I know the future of humanity is on the line etc etc 15:29 - Apr 29 with 2886 viewsLinners

...but the White House press conferences/briefings are pure comedy gold. There's no way that political satires would have gone this far - they'd have been accused of being ridiculous.

I think my favourite is the props. They love a prop.

Why does she need to hold up a photo of Bezos? It adds nothing to what she's saying. In fact it's nearly as ridiculous as what she is saying.

This can't really last 4 years can it? The scary thing is that we're usually just a few years down the road from the Yanks when it comes to political trends, I can't wait for Prime Minister Nige!

I wonder whether the fact that the Tories had been in power so long (and essentially collapsed) has protected us a little, but I do fear/expect a shift back right at the next election - just a matter of how far!

i wonder if they are picking fights with people they can't win against.

Without being clued up totally on the politics of it all, picking on a wealthy person who i believe owns a paper that backed Trump, might not be the wisest move.

As i said the above might not be totally correct, but im sure i heard Bezos was benefiting from Trump being in power.

My horrible prediction is that in early 2028 Farage will offer to disband Reform and Join the Tories on the condition that they have an immediate leadership contest with his name on the ballot. He then wins said competition comfortably before leading the Tories to Victory in 2029.

By 2029 Labour will be very unpopular largely down to not being able (or some may say not being willing) to repair the enormous damage done to the country after 14 years of Tory mis-rule.

Hopefully my political predictions are as accurate as my Town score predictions.

What's the feeling over there amongst the non-brainwashed? Is it one of despair? It's all a bit surreal from the outside.

I think a reaction like Canada’s sharp move away from anything resembling the orange oaf is far more likely.

A lot depends if Labour start actually doing stuff, like stop sucking up to Trump and taking steps to move away from an unreliable authoritarian/dictatorship like America, re-arm to keep the Putin’s off and form better trading relationships with reliable partners. Lastly, try and steer clear of the 14 years greedy, corrupt, frankly disgusting behaviour of their predecessors.

Do these basic things and a bit of domestic stuff and they’ll keep the tories out for a generation. Farage? He’s no threat. Five seconds listening to that odious Trump-mini-me and most people with any degree of sanity will run a mile.

Governments lose elections. Opposition doesn’t win them.

It’s always hard to tell because people vote with their wallets and their feelings, but if this tariff stuff kicks in, hopefully folks will wake the fk up and realize there’s a lunatic in charge. Don’t know how much more evidence is needed at this point but here we are.

Well, in my opinion apart from one lady who is a staunch Democrat, I haven't noticed one shred of despair. in fact, the complete opposite and that includes the many resident Brits I'm in contact with. Everyone seems very upbeat with the way things are going.

Starmer needs to stop out-reforming the Reform Party and actually stand for liberalism. Do stuff which he wants rather than what he thinks the Daily Mail wants.

In the words of the late great American writer P J O'Rouke "American land of the free home of the stupid'

He also said

“The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer and remove the crab grass on your lawn.
The Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work and then get elected and prove it.”

Well, you have a first hand view. Certainly an American chum who I met the other month thought him a complete deckhead, but his family back in Chicago think Trump is a messiah. The news reporting is very mixed, but from what I’m reading in general his popularity is waning.

Part of the long term problem he has is the lies. He’s telling them constantly from claiming the partial tariff retreat was a tactic to claiming the fall in egg prices is all down to him. Any inflation he will blame on others and he will continue his witch hunt against anyone he sees as an enemy or offending him, whether justified or imaginary. Lies will only get you so far for so long. He’s in a race against time to destroy his opposition, control media and change the constitution.

The number of executive orders issued by comparison with predecessors is extraordinary. All part of the blitz tactic. I wonder how long his henchmen will last? My guess is that the most clueless like dimwit Hegseth will outstay more dangerous people like oily eyeliner Vance who could pose a threat to him.

His rally last night, looking at the transcript, was the usual claims and rants and included a jolly video of El Salvador prisoners. Classy.

The man is a few slates short of a roof.

It’s Florida though. They’re as mad as a bag of spanner’s down there. It’s basically Clacton with crocodiles.

It’s amazing how many people genuinely believe whatever Trump says. How they manage to seamlessly pivot around his inconsistency is quite impressive.

I'd love to know how many of the people that still support him fit into the broad categories of:-

-Utterly ignorant of what he's said/done or just don't understand(i.e. live in an information vacuum, or Fox News style bubble, and are fully paid up members of the cult)

-Know full well what he's said/done, and like it for various, pretty horrible, reasons (I.e. 'they're not bugs, they're features')

-purely selfish and just want a tax break. No other issues are a factor

Absolutely. The gimmick they announced yesterday about sex offenders being barred from claiming asylum was such an obvious attempt to claw votes from reform in the local elections. It makes them look pathetic and out of touch, and just adds fuel to the narrative that those seeking asylum are largely criminals.

Of course it is, nobody would argue otherwise. My point is that announcing something that no doubt already takes places and is relevant to a miniscule fraction of cases, just to look tough before the local elections is a frankly pathetic way for a serious party to behave. It won't win them any votes, all it does is move mainstream politics closer to the Reform agenda, with the only beneficiaries being Reform.

I really doubt one quote is going to "move mainstream politics closer to the Reform agenda". To suggest it's not a way for a serious party to behave is just ridiculously OTT IMO. We have a lot of right wing people in this country, unfortunately. It makes perfect sense to throw them some crumbs occassionally. By not addressing their concerns is how Reform gets in, actually.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
