Trump doing his best to fall out with Ireland now 16:54 - Mar 12 with 2927 viewsElderGrizzly

Donald Trump has accused Ireland of stealing its pharmaceutical industry and the taxes they should have paid in the US in a meeting with the Irish taoiseach Micheál Martin

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office he was “going to take back” the country’s rightful “wealth”.

Trump has a golf course at Doonbeg, Co. Clare in Ireland.
I think the Irish would use the course as a toilet if Trump tried it on.
The Irish always have an unexpected way of showing their disapproval.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

The UK taxman 'nicked' cash from me all my working life.
However, I'm not going to waste one of my nukes on Downing St.

How do they get away with their low tax breaks? It's like Luxembourg by the bog.

We get away with it because we are cute hours.

And of course we would charm the birds off the trees

I think Micheál played a blinder at the press event. Once I saw Vance was wearing shamrock socks I knew there would be no unpleasantness.

Keno 5 out of 10 is stretching a point I would guess.

What was the real emphasis of Trunp’s press conference was his hatred of the EU.He has been spending too much time with Farage.

Sadly they are happy to drive the race to the bottom, and a huge part of why we (the UK) struggle to properly tax the tech companies. If Ireland had a Corp tax rate in line with the G7 countries, companies wouldn’t transfer capital/profits across the Irish Sea. They’ve made a great deal of fuss over the Global Minimum tax rate despite it being an incredibly low threshold.

The height of insanity was the EU having to take Ireland to court to COLLECT taxes from Apple, utter madness:

We have been very shrewd over the years enabeling the US multinationals to avoid tax via Base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS). Even the Donald had appreciation of that. Trump said that the Irish are “smart people” who “took our pharmaceutical companies and other companies”.

Ireland has been associated with the term "tax haven" since the U.S. IRS produced a list on the 12 January 1981. Ireland has been a consistent feature on almost every non-governmental tax haven list from Hines in February 1994, to Zucman in June 2018 (and each one in-between). However, Ireland has never been considered a tax haven by either the OECD or the EU Commission. These two contrasting facts are used by various sides, to allegedly prove or disprove that Ireland is a tax haven, and much of the detail in-between is discarded, some of which can explain the EU and OCED's position. Confusing scenarios have emerged, for example:

In April 2000, the FSF–IMF listed Ireland as an offshore financial centre ("OFC"), based on criteria which academics and the OECD support. The Irish State has never refuted the OFC label, and there are Irish State documents that note Ireland as an OFC. Yet, the terms OFC and "tax haven" are often considered synonymous.

In December 2017, the EU did not consider Ireland to be a tax haven, and Ireland is not in the EU 2017 tax haven lists; in January 2017 the EU Commissioner for Taxation, Pierre Moscovici, stated this publicly. However, the same Commissioner in January 2018, described Ireland to the EU Parliament as a tax black hole.

In September 2018, the 29th Chair of the U.S. President's Council of Economic Advisors, tax-expert Kevin Hassett, said that: "It’s not Ireland’s fault U.S. tax law was written by someone on acid". Hassett, however, had labelled Ireland as a tax haven in November 2017, when advocating for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 ("TCJA").

So we scored early and defended like our life depended on it ( our economy does! ).

I like the stuff you post, but ‘we weren’t legally a tax haven by law until 2018’ is not really a hill to die on.
