It's the final straw for me (I'll get my coat). Seriously though his disregard for the environment is off the scale. I'm sure in that fat orange head of his he is playing out a film scene where he is the evil one trying to destroy the earth. He hasn't started badly to be fair. [Post edited 11 Feb 6:46]

If only someone had invented a method of drinking without using suction and a rolled up piece of paper or plastic. [Post edited 11 Feb 7:20]

Because they are a really simple and straightforward change that has, at worst, a tiny minor impact on people. That we aren't taking enough action on some of the bigger climate issues isn't a reason to not bother at all with smaller, easier measures.

Same s***,different day. on 08:15 - Feb 11 with 3370 views | Churchman | Ahhh, those happy days of matinee cinema: sausage beans and chips (my favourite as a child), a good movie (Zulu or something), a Kiora orange drink in a plastic carton with a plastic straw that'll last forever, a little tub of ice cream with a little plastic shovel spoon and a bag of chocolate raisins. Surely it’s not beyond wit of man to design a cost effective bio degradable straw that doesn’t disintegrate in the way described by President Grotesque. Trump will be dead before his four years are out one way or another.

The paper straws can’t even be recycled. Same as those new shîtty paper lids on McDs hot drinks. These companies preach about saving the planet but it’s nothing to do with that, it’s all about cost - it’s all cheaper and saves them loads.

….in fact let’s do away with any sort of receptacle to hold the drink in as well. As far as I’m concerned we should all be drinking directly from our local streams. Cups are evil! And probably racist.

Probably because it’s not just a climate change issue. There’s the oil needed for production of course, but the big driver for change was the problem of plastics and microplastics in the environment which is screwing up all sorts of organisms. Agree with the broader point that it’s not everything - but plastics as a whole have been phenomenally damaging. Anything we can do to reduce the mess we’re making of the planet is fine with me. Same s***,different day. on 09:39 - Feb 11 with 2959 views | DJR | Not sure the reference to a rifle in the OP is appropriate but even more important than paper straws is the following, which the BBC this morning put down to Trump's desire to "drill, baby, drill". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c30d4ernzqjo "BP set to scale back green investments as profits drop sharply Oil giant BP has said it will "fundamentally reset" its strategy as profits dropped sharply last year. It is widely expected to say later this month that it will scale back renewable projects and increase oil and gas production following similar moves from rivals including Shell and Equinor." Putting it another way, Trump's utterances, even without action, can influence business practice as shown elsewhere by social media companies cutting back on moderation, and large US companies ditching DEI policies. https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/02/08/gm-pepsi-amazon-appear-to-re [Post edited 11 Feb 9:45]

Unless you have a disability of some kind, drinking a hot drink through a straw is genuine psychopath behaviour.

A milkshake has fairly similar density to that of water (Ps 1200 kg/m³) but is far more viscous (j = 1 kg/m-s).

Exactly this. Plastic straws aren't a climate change issue, it's about litter and the huge quantities of plastic ending up in the environment.

In my c. whole, massive! 7 months there I never did either. Cold brew, yes. But never hot. What does piss me off though is we bought some really good insulated travel coffee mugs, but the bloody things are too big for the cupholders in cars back here. Grrr, bloody yanks
