Your worst ITFC take 11:09 - Apr 2 with 4233 viewsLinners

As if often the case when you're losing every week, everyone has their own take on the situation. But what's the worst ITFC take you're willing to admit to?

I'll go first:

I thought Darren Ambrose would get 100 caps for England.

I thought Sam Parkin would be a goal machine.

I also thought Massimo Luongo would be the new Cesc Fabregas when I first saw him.

dont you means I also thought Massimo Luongo would be the new Colin Healy when I first saw him.

I thought Arnold Muhren was a waste of oxygen. Couldn’t tackle, head, shoot, run and was totally one footed, not that he got the ball. Looked like he needed a few juicy steaks to build himself up a bit too. Load of rubbish Robson.

This fine piece of judgement was made after his first home game. A 3-0 thrashing by Liverpool watched from the Portman/Cobbold Stand. No idea why we sat there - my dad must have blagged a couple of tickets.

Poor Arnold spent the game looking open mouthed and lost as the ball sailed over his head. He’ll never do anything for us. Get rid.

That take didn’t age well.

We also thought John Wark was too small, weak and weedy to play at the top level after seeing his debut against Leeds at Filbert St in 75. Ooops.

Well, Muhren might have been a complete waste as a signing if we hadn't later signed Frans Thijssen & started keeping the ball on the deck. When we signed Muhren, I knew he was the younger brother of Gerrie Muhren, who had won 3 European Cups with Ajax & I had no idea how good he was or would become.

Actually, Muhren was already settling in to the English game and the team were adapting to him by the time Frans turned up in Jan/Feb 1979.

Looking at the 78/79 results I notice he scored twice in the end of December 5-1 hammering of Chelsea. I was at the game though don’t remember it. I do remember him playing against Bolton a few weeks earlier in front of a thin crowd of 16,593 in a 3-0 win and thinking what a good player he was.

Looking at the results, we certainly improved as the season went on.

My first thoughts was Jon Hallsworth was going to be better keeper than Cooper

So did I

I have bet numerous people that we would be top 10

Also, like someone else I just read said, I thought we would always be as good as we were in the late 70's and early 80's

To add to these - I remember thinking Trevor Putney would play for England and that Marco Holster would be a Dutch great.....

....Mind you, I also think most seasons we are going to win the league.

Thankfully I don't gamble.

I presume you made the judgement on Holster before you'd eventually seen him play, although fortunately there weren't many opportunities to do that.
Since the Muhren/Thijssen days, I think we've always been hoping for a new Dutch hero to emerge at Town. Gus Uhlenbeek wasn't as good as we wanted him to be & Martijn Reuser punched above the weight of what he actually achieved.

I think Muhren himself felt rather like most of that summary after that debut too!

I did an interview with the BBC, on camera at the friendly v MK Dons, was Hurst's first friendly I think.

"He's a proven winner - this could be our season, I really think this is the year we finally go up!"

Yeah, aged beautifully!

I remember the EADT giving out masks of him. I wore it and the chap next to me asked who it was! He was a neutral and genuinely had no idea who Hurst was.

I thought Gwion Edwards was going to be a player after his flick over an opponent and run to set up a goal/score.

I also thought Woolfenden looked a player in my defence.

Well, I think I saw his debut at a friendly against Southend away - but my memory fades.

I do remember him having untidy hair.

I thought Roy Keane was the messiah & Lee Martin would be hard to for us to keep hold of after ripping up the Championship

That losing Walton before the first game of 23/24 was a disaster, that Hladky was a league two keeper and so we were going to struggle to stay out of the bottom 3 until Walton was back. After 20 minutes against Sunderland away I was even more convinced of it, he looked out of his depth.

And so did Town; remarkable how we adapted to the faster pace of the Championship in one game. Sadly, the PL is another level altogether & I think we could only have had a realistic chance of staying up if we had cheated like Forest - who still only just stayed up. I wouldn't have wanted us to take that size of risk.

Oh god that reminds me after that friendly I thought Ellis Harrison was a great signing.
