Ooo, look at me I can speak a pointless language. Grow up
Is Latin really a pointless language? It must form the basic building blocks for so many languages that has evolved from it. A dead language yes, but probably not pointless.

Why do they choose a different name? It should be Pope Bob.
From one of the clips that the BBC were using to kill time this afternoon, it stems from an early Pope with the given name 'Peter', who felt it improper to go on to be Pope Peter, and take the name of St Peter.
Edit - this was actually the second instance. The first was in 533CE when Mercurius changed his name to John II, as he felt his given name was too similar to that of the Roman god Mercury.

Steady on, that’s one of my pitiful haul of 1980s O’ levels, back when spelling & grammar actually mattered and your own school teachers couldn’t influence your grade.

That may not have been an entirely serious post
Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

One of my (many) regrets school wise was dropping Latin .. classics as it was known.. after 1 year with my main argument being that it was a dead language.. years later I realise how handy it is and would have been very helpful with my French Spanish and Italian let alone English.
The previous pope was the first American and not only is the papa peruano so is el papa ;-)

I don't think it's too much to ask that the UK's (and one of the world's) leading broadcaster, ahead of an announcement that it is known will be made in Latin, has someone in the room who can actually understand what's going on.
You want the BBC current affairs lot to know what’s going on? Are you new around here?

Really glad to hear Vance chat about 'catholics and other Christians' wishing the Pope well. There's too much difference between the various branches of Christianity, so even though it's come from that tooser, good stuff.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
lol. “WOKE MARXIST POPE”. I’d be worried if he wasn’t woke. It’s a little bit central to their religion .
These people are utter feckwits. If the penny won’t drop here it never will. I thought that post would be from some sad fringe loon, but no, it was from “Laura Loomer — a far-right 9/11 conspiracy theorist who is close enough to Trump to advise him on national security staffing decisions”.
