No mention of a position on trans men though. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cz01z4rdx4no Hmm, Football or General? [Post edited 1 May 11:30]

The FA have banned trans women from women’s football on 12:35 - May 1 by Herbivore | You don't really understand or care about trans issues, we get it, but is there really a need to be such a bell about it? |
which bit of what i said do you actually disagree with? our mind / soul / self / mental processing is inseparable from our bodies - we are all held within our bodies. you can say we're trapped there or call it something else, but our biology is real and completely inescapable. that's true for everyone - it can't wished away. i care about trans people not being harassed or discriminated against and being valued and respected. why are you so quick to get abusive when someone disagrees with you?

The FA have banned trans women from women’s football on 13:07 - May 1 by Swailsey | Pretty poor this. |
why exactly? the reason there isn't an issue over trans men competing in men's sport is that in physical sports trans men are at a disadvantage. the reason that there is a problem with trans women competing in women's sports is that in physical sports trans women are at an unfair advantage. which bit if that do you disagree with?

The FA have banned trans women from women’s football on 13:23 - May 1 by _clive_baker_ | I doubt it given only 28 transgender women are currently registered / playing football at any adult level in England. |
And none of them are professional. So an intervention to solve a problem that doesn't really exist, to segregate people out of amateur sport. Women's football has always been an LGBT+ friendly space too , so I have my doubts there's some overwhelming demand for this exclusion either. Basically the FA building another brick in the wall for the ongoing segregation of trans people to placate the Daily Mail. [Post edited 1 May 15:35]

Certainly feels like solutionising a problem that doesn't really exist right now. In reality we're talking about 28 individuals dotted around England who are likely hacking around at an amateur level of women's football and having a bit of fun with friends. Perhaps the logic is getting getting ahead of the curve with a ruling before it potentially did become a bigger issue with someone playing in the professional sphere or higher echelons, but you would think that could've been dealt with it on a case by case basis rather than closing the entire shop.

The problem with sport is that it is a zero sum game, and at what point does something become a rule? At what level can you get to before it is a problem, and why then is one side of the line ok, and the other side not ok? This is the simple and fair solution, but there will be individual cases where it just feels very unfair - sadly with sport we know that the will to bend and break the rules in the pursuit of winning exists at all levels.....so all of these things are not a problem until they are a problem; and then they are a massive problem and impossible to deal with

A lot of them will be playing for teams explicitly founded as LGBT+ friendly spaces too and again, it's a decision that essentially amounts to booting those clubs out of mainstream amateur sport. It's well beyond anything proportionate. What they're getting ahead of is getting yelled at by the extremely well-resourced transphobe lobby (rather than the prospect of any trans women becoming elite footballers, which is statistically pretty unlikely and something you could deal with down the line or just by having the ban not apply to non-elite football) [Post edited 1 May 16:11]

The issue for the fa is that under the equality act there isn’t now a defence for segregating other than on the basis of biological sex. If other biological males wanted to have a bit of fun with their friends how could a different rule legally apply to them? [Post edited 1 May 16:50]

I do find it kind of weird that this is such an issue when, as you say, there are so few trans people involved in the first place. But even more so in a sport where it'd be perfectly acceptable for Adebayo Akinfenwa to come up against Nathan Dyer and there'd be almost exactly a 100lb weight difference between them.

and where, mixed gender football at amateur level exists! It's not an unsafe sport for men to play with women. Also, beyond expelling a bunch of LGBT+ friendly football teams from ordinary competitions, it's main effect is going to be vigilante policing. More idiots like that dad who was charged recently for yelling abuse at a 12-year girl who tackled his daughter.

Yep, exactly that. Feels like a decision has been made when it really didn't need to be. It's not like we're seeing huge teams of trans men dominating the women's professional leagues and throwing everything off kilter, or women getting injured by huge blokes dressed as women. It's a tiny handful of trans people playing the game for fun.

I appreciate its a very complex issue, its just regrettable that 28 people won't be able to participate in their hobby from June. I appreciate football is important at all levels to those involved, but the question really must be is the upside potential greater than the downside risk. Is the problem being solved bigger than the consequence of solving it? As it stands right now the sentiment of such legislation and societal implications etc seems to me to outweigh the actual underlying problem, that must in reality be small to non existent in women's football given there are no trans professionals and about 1 amateur player per every 2 counties in the country.

That's true, the 65+ teams of old crocks at my walking football club are mixed (albeit only about 20% women) with no quarter given, which I like. Coach picks sides with a balance of skill & strength to try & create an evenly matched game. Maybe just not poss in practical terms le for the needs & wishes of every single grouping, am & pro, minority or large, to be met? Or a genius is needed to work out something everyone's happy with. Today's players are mostly really lucky though. When I was growing up in the 1950s & 60s, there was zero opportunity for women to play football :(

On your last paragraph, one of the tragedies of all this is that it's largely been women who grew up with those lack of opportunities to do things like play football who have lobbied so hard for trans women to now be denied those same opportunities.

Whilst I see your point of view, the fact is, why should women who have battled decades of bans and discrimination then be forced to open the doors to trans women who have gone through puberty as biological males and gain an unfair advantage over those women who have a right to play their sport? 28 people are affected by this ruling. Countless hundreds and thousands of women are protected by this ruling. Nothing in life is perfectly fair, but I can't disagree with the FA here.

There aren’t enough to set up their own league. I’ve seen figures bandied around between 20 and 28 for the number of registered trans players in England. All are amateur, none professional (I don’t know how that splits between trans women and trans men). So we’re talking about a tiny number of people at grass roots level. We’re certainly not talking about a load of men forcing women to give up women’s football.

You don't think trans men, who are now considered to be women, who have been undergoing a transition that involves taking testosterone would have a physical advantage over cis women? The supreme court ruling opens the door for trans men to potentially participate in women only sports and to access women only spaces.
