighting chance. Not only on players too, things like putting in 30-something extra camera mounts for Sky. We were a long way from being a Prem club... suddenly dropped in the Prem due to our rapid rise. Of course we had to spend.

If indeed it is squad cost, the same would presumably be true of many of the players in, say, Liverrpool's.

Still proves the point though that even being the 7th highest spenders this season, we are miles away from all of the other teams. Perhaps proves that maybe we haven't 'overspent' as much as some may think we have and that hopefully, regardless of the division we are in, we will be able to continue to increase the value of the squad over a period of time.

And interestingly, if you look beyond Premier League clubs, Leeds are also above us, and Burnley not far behind. Puts it all in perspective.

Yep! The unfortunate price of success so quickly. Either way, you can't have anything but confidence in the way the owners are consistently trying to improve the club. Me and my lad did the stadium tour a couple of weeks ago and were blown away with how different everything around the ground is. Add in the development of the training ground and future works at Portman Road and you cannot say that we aren't doing everything possible to improve the long-term future of the club.

7th highest transfer spend this season on 08:16 - Feb 5 by Libero | I feel like the one consistent through all our signings (with the exception of maybe Kalvin Phillips) is that they all hold strengths in certain attributes that make them potentially useful, but they *all* require work and coaching, something that McKenna is comfortable with due to his background in Academy football. When developing players they all improve at different rates, we don't *really* have that luxury now, although had we had a little luck during the season that could be quite different. I feel we've overspent on a couple of players, but the recruitment itself has been pretty solid. Players who hold strong attributes, who all have the potential to improve and a good potential re-sale value. I do think we could have done with a bit more Premier League experience in amongst that too, but as I said, had we enjoyed a little bit of luck this season at points, we could be marveling at how McKenna's squad of mostly Premier League inexperienced players had us in X, Y place. I don't believe there's too much wrong with the recruitment, although I think the chap who was previously in charge of recruitment and would have played a part in identifying most if not all of these targets left us at the start of the season? |
Well summed up. For me we have focused to much on the future, not enough experience and muscle for this season unfortunately.
