Things that you look back on and think ‘wtf was that’ 00:00 - Mar 7 with 8079 views | The_Romford_Blue | Just had something come up reminding me of the weekly ‘clap for the NHS’. Wtaf was that about. The gesture originally was well intended but I wonder how patronising they felt it was. All the while we all had one group of neighbours who were judgmental about who was or was not clapping.

Things that you look back on and think ‘wtf was that’ on 08:34 - Mar 7 by Reuser_is_God | When you look back at that time it was all a bit “wtf” really. I remember queuing up outside the supermarket all around the car park about 2m away from the nearest person, only to get inside & it was an absolute free for all. Could only have a pint in the pub if you bought a sausage roll with it. Pathetic. |
what was the other rule, you we only allowed outside for 30mins or an hour? I forget but think about that, it was like being in prison.

I had a few run ins with people on here over that. There never was any rule at all about the time you could spend exercising - but Michael Gove when asked on TV suggested an hour was sensible. This led to many people believing it was a rule/law - and quite a few got genuinely upset at the idea of anyone cycling or walking for longer periods. That they were solo activities, in the outside, mattered not to the outraged that anyone would be breaking the imaginary rules that they felt we should all follow. Lockdown was end March 2020 so expect there might be some media coverage soon given the 5 year anniversary in a couple of weeks. Or maybe they'll not want to go there given how divisive it was/remains.

Things that you look back on and think ‘wtf was that’ on 09:53 - Mar 7 with 1172 views | _clive_baker_ | The first lockdown was pretty nuts in hindsight. My wife is and was a nurse in the NHS and the conditions they were working in were pretty challenging to say the least. She would get home and basically strip down at the back door, fortunately we had plumbing in the garage so she would stick her clothes in the wash and shower before coming in. I have to say as weird as the 8pm clapping was in hindsight it did represent a societal appreciation for key workers that was appreciated by many on the front line. Of course the government should've followed it up with a fair pay rise, but that's another question altogether. Relatively speaking I had it easy myself, I worked for a business where home working wasn't uncommon already, we just locked the office up and reverted to doing it full time, and it was a straight forward transition. I remember the weather being glorious for what seemed like weeks in that 1st locdown 5 years ago. I drunk a lot though and I noticed it becoming a bit of a problem. Not an addiction per se, but certainly a habit. I found myself cracking open tinnies at 2pm at my desk quite regularly. I came to absolutely hate zoom quizzes. The weirdest one was a football drinking quiz I did with mates. 6 or 7 of us dialled on at lunch time one Saturday, prepared a round of 90's footie trivia each. We took it seriously with audio and video clips etc, a what happened next round, picture rounds and all sorts. We all ended up sinking about 10 cans over a couple of hours and I remember walking dog after it with my 1 exercise token that day thinking what the feck am I doing.

Similar experience of the football quiz. Although I was even incapable of walking the dog afterwards.

That was laughable. People were worried they'd be arrested if the police saw you twice in the park on the same day.

Passed the time I guess. One of our work socials was a cocktail night. We all got a box delivered to our house on the company with various bottles of spirts, a lemon, a few other things we were instructed to order. We had a mixologist dial on and basically talk us through making them and chatting. Laptop on the kitchen counter, all of us just getting progressively fooking hammered on our own. Odd time, but I was definitely one of the lucky ones in terms of my job then. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Things that you look back on and think ‘wtf was that’ on 10:10 - Mar 7 with 1096 views | DanTheMan | It wound my wife up no end. She wasn't an NHS worker but she worked with NHS patients in a facility for people with severe mental health problems. It was long hours for literally minimum wage. She didn't even get any minor benefits during that time because she was not officially working for the NHS, despite all the patients being NHS patients.

That first lockdown was…. on 08:22 - Mar 7 by blueasfook | The weirdest thing was I was away in the canary islands just before lockdown started. When we got back, needed to do a big shop to stock up, but the shops had been looted! There was nothing to buy! Tesco looked like a Russian shop just before the collapse of the Soviet Union! |
A friend of mine from Paris who was able to work remotely) managed to get to the Canary Isles before any Spanish lockdown and happily spent 6 months or so there. I think the restrictions there were in any event less than elsewhere in Spain but it was the weather that was the clincher. Nice! [Post edited 7 Mar 12:18]

Things that you look back on and think ‘wtf was that’ on 10:26 - Mar 7 with 1006 views | DJR | I managed to get out every day of the lockdowns to visit my elderly mother who lived about 5 miles away: there's was a carer's exception. At the start, it was very weird to be virtually the only car on the road. I might add that, as a lawyer, I always looked at the latest version of the Covid regulations, so I knew precisely what I could or could not do, and I pushed the regulations to the maximum (without putting anyone in danger), knowing all the time that they were subject to a reasonable excuse defence. Indeed, the guidance/regulations were a troubling part of the lockdown because they weren't easy to track down, they frequently changed and people didn't necessarily know the difference between what was in guidance and what was in regulations, or the distinction between guidance and regulations. Its not within the control of the general population to stick 1p on income tax though. The absolute incompetence of the government at the time is a separate issue altogether. I don't imagine the clapping was ever intended to be an alternative to fair pay and working conditions. Conflating of the 2 seems to have become a thing where it really shouldn't. Of course you were well within your rights not to clap though.

Disagree. Those people who stood clapping could have demanded the government made good on their promises that the sacrifice of workers would be repaid. There are lots of things people could do but it's harder than standing there filming yourself clapping to post on social media. As a country, myself included, we betrayed the key workers who kept the country running.

I don't disagree but that's a separate issue altogether. Society showing its appreciation for the efforts of front line workers shouldn't undermine that need. That's on the government who failed our public services spectacularly. Not just through Covid but for 7 years prior and 5 years since. I know my wife and her colleagues appreciated the sentiment, but should never have been as an alternative to fair pay and that was never the intention.

Me and one of my mates I was living with took an American football one of the days and were chucking it about across the park and a copper came over and said it was not allowed and we’d ’have to leave and go home’. Pathetic

Things that you look back on and think ‘wtf was that’ on 11:20 - Mar 7 with 794 views | SaffronWaldenBlues | All of COVID-19 was classism at its finest in the UK, and the polite clap was just the tip of it. We worked the NHS to death, underpaid them, sent the poor out to do the "essential" jobs while the middle class and wealthy sat home and collected money, after snatching all the food and bog roll they could get, most of which they ended up binning, while claiming lots of pots of money from the Government to keep them going, running up the national debt and now people are crying about the spending cuts/tax increases... We did this.

Yeah wouldn't have minded being holed up on Fuerteventura for 6 months! The Spanish were really strict about their lockdowns. Police were patrolling the streets and stopping anyone who wasn't out for a good reason (either shopping or a bona fide medical reason). If you got caught being out for no good reason then you got slapped with a couple of thousand euros fine. We left the island just as lockdown started there. It kicked in at midnight saturday, and we flew out on the sunday morning. Other guests at breakfast were telling us the police had come into the bars right on the stroke of midnight and kicked everyone out! [Post edited 7 Mar 11:36]

Eat Out to Help Out was absolutely wild! The Govt footing the bill for 50% off food and soft drinks, which ended up spreading covid around a bit more was the dumbest thing.
