I agree but also some form of penance might reasonably be expected. Perhaps slightly more than saying four Hail Marys.
Say losing his position for instance if only to keep him away from temptation and authority over helpless nuns.

I don't know the case, but you would be right.

If it's the case I think you're referring to, he was kicked out of the Jesuit order.

Forgiveness is a chief mantra of the R.C church. Sins are absolved if true repentance is asked for. The crime is of course not forgotten.

Very convenient..

Unless they look to Africa or the USA, which both have some quite hard-line traditionalist/socially conservative leaders.

Less likely to be the latter, with the continued rumblings and aftermath of the child abuse scandal.

maybe they should look outside the church for someone

They could have a competition called Pope Idol.

Simon Cowell and a team of judges with halo buzzers deciding who gets their wings to the next round.

This is when he doesn’t get to find out that there’s no God and his whole career was built on an incorrect theory.

Possibly.

R.I.P.

Some of his supporters will be happy in their belief that the pontiff is now in a better place.
I attended Mrs Radlett's uncle's funeral some years ago. He was a religious man & he passed this on to his children (or brainwashed them, depending on your point of view) & his son seemed genuinely pleased that his dad was now in a better place, which I found rather scary.

Perhaps his Dad was suffering from some horrible illness, which made his demise a blessed release.

As a non-Catholic I didn't feel I could comment with a Father Ted quote, because this isn't an Ecumenical matter.

That will be the Pope who forgave one of his senior priests after he had been found guilty of "molesting" at least 20 nuns.

I hope they choose a better one this time.

Wow he certainly made it into a habit....
