Jens Cajuste - wishful thinking, or a realistic possibility? 12:47 - Mar 19 with 7035 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

Whilst I appreciate the likelihood of Cajuste playing Championship football next season is fairly low, it isn't impossible. If we agreed with Napoli a £10m transfer fee if we stayed up, then I can't see any movement in that increasing this summer, so is a £10m fee in the Championship possible? I think so.

Just based on transfer dealings last summer/January, Joe Rodon joined Leeds for £11m (Archie Gray the other way so perhaps the figure isn't quite a true representation of Rodon's value). Tom Cannon joined Sheff United from Leicester for £10m. Mark McGuinness joined Luton and Morgan Whittaker joined Middlesbrough reportedly for £6m+ as well.

So the fee seems possible in the Championship, but the only thing I'm unsure of is his wages - does anyone know what Napoli pay him and what we are covering in respect of that now? And also, the obvious one being whether Cajuste would want to play for us in the Championship too. Not an impossible deal to do if you weigh it up. Delap sale will generate some extra funds too.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

How many other PL central midfielders of his physical profile do that? Genuine question. He's our best player and will have countless suitors across Europe this summer, regardless of what we think. He won't be an Ipswich player next season.

And how many of them doing that are available for £10m?

Dinky Woodbridge, Felixstowe seafront, the Maybush for Sunday lunch, Copdock Tescos, Christchurch Park, Coes, Waterfront, Museum…. Why would he want to go anywhere else?

"Signing a three year contract with Ipswich, Cajuste said the main reason for him signing was his admiration for the Spring Road viaduct, the wide open spaces of the Bramford Lane recreation ground, and especially the size of Primark in Westgate Street."

Bet Admirals Fish and Chips in Martlesham were a bit hacked off to miss out. Mind you, they’re not as good as they used to be.

I'm led to believe Cajuste prefers the one in Ulster Avenue anyway. And having often sampled their delights about 35 years ago in my mispent youth, I can understand why.

I mean, 60p of chips? Bargain.

I think it's part of our plan to change the front 4 most games, if you're having to use a sub on a CM every game then that could limit your options if there are any other injuries. How many times were Morsy/Luongo subbed last season?

Part of the situation we're in means we've had to sign players with limitations, either lack of experience or questionable fitness record. I think to progress going forward we need to sign players who are more robust.

I'd guess Luongo was subbed in most games.

Any one of the promoted sides (Leeds, Sheff Utd & Burnley probably) would happily pay £20m+ for a proven PL quality midfielder, and Cajuste has certainly proven himself.
The agreement we made with Napoli, to only sign him if we stayed up, was in our interest at the time, especially given his injury concern, but now it will work against us. Had we committed to buy regardless of staying up, we would have numerous full wage loan offers for him next season, and then be ready to welcome him back when we get promoted again.
Napoli will make a few extra million on what we would be paying.

Wasted many a week's pocket money on Ulster Avenue chips whilst attending Westbourne High School. Sigh... TWTD.

Has he though? When he’s played he has been an integral part of a midfield that’s collapsed at best after 20 mins in all bar one game - that he played in for nine minutes plus injury time. Is that all down to Morsy, Taylor and Phillips?

If any PL club let alone those three you mention pay £20m for him I’ll be amazed and will happily put my hand up. I’ve nothing against him - he looks classy when he glides across the pitch and has great control but £20m?? Time will tell.

Jens Cajuste - wishful thinking, or a realistic possibility? on 12:50 - Mar 19 by LankHenners

Financially I don't think the club would have a problem at all with pushing the boat out and making him our marquee signing of the summer, but there's simply no way he'd agree to it as (even if he's formed a genuine connection here) it would be a bit of a waste of his career to spend a season in the Championship.

I expect us to spend again in the Championship competitively and recruit some decent players

Obviously we need one or two central midfielders as a priority. It would be nice to bring Cajuste with us but other PL sides will probably want him

We don't need to sell really but Delap probably goes for a healthy fee, Davis could go and I wouldn't be surprised if someone like O'Shea is either loaned or sold as well

Personally I'd want to keep O'Shea but there will be PL interest in him I suspect, not that we necessarily need to sell him

Muric probably moves on, on loan or is sold and a few of the squad players will probably go like Harness

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

He's not capable of 90 minutes X 46 games. We need a younger version of Morsy. If our recruitment team can find a young midfielder who's a season away from the PL and Championship ready then better to look for that.
Why did we keep on, keeping on buying small number 10's/ wide players when we need a bit of mongrel in midfield?

Whilst the general feeling is that he is miles to good for the Championship, I would have to disagree slightly. Yes, he is a good player, but not outstanding. I wouldn't rule it out completely. Our number one target for midfield this summer should be Ben Sheaf. Not sure he would come here, as Coventry are likely to be there or thereabouts, or a PL club will snap him up. Other than Sheaf, an experienced Championship midfielder can fill the void.

Hope this is the last thread we see on this. Forgetting the fact he is 100% a PL/top flight player, why would he want to stay? What's in it for him?

The point I'm making is more about the fact that if all parties want it to happen, then there is no barriers in place even in the Championship. The fee seems straight forward with Napoli and the fee isn't an issue even in the Championship. The stumbling block itself is whether Cajuste would want to play Championship football.

There have been players with better/similar ability who are playing or have played Championship football. Sheffield United managed to hold on to Sander Berge and Souza in the Championship for example.

I definitely agree that physicality is something we must strengthen this summer. We look like a soft touch compared to other teams. Definitely need more physicality and dark arts.

We’re Morsy, Chaplin, Davis etc League 1 players when they signed for us? No.

It is possible to sell him the vision. Unlikely but possible

He already knows the vision. I don't think we need to worry about him. If he wants to sign, sure we will sign him. If he wants better, then we won't. I think we can get equally as good for a few quid less.

I don't think it's impossible but think it's unlikely - he's great on the ball but a bit asleep off it very often so not sure a PL side will pick him up based on what he has shown as anything more than a rotation option [but then at £10m that's cheap for a PL rotation option!]

I'd certainly take him back, but being a citizen of the world [American Dad, grew up in China, played in Denmark, France and Italy, represents Sweden] it's very likely that he is very happy to move abroad to play so will be a tough deal to do as looks a better fit for other top European leagues without the intensity of the PL

Financially we can do it, and sure we'll try but looks a long shot to me

Apparently we're showing interest in Guingamp's Kalidou Sidibe, who is an absolute man-mountain and would be available for a third of what Cajuste would cost. It may be that we save our biggest outlays for Downes and a genuine competitor for Hirst?

£10m is peanuts for the right player but this won't happen because of wages, personal ambition and it being the season before the world cup.

That's also partly why Delap will go.

The World Cup point is one I hadn't thought about. That's probably a massive factor that will go against us trying to sell it to him.

Downes just feels such a hard deal to do to me. Can't imagine they are going to be willing to sell someone who was one of the best CMs in the Championship 12 months ago to a direct promotion rival for anything other than a silly fee. Especially when they turned down £20m in January.

Brilliant player but not a 46 game season Sat/Tuesday slog of a season player.

Id be looking at Downes/Sheaf type signings. Would be against Travis back if we get one or two other quality midfielders in. He has had a good season at Blackburn.
