Commentators you’ve liked and never really liked? 15:45 - May 11 with 2368 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Ian Darke 10/10! Used to love him back in his Sky days with football and boxing and now does all the major England tournaments for US broadcasters. This year the PL production feed has often given the global audience the joys of Tony Jones who I think is an old school Anglia reporter and pretty sure he’s Norwich based? To be fair seems to keep it fairly unbiased. It’s funny because he’s on a lot of those ITFC retro clips as well. John Champion and Clive Tyldseley (sp) I’ve never really liked that much for some reason. Martin Tyler still gets some PL world feed production stuff and with the loss of some HOF commentators over the recent years must be one of the longest serving now? I was wondering if Barry Davis was still alive and then the crowd panned to him at our game against Palace! [Post edited 11 May 15:47]

Commentators you’ve liked and never really liked? on 17:23 - May 11 by gainsboroughblue | Barry Davies and John Motson were the big players back in the day. I always felt Davies had a bit of resentment for Motson's perceived status as number one. In saying that, Davies had more range with other sports, whereas Motty was pure football. |
Motty was not ‘pure football’ and proved it annually for a while with his live radio commentaries from the Wimbledon championship. [Post edited 11 May 20:14]

Commentators you’ve liked and never really liked? on 18:32 - May 11 by Kieran_Knows | Peter Drury was fine when he used to appear on some random channel with some top level commentary (think Roma comeback against Barcelona a few years ago). Now you hear him every week on Sky Sports trying so hard when a goal is scored that it’s beyond boring and embarrassing now. |
Totally agree...he’s awful. When a player shoots or has a chance, he just shouts their name e.g. “It’s Mohammed Salah!!”, Must do it 20 times a game. Infuriating. Sky need to offer stadium noise only option like Amazon do for when this plank is commentating. Barry Davies is best football commentator ever. Peter Alliss, Bill McLaren and Richie Benaud are best ever in other sports.

Commentators you’ve liked and never really liked? on 15:49 - May 11 by You_Bloo_Right | Barry Davis, for me one of if not the greatest sports commentators of all time, is very much alive. |
Not only one of the greatest, but possibly the only British football commentator to have had a top ten single in 1981 dedicated to his wonderful eyes.

| Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness. |

Not helped by the addition of a third person on commentary much of the time. The best commentary team in sports is Jim Nantz and Tony Romo. Not even close.

For clarity, do you enjoy her from The Odeon, or is The Odeon the location of the Championships and her position whilst commentating? I hope you don't mind me asking, particularly the bit about her position.

Commentators you’ve liked and never really liked? on 10:53 - May 12 with 325 views | BlueMoon | Motson and Davies were football for me growing up. Of the current lot it's more a case of who don't I like. Take any from Carragher, McManaman, Goodman, Richards. I do like Ally McCoist. Impartial and often with some valuable insights which is a rarity. Dare I say it I even have softened with my view of Royston. He's got a bit of comedy in there - time is obviously a great healer.

Richie Benaud was brilliant as well. The calibre of commentators of the past, well and truly spoiled us!

Ah, yes, clarity is certainly needed. The aforementioned tournament takes place at The Odeon, and she commentates on-site. The co-commentator is Ken Kitson.

Benaud certainly was brilliant. Ahh, lazy summer days turning on the tv for the Test Match. His commentary on Botham’s / Willis’ Headingly miracle was something else. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I liked Murray Walker too. His enthusiasm was off the scale. For anyone interested, his book is well worth a read too.

The bloke whose voice sounded just like one off the lightweight, high-revving, internal combustion engines upon which he was commentating, but who was fitted with a distributor from a 1960s Lada, and who consequently misfired comically at crucial moments of commentary. Lovely to listen to though, even if you dislike motor sports.
