Jens Cajuste - wishful thinking, or a realistic possibility? 12:47 - Mar 19 with 7034 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

Whilst I appreciate the likelihood of Cajuste playing Championship football next season is fairly low, it isn't impossible. If we agreed with Napoli a £10m transfer fee if we stayed up, then I can't see any movement in that increasing this summer, so is a £10m fee in the Championship possible? I think so.

Just based on transfer dealings last summer/January, Joe Rodon joined Leeds for £11m (Archie Gray the other way so perhaps the figure isn't quite a true representation of Rodon's value). Tom Cannon joined Sheff United from Leicester for £10m. Mark McGuinness joined Luton and Morgan Whittaker joined Middlesbrough reportedly for £6m+ as well.

So the fee seems possible in the Championship, but the only thing I'm unsure of is his wages - does anyone know what Napoli pay him and what we are covering in respect of that now? And also, the obvious one being whether Cajuste would want to play for us in the Championship too. Not an impossible deal to do if you weigh it up. Delap sale will generate some extra funds too.

Financially I don't think the club would have a problem at all with pushing the boat out and making him our marquee signing of the summer, but there's simply no way he'd agree to it as (even if he's formed a genuine connection here) it would be a bit of a waste of his career to spend a season in the Championship.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

He’s not a little bit too good for the championship, he’s miles beyond it.
I’d bit annoyed to see him drop down if I’m honest. Like seeing Toney in the Saudi league

I think there's more chance of Manc City getting a 99-point deduction and Leicester staying up than Cajuste play for Ipswich beyond this season.

Firstly he has fitness issues. Should we be spending time and money on a player that has to be ‘managed’ fitness wise? Secondly does he want to be here? Next, he’s been part of a non existent midfield that has had control for 70 mins in one game this season. He played the last few minutes only of that.

He looks good, great control, runs nicely with the ball. Does he actually hurt teams when it matters? I am not sure. He’d probably be effective in the Championship, but would you not rather that kind of money was spent on a player like Downes?

I suspect he will go back to Italy or a top league somewhere else anyway.

I take your point on the fitness issues, it's been well documented, but I feel like we've got an understanding of the player and how we can utilise him to get the most minutes from him. He's about to have played the most minutes in a season in his career for us (providing he stays fit for another 90mins ish). He can play 90mins too, he's done it on a few occasions this season, but I think it's more McKenna wanting to change it, rather than Cajuste fitness.

He won't play 46/46 games. The demands of Saturday/Tuesday will be managed, but a player of his quality is a no brainer. I'm sure there can be a promotion incentive.

I would love Downes back FWIW, but I feel he's going to be the same transfer fee.

I make it 22 games which is 75% of those played and of those he’s played 90 mins four times - let’s say 20% of the matches he’s played in.

On the basis of that and what he actually contributed, aside from racking up one goal, is he worth £10m? Could we do better? Is he worth the risk? I obviously think not but I’m more than happy to be persuaded otherwise.

And if McKenna goes for it and he wants to stay, like all players while they’re here and giving 100% he’ll get my support.

Usually 5 players don't make 90 mins? Exclude the goalie, that's 50% of players.

The role he plays probably involves more running than most. Its not difficult to understand that position is more likely to get subbed.

Delap has only lasted 90 mins 5 times and played more games.....!

Jack Clarke in 8 starts has been subbed all 8 times. Does he have fitness issues too?
Add Szmodics - 13 starts, 13 subbed
Add Burns - 12 starts, 12 subbed

Money? Likes the area? Settled? Ambition of the club? No idea.

We will see whether he is ‘100% a PL top flight player’ at the end of the season. As a matter of interest was anyone else in for him at the start of the season, bar Brentford who I think ran away because of injury issues or am I thinking of somebody else?

I think it's part of our plan to change the front 4 most games, if you're having to use a sub on a CM every game then that could limit your options if there are any other injuries. How many times were Morsy/Luongo subbed last season?

Part of the situation we're in means we've had to sign players with limitations, either lack of experience or questionable fitness record. I think to progress going forward we need to sign players who are more robust.

Not impossible, if unlikely, that Manc will be docked sufficient points to end up in bottom three. Important we finish above Leicester just in case,

Could see a situation if that happened of City winning an appeal, after the season ended, resulting in 21 teams in Premier League for one season. Be like winning the Lottery.

Stuart Watson said he is likely heading to Spain if Ipswich are relegated.

He also said Jens was over the knee injury and Ipswich have managed to control that situation and nurse him back to full health.

There was a recent interview on this matter shared on youtube.

I am only rampant for you baby.

Jokes aside, I would say if we had Cajuste and Delap in our side next season we would stand a very good chance of going back up, but I don't see either being possible sadly, so we must move on and hope the recruitment to replace is spot on.

I’m really not sure that I agree with your sentiment.
Yes he looks smooth on the ball and usually in a game slides past a couple of tackles but how many times has he played killer passes or indeed took the game by the scruff of the neck and changed the outcome?
He has only just started to last 90 minutes.

How many other PL central midfielders of his physical profile do that? Genuine question. He's our best player and will have countless suitors across Europe this summer, regardless of what we think. He won't be an Ipswich player next season.
