Sounds like you should be angry at developers rather than immigrants, mate.
Sounds rather like Benters objects to new building on principle. Irony being the new developments in Bentley haven't remotely impacted the lovely centre/green what with them being on the outskirts of the village.
And the pub is very quiet 90% of the time so the new homes may well help it survive when many others are closing.
But NIMBYs are going NIMBY - nothing new there I guess.
I hope Reform do well. In the same way that I hope Labour do well and all the other parties. I want successful leaders. Because their positive achievements benefit us all.
I'd challenge anyone to find one positive thing Farage has ever said, let alone achieved. He only ever talks everything and everyone down.
People should only be allowed to object to a planning application for new housing if they fulfill both of these requirements

Nimby ism is not a new trait.... I was reading a document from the Middle Ages where one of the characters said " Pull up the drawbrige Johann for I am safely accross the moat "
I’m glad that the planning reforms are going to reduce the power of local councils. For too long there has been no incentive to build anything because locals homeowners object to protect their house prices and local councillors often cave in to their demands to boost their re-election chances. Meanwhile, millions of struggling young people didn’t have a voice.
I’m not sure how workable it would be but if I was running the country I’d have implemented a policy whereby the locals who sign objections to housing proposals in their area have to pay extra council tax to make up for the lost revenue. That would have reduced the number of objections.

That’s not exactly true I’m afraid.
But then if you visited once on your fizzy on a Wednesday night I guess you know best 😂👍.
It was rammed last Wednesday with leather clad people, last night was a bit quieter, bit of sun makes the world of difference.

Farage is a fraud and a charlatan, a thin-skinned megalomaniac who has somehow managed to convince a vast swathe of voters that he has their interests at heart
Are you not angry at the Tories for destroying public services and wrecking the economy though? These things have a much bigger impact on our daily lives than new housing estates and immigration do. It's not developers or immigrants who mean you have to wait 3 weeks for a routine GP appointment or to wait years for non-emergency surgery. It's not developers or immigrants who have seen growth flatline and inflation going up. Global factors contributed to some of that but a lot of it was down to the Tories totally fecking things up for 14 years. Doesn't any of that bother you or is it only really immigration and new housing that you're concerned about?

It's so bizarre. Farage's entire raison d'etre for his whole career was Brexit. It was literally the only thing he was known for and his sole interest (The Brexit Party FFS). He has gladly accepted the accolades as the person who made it happen.
Now that's been proven beyond any doubt to be a total disaster for the country, and for everyone who lives here, and is a hugely unpopular project with most of the population.
Yet he just carries on regardless, more influential than ever and avoiding any accountability for literally anything and everything that he's ever said or done. Fishermen have been screwed, farmers have been screwed, the working classes have been screwed, and yet he still prances around with them playing his 'man of the people' act.
I know we live in a country where the media is dominated by right wing billionaires but it still blows my mind how many people are taken in by him.

Yeah but that's because Brexit hasn't been implemented correctly. Had Farage been in charge things would have worked out much better (no specifics required, just telling it like it is).

You don't seem to understand the forces that have brought the likes of Trump, Farage & various European right wingers to the forefront. For a variety of reasons, the lifestyles of many ordinary citizens in the USA & Europe have slowly become worse over the last 20 years. Some of these are near inescapable, like demographics & globalisation. Conventional politicians have bleated away, but been afraid of taking tough, unpopular decisions. So populists like Trump & Farage, who don't have the baggage of failed conventional parties, gather support with their soundbites, with a particular focus on immigration. I very much doubt they have answers, but many of the people feel they have little to lose by rolling the dice.

Farage might have been the figurehead, but the right wing press played in my view a bigger part in setting the narrative for Brexit.
One aspect of Brexit that was made out to be essential was free trade deals. I always thought their impact was fairly limited, but it is interesting to note that, rather than trumpeting it, the response of the right wing press to this week's trade deal with India was to focus on and condemn tax aspects, supposedly favouring Indian workers, which are a standard part of such deals.

Yeah, I think that's fair.
Of course I understand the wider socio-economic situation that allows populist charlatans to thrive, I just don't like it. Particularly when, as in the case of Farage, he's demonstrated beyond all doubt that his 'answers' just make everything worse for (almost) everyone.

