for all the people who suggest we shouldn't criticise reform or their voters on 20:55 - May 2 by Swansea_Blue | Yeah, he’s not a good speaker in the traditional sense. His strength is triggering people so they react and then he can claim the moral victory. He’s very good at that. It’s not a nice trait, but it’s effective. His motivation fascinates me. I assume he’s deeply damaged. I had the chance to spend some time with his people in Brussels back when he was only an irrelevant MEP (always absent btw, he was never at any sessions I viewed). Their whole energy was devoted to getting one over on their political rivals. There was never a mention of helping constituents. Farage was very much the outsider and ridiculed by his peers. None of them took him seriously and I suspect that wasn’t the first time he’d faced that sort of rejection. I don’t know what his original background is, but being a misfit seems to have shaped all he’s doing now. He’s probably a psychologist’s wet dream. |
He’s certainly caused a few fanboys on here to moisten their mattress covers in excitement overnight. Had a quick crawl through the Benters thread, but couldn’t find one of them willing to pop their heads up and explain what, apart from blaming their pitiful existences on people with different coloured skin, has actually given them a little boost on their trip to Wetherspoons today. It’s going to have to play itself out to its inevitable conclusion now, much like it did with the same half wits who briefly suckled at the teat of Boris because he really understood them and said things they thought he meant…

for all the people who suggest we shouldn't criticise reform or their voters on 20:14 - May 2 by Radlett_blue | I think you'll find that a lot of the Reform voters are working class people who are dismayed how much of their taxes are going to pay for people on benefits. The small boat immigration issue is not as important as they feel, but many Reform voters feel conventional politicians have let them down by failing to tackle this issue & that Farage has the answers. |
Their taxes are being used to pay for boomer generation pensioners. And without immigration the taxes required to service our increasingly aged population (especially as cigarette taxes decrease/increase life expectancy) will increase still further. Simple sound bite solution and blame game politics solve none of this, and Reform (and the 2 main parties) need constantly calling out on this
for all the people who suggest we shouldn't criticise reform or their voters on 21:21 - May 2 with 483 views | thebooks | Why on earth wouldn’t you critcise them? They’re a bunch of fascists and racists. I understand why Reform are doing well. This is a very broken country and the traditional parties offer nothing. As for people who vote for them… well, question why they vote for racists. Point out how incoherent and untrustworthy Reform are. Point out that immigrants are not your enemy. Just don’t try and meet them half way.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. Rightly or wrongly a political class has been created that has no experience of what actually occurs in the world of business/working life, all of which is broadly supported by an old school boys networks of journalists. Reform are only getting publicity thanks to that network whereas the Greens, who have been successful for far longer, get no coverage at all.

That doesn’t appear to be true, although it’s a view that’s cropped up loads today. When you look at polls it seems that most reform voters are from higher social classes. Basically, they’re former Tory voters. Obviously there are caveats as this relates to the GE and not today, but based on the largest poll after the last election Reform voters “tend to be middle-aged or elderly, with a slight bias towards men, live outside London and Scotland, were overwhelmingly supportive of the Conservative Party at the last general election (in 2019) and were very likely to have voted to leave the European Union at the national referendum in 2016”. https://www.prosperity.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/WHOS-VOTING-REFORM-25.03.2 I’ve deliberately chosen that link as it’s from a report authored by Matt Goodwin, who’s very much in the right wing camp. There’s no tribal bias in that assessment.

for all the people who suggest we shouldn't criticise reform or their voters on 07:32 - May 3 with 301 views | bsw72 | Personally this whole “promise” crap in politics is ridiculous and is weaponised by all parties. How can you run a country based on promises made weeks, months or even years in the past in a modern world where things change unpredictably and can completely undermine your plans. Outline plans, detail dependencies for those plans, highlight when dependencies change and how that impacts the plans and what is changing. It’s how the better companies function. Promises are made by kids in playgrounds.

for all the people who suggest we shouldn't criticise reform or their voters on 20:37 - May 2 by Nthsuffolkblue | This is the remarkable game they play. They set up the problem to win popularity without any intention of dealing with it because it is a vote winner. It has begun to backfire a bit on the Conservatives as they are being seen to have failed to deal with it so a more extreme "solution" is needed. The rhetoric of the "problem" perpetuated by much of the media is plain nasty. |
Yes, if Reform actually formed a government I reckon it would be as inept as Trump. But while in opposition, this really doesn't matter as clever soundbites carry sway in the polls. It's when a party is in government that it gets real scrutiny - as Labour is finding out now - although IMO Starmer is doing a good job.

New exploration licenses will be issued in the North Sea. For context, I work in the oil and gas industry, so it would be a huge boost to North Sea oil and those within the industry.

So you think there are sufficient reserves of gas waiting to be found that we could reduce our debt by extracting it? You don't think there is any future in biogas and other alternative fuels instead? You don't think it much more likely that the middle east, US, Russia and even Greenland will plug the gap instead?
