Horticulturistas - recommed me a tree/bush that will last but won't get too big 10:59 - May 1 with 1646 views | The_Flashing_Smile | As a family we've been struggling to know what to do with Dad's ashes. Mum doesn't want them in the house, jewelery with them in seems a bit weird, and he didn't really have a 'special place' where we could scatter them. Other than his vegetable patch, but then my mum is 80... she won't live there forever. So we're thinking of mixing the ashes into the soil of some kind of tree/bush that can be in a large pot, but won't get too big that it'll need planting in the ground, so we can move it easily when the time comes. Any ideas?

Has anyone other than Mr Miyagi ever successfully kept a bonsai tree alive for more than a couple of months?

I was thinking something a little bigger than that! Don't know how much there is in the way of ashes but if it's anything like in the movies they'll swamp a bonsai tree!

I've one in a large pot that is about 20 years old. You'll have to use Ericaceous compost, And make sure it is blocked from the rising sun, but its a wonderful plant.

Couple of things to think about... Are you thinking of a pot or in the garden?( edit, didn't read thie OP properly - pot is fine, but bear in mind the below) Obvious benefits of a pot menas it can move if you move. Downside, is that you will have to be a bit more careful of it, as pots need to be maintained to ensure they don't dry out. I've succesfully kept a couple of camellias alive in pots, but I live in Manchester where we are less likely to suffer drought conditions and have to water regularly. We have just planted an Acer ( japanese maple), in our garden as a remembrance of my father in law. Slow growing, and not too big, but looks lovely, so that would be another option. - but you could also do it in a pot. YOU also might find azaleas better than camellias as they don't tend to grow as big.... [Post edited 1 May 12:10]

Would echo the Japanese Acer. Can get dwarf varieties. They look spectacular especially in the autumn

No. To TFS: I like the idea of an ornamental fruit tree. Camellia would work too as they’re very hard (hard to kill but harder to get just right). In a sheltered spot, I would also consider an Acer. They lose their leaves but give wonderful colour from spring to autumn and some have interesting bark for the winter. Probably more importantly, what did your dad like? Make it personal if you can as it’ll mean a lot more to you.

He liked veg mostly. I made a DAD sign to go along one side of the coffin out of brussells sprouts! Anyway, thanks all. I put the suggestions to my mum and she LOVES Japanese Maple (she keeps seeing them in people's gardens). Just got to run it past my brother now!

Make sure it’s a big pot and the ashes are well mixed in the soil. I’m afraid there can be contaminants in ashes that can be harmful to tree roots. I have experienced trees dying where well meaning relatives planted a memorial tree but the ashes involved lead to the tree dying. Hole dug, ashes spread and emptied all around and coating the roots, tree planted and then sadly the trees died within a year.

Miss Slave agrees with rose and acer but also suggests prunus kojo-no-mai into the mix. Or nandina....

How about a beautiful Hydrangea in a big pot? Or you could have as many pots as you want, that way you can move the pots with you if you move etc. Hydrangeas are beautiful plants and you can keep them down to a sensible size. They also have beautiful flowers. [Post edited 2 May 4:53]

I think you missed the bits about wanting it to last (like a tree) an be transportable (we can't really take the veg patch with us when the house is eventually sold!)

Box can suffer from a range of problems, including box blight and box tree caterpillar, which have become particularly prevalent in recent years in many parts of the UK. Both can seriously damage and disfigure box plants. In our garden, we've lost three well established box plants in the last two or three years to one of those diseases (I can't figure out which). Indeed they look awful if they get attacked. But they can bounce back if you are lucky. I have seen some do just that.

The problem in my case was that I didn't know there was an issue, and left it too late. As it is, the man opposite my mother's spent a great deal of time last year picking out the caterpillars on his low level box hedge which seems to have been effective.