It's quite easy being a successful populist when not in power. I'm sure Trump's tariffs will make the US economy worse, but Trump will obviously deny that & theoretically he can't run for President again. Reform's economic policies are a complete, unsupportable mess & while they will get greater scrutiny before the next General Election, this may not prevent them from annihilating a lost Conservative Party.
That does happen in the vast majority of cases anyway and it still doesn’t stop people objecting for often spurious reasons.
It’s good that the planning laws have been reformed to make it easier to build.
Think it also depends on where and why we are building in any given area. If the village of Bentley is ramned full of young families looking for housing then by all means build away. People need housing.
Though if it's just a case of a developer seeing an opportunity to make money from developing the edge of a picturesque village. Then I'm not so sure our interests wouldn't be better served by forcing these developments into already well developed urban areas. Say for North Essex, possibly Harlow and Haverhill ( I know Haverhills in Suffolk, but only by a few hundred meters).
Therefore spareing some of these villages this kinda development. There's only so many of these semi untouched villages left in Suffolk and Essex and at some point in the very near future we may well need to see them as part of or our own unique historical/archaeological/cultural heritage and make a serious effort to preserve some of them for future generations.
I remember a time sitting outside my local in the summer months and you would hardly see a car,now it’s so busy.
We have lost so many beautiful fields to housing it’s such a shame.
But hasn't it been ever this benters? That pub you mention (that sounds idyllic by the way) was most likely built on farm land or similar many years ago. Even your house was presumably built on rural land, albeit probably many years ago. I live in a large village. It was mentioned in the Domesday book when it wasn't much more than a hamlet or group of small holdings on land owned by a Duke or similar. I remember a conversation several years ago now. Someone from the road I live in was not happy with a proposed development on land for reasons similar to yours, when another more elderly villager said that she felt the same when the house we live in were built on disused orchard land. It just keeps going around benters and we can't hold back progress. The reality is that we need 000s of new houses. Where will our children live without this progress? Of more concern for me is the impact of housing developments on the local water and sewerage infrastructure, which isn't fit for purpose. We've veered way off topic as usual, so I guess I ought to say that I'm at a loss to understand how anything reform say or propose will actually bring much if anything of real benefit the country.
From Richard Tice last night on QT when asked about reform's position on net zero. Firstly he persistently referred to "net stupid zero" (grown up politics?) and later went on to offer the following incisive policy regarding carbon capture - "plant more trees". This on top of his previous statement that we should just get used to living in a warmer environment. We're in safe hands.

It's telling how far BBC standards have fallen that Tice is able to use it as a platform to broadcast lies and distortions on a daily basis pretty much unchallenged. My question is why? I honestly don't know.

Previoisly I would have agreed with this regarding reform, but there is no escaping they have become a sizeable populist party. In that respect I would expect to see them feature more. For me this added scutiny is an important way for us to really hear what they are about. From last night's QT I would say not very much but they say it loudly. Tice persistently interrupted and in my mind certainly got more air time than the LD rep. I would like to see their feet held to the fire a little more. Despite it's faults I remain an avid advocate for the BBC but they do sometimes infuriate me with the lack of challenge they sometimes give their guests. I'm still astonished at the Douglas Murray interview on Newsnight recently. He was allowed a 5+ minute slot to talk absolute garbage without any serious challenge.

I'm less angry about the volume of exposure they receive than the fact that their lies so often go unchallenged, and as a result fool the public in to thinking that said lies have any scientific credibility.
That Douglas Murray interview was Fox News-esque, utterly terrible journalism.

just rewatched that on youtube. i think you're being unfair to newsnight. they gave him the rope, he hanged himself with it, and they then had 5 minutes with 3 commentators ripping the body apart. no one could watch the section and think the views he expressed came out of well - even regardless of the fact that he himself comes across as pretty odious.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
As has been said several times, they're a bunch of time and money wasting hypocrites. This little escapade is expected to cost the public purse £25k and will be far from the last

I know your response wasn't to me but I thought I'd nip in. I generally like Newsnight but do find it loses it's teeth a little when Victoria isn't presenting. I agree with your points about the interview being pulled apart but I would have liked to have seen that happen during the interview rather than after when Murray wasn't even in the studio to be challenged.
