Davis a possible target 15:26 - Apr 23 with 2359 viewsDJR

I know he has got a lot of stick on here (not from me), but the following suggests that he is a possible target along with Delap.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/who-scored-blog/2025/apr/23/relegated-playe

It states that no defender has made more key passes than Davis (54) in the Premier League this season which is some going in a team often on the defensive and with limited possession.

For those who didn't know (and I was one of them), a key pass is the final pass from a player to their teammate who then attempts a shot on goal without scoring.

This is where the stats appear, and interesting to note that he is 10th out of all players in the Premier League and ahead of Trent-Alexander who is on 51.

Just goes to emphasize how focused we have been on the left, and the fact that our right sided players have been ravaged by injury.

What is more telling is that our next 2 on the list are Omari with 23 and Jack Clarke with 21 at 93 and 100.

I think he will be sought after, maybe as a back up - but Premier League sides don’t blink at paying £20m for a squad player.

I do wonder if the fact he takes corners / free kicks boost the stat, but the same could be said for Alexander-Arnold

It’s interesting that he’s had loads of criticism on here with people saying he’s the weak link/crap/must play Townsend, etc. But as the stats show he’s one of the very best in terms of making things happen. That won’t have gone unnoticed by other teams. I think his one-on-one defensive game is lacking (the criticism is largely right in that respect) but at a time when flying fullbacks are valued for their attacking side I reckon there’ll be a bit of interest in him.

If we lose him, I think we have an answer already. A more defensive Townsend with Clarke playing ahead of him as a genuine winger would play into Clarke’s strengths. That’s assuming we can keep those two as well, which is far from certain.

Davis is great as a wing back, but defensively is far weaker. If he goes I won’t lose any sleep as long as Townsend stays ( who can also put in a decent cross btw) as he’s a far more accomplished left back in my humble opinion.

Davis was probably our best player over the two previous seasons. Understandably given the way we ask him to play his limitations defensively have been seen. It was a huge ask for him to do all the offensive work he does for us but to not get exposed getting back defensively. He will have probably learnt more than anyone this season and as a still relatively young defender will know exactly the areas need to improve on.

You can look at this negatively but actually when you think we will have an improved/improving version of Davis over the next few years that's really exciting. He was already very good. If he can make tweaks/improvements to his defending he can be top class.

I think the injuries on the right hand side have really really hurt us. And hurt Leif as well.

The right hand side has became essentially void (Johnson much improved in recent away games). It has left Leif doing so much going forwards and then having to back as well.

I think in a better team those defensive lapses would be masked a lot better so it wouldn't surprise me to see him get some interest.

He was so good last season, our best player along with Sam Morsy. We really need to keep him because he would be absolutely crucial to another promotion push.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

It is very notable how many fans have disliked any left back who has gone on to better things. I think it could almost be levelled at most defenders. They are positions where errors are noticed more than the positives.

Davis is a very good player who will attract Premier League interest. Whether that interest is strong enough to see a bid high enough for us to accept it is another issue.

I see Leif as a vital part of our instant return to the PL. I think he will learn so much from this season and will only improve season on season.
If he does go, then I am confident Conor will be more than able to fill the roll. If our starting X1 for next season was chosen from who he currently have, but without those potentially leaving, I would still be very confident of top 2 next season.

Palmer.
Johnson, Woolfy, Greaves, Townsend.
Morsy, Taylor.
Hutchinson, Szmodics, J. Clarke.
Hirst.

Subs.
Walton, H. Clarke, Luongo, Burns, Ogbene, Broadhead, Chaplin.

We will obviously strengthen in all 3 departments if Axel, Burgess, O'Shea, Davis and Delap leave. CM will need attention, but with what will remain for next season, I think we start in a very, very strong position.

If Davis goes I wonder whether Townsend or Humphreys becomes first choice left back. It will be interesting to see if Humphreys plays for us and, if so, in what position.

I think that's certainly a strong Championship team, but not a standout one. If we couldn't eventually manage to field better than that I think it would be a disappointing return from having dipped our toes into the Premiership moneypot.

For me he should be playing where Jack Clarke is, with a fullback e.g. Townsend behind him. Seems a no brainer. Johnson and Tuanzebe have worked well that way on the other side. Maybe we'd actually have some midfield presence then and not get shat on from a great height in the middle third game after game.

That is without any additions though.

It is an incredibly strong base for that level. Couple new midfielders, new left back, new striker, new Right back on top of that and we will be looking good. 5/6 additions, make use of the loan market as we have previously and that should be ready to go.

I don't think Humph has the legs or physicality as a left back

He did a job as a stop gap but is not a long term sustainable option I'd suggest

I assume Bonniface is seen as the long term successor to Davis, whether anyone comes in in the meantime or we are going for Bonniface and/or Townsend next season, who knows

Davis is important to our attacking game but defensively he isn't great, I wonder if we will consider another option in there

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Do you expect Humphreys to go on another loan or to stay and, if the latter, to play in midfield? I think he needs to get regular game time in the Championship next season.

I have no clue, he is reasonable cover in the middle of the park, has he got stronger, I'd still worry he is a bit lightweight, obviously he is technically good?

I don't know highly he is rated or does our budget mean we are going to secure some ballers who force him out?

I have no idea if we have any interest in someone like Kone or would his relationship with Hunphreys be a benefit, if he is a player we would be after?

Tbf I think it’s rare you see a player playing in the wing back role that is strong both offensively as well as defensively. They tend to be better at one or the other. McKenna went for David becysse it’s fitted his tactic of offensive (focus) play. If Davis stays with us he will undoubtedly be a big threat at championship level again, but if we get promoted back to PL unless his defending attributes improve he will be found wanting again. If you look st his defending toke in the championship he was often caught out of position, but that’s because McKenna wants him to get forward so much. It’s virtually impossible to do both roles 100% effective all the time.
