You forgot St Cuthbert. The true patron Saint of England. He’s named after my cat.

Much more appropriate than Edmund whose only claim to fame seems to have been to be shot to bits by the Vikings, let alone George whose was born in Turkey and invented the doner kebab (maybe!).

Gazza? That’d be an upgrade on the selection of idiots the last mob wheeled in.

Anyway, Bobby Robson was a geordie and nobody complained.

He was actually born in Dunbar, 30 miles to the east of Edinburgh. And he grew up near Melrose in modern day Scotland.

Cuthbert (like many Dark Age saints) was notably bad tempered. Beating people up in visions and the like.

Cuthbert's cult was very wide and it became at one time a common first name. Indeed, I had an uncle with the surname Cuthbertson which could have been derived from Mac Cúithbreith ‘son of Cuthbert’ or perhaps on the analogy of other names a shortened form of Mac Gille Cuithbreith ‘son of the servant of (Saint) Cuthbert’.

To be honest, I do feel quite fortunate to have been born English. A stable, developed nation with (by global standards) good quality education, health and social care. Decent climate, reasonable opportunities. A lot of history and culture*. Relatively moderate government. A fair amount of status internationally (including the most widely spoken language).

It may not be perfect, or "the greatest nation on Earth". The English have done many bad things over the centuries**. But it has a lot going for it.

* And sport!

** My country right and wrong. It is dishonest not to admit the failings as well as the good things.

I started in East Ham of all places.

I was going to hit town on a massive bender but I’m going on holiday very early Friday morning and didn’t want to risk getting into a kerfuffle so I’m heading home.

Cuthbert will always be a tabby cat to me.

And a Saint that didn’t rot (allegedly).
