FA Cup Final Day 07:18 - May 17 with 875 viewsquirkie

Used to be such a special day many years ago no matter who was in it, get up about this time to start watching the build up.

Nowadays it such a damp squip, sandwiched between Premier League matches.

Missus wants to go to Ikea so off there instead of watching it live this afternoon, may catch highlights this evening.

Poll: How long will we be in League One/League Two from next season?

FA Cup Final Day ….. maybe.. it’s all about the Eurovision for me today.

Poll: Is it an issue for you that the new England manager is foreign ?

It was exciting. Cup Final it’s a knockout, camera on the bus, stuff on from 9am. Shame from the age of eleven I had Saturday morning school, but even then there would be excitement in the air, score predictions on the blackboard etc. Best football day of the year.

I always wanted to see my club in the FA Cup Final. It was THE trophy to win. More than the league because you got all the glory. One day in 1978 we got to do it. It was everything I hoped and more. The only disappointment was of course missing all the stuff throughout the day on tv. No video recording then!

It’s all gone now. Destroyed. I’d love to see us go there again and win of course, but it’s not the same. Not even a fraction of what it once was, sadly.

I remember the excitement of the FA Cup final, and find it sad that it has allowed to decline into what it is today. Clubs chase the money of the Premier League and Champions' League, and the FA Cup income is peanuts in comparison. Teams often play their reserves in the earlier rounds. Replays have been scrapped, costing small teams a lot of money. The semi-finals are at Wembley, making the final less special. The final used to be the last game of the season, but there are still two Premier League games to go. Man City in the final yet again. I expect I will watch it, but feel no excitement to do so. Back in the day I would have watched the build up and looked forward to it.

Back in the day there were very few televised games so the FA Cup Final was special because of that. Now there is so much coverage it has become an also ran. Perhaps this season when there has been very little in the way of competition for places at either end of the PL I would have seen a bit more of expectation about the Final. Hopefully will get to see it from my holiday sun lounger in Halkidiki, but if I can't....oh well.

I know what you're saying about the Cup Final in general, but if our club made it to one, I'd suggest that we fans would see it as just as special as 1978. Honestly, it would be incredible.

Pretty much nail on the head with the TV coverage , there was next to no live footy matches on tv until the mid 80’s I believe except the FA cup final .. no league, or cups .. semis too..wasn’t our uefa cup final highlights too ?

I only found out the cup final was today when it was mentioned on the news earlier.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

And therein lies the problem.
Football saturation point was reached a few years ago.
The only way is down thank goodness. Quality over quantity. A few games each week, and the Final at the end of the season again.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I used to go to Barbara Knox's to watch the whole build up to the game, and the game itself. We'd have bacon sandwiches with Malcolm Hebden and Eileen Derbyshire, followed by a quiz with Robert Lindsay and Sheila Fern. Great times.

I'm looking forward to it as it's Crystal Palace. The prospect of a club winning a major trophy for the first time is exciting as it is so special for those fans. And, sorry Newcastle, but the Carabao Cup does not count as a major trophy in my opinion (even Norwich have won it). But the FA Cup absolutely is a major trophy.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

The phrase I've hear quite a bit this week....

'Oh, is it the FA Cup final this weekend?'

Never used to be in question, everyone knew.

That’s not going to happen - I can see the 15:00 Saturday ko blackout being lifted enabling people to watch their team.
