How many of our current side would get into a team of our all time greats? Not many I suspect

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Allan Hunter. Better than Butcher or Osman in my opinion and those two were excellent.
And Colin Viljoen. He was better than anyone we have today.
Brian Talbot? Probably not in our all-time top eleven, but better than anyone today.

Richard Wright

Kevin Beattie
Mick Mills
Terry Butcher
George Burley

Franz Thysen
Arnold Muhren
Jon Wark
???
???
Paul Mariner

None...of present squad would get in.

Would prefer Paul Cooper, and add Eric Gates and Clive Woods. If they had the elevated athleticism of todays players from better training and nutrition (and no smoking!) the Town All Time XI would be world class.

Hunter and Osman were very different though. I think those of us who saw them both, if they opted for Osman, maybe did so because of his greater ability on the ball that would suit today's demands well. I agree that Big Al was the better defender though.

Kieron Dyer makes it. That lad on his day before all his Newcastle excesses and injuries was unplayable. Such a joy to watch.

Allan Hunter would only last about 15 minutes in todays games as he would have been booked after 3 minutes and sent off shortly after.
I totally agree though, our best 2 CBs would be Beattie and Hunter for me.

It’s impossible to say isn’t it.

If the greats had the same training and facilities etc then they would dominate the team.

If the current team though played the 81 team in a head to head right now then the current team could potentially thrash them.

But most are in their 70s and a couple are dead. I still think the nine left would do OK.

Criminally underrated across football really. Mainly because of injuries. From 1998 - around 2004 he was outrageously good. Huge part in bringing Champions League football to Newcastle as well.

He's the best we've created since the youth products of the class of 1981. By a mile.

Depends on the question doesn’t it? If it is who would win playing as they were then versus the current team now, I don’t think the 70/80s or even the 2000 team would get a look in. They simply wouldn’t have the athleticism or fitness required.

I’m surprised anyone wouldn’t disagree with that.

But the counter to that would be put them on 70s pitches with 70s tackling and most of the current players wouldn’t leave the dressing room 😉

Also, you are massively under estimating just how good our players from yesteryear were. Butcher, Beattie, Burley, Osman, Berra, Hreioarsson and Mills would have done better than our current back line.
Wark, Holland, Magilton, Thijssen and Muhren would have done better than our current crop in midfield. Mariner, Gates, Brazil, Whymark, Woods, Murphy, Stewart, Bent would have done better than our current front lines.
Our sides from the late 70's/ early 80's had some great players. Our sides in the very early 2000s had some great players. Put a mix together and it would easily survive this season.
I know I am old, but these guys could play.

Of course that lot would win - they have about 20 players, even if they don't have a keeper!

I wonder how many would be needed to beat our current team!

A team of Butcher, Beattie, Hreidarsson, Burley, Wark, Muhren, Thijssen, Mariner would probably just about do it on their own wouldn't they?
