Following on from presser and 'fine margins', how many (more or less) points would you make an objective case for over the season? Based on performance on the day rather than 'sliding doors' "if we'd won that, then..."
Leicester (h) the clear and obvious +2 Draws with Brentford (h)&(a), Forest (a), Bournemouth (h) and Palace (a); +5, point off for blue-eyed bias +4 Probably got away with one at Villa (a) and Brighton (a) -2
Overall +4 (Pointless I know but...)

We’ve got the points we deserve. We can gloss it up however much we like, but let’s be honest it’s not been great at times and we are where we deserve to be. Fine margins are all well and good, but when it has been in the heat of battle - when it really matters - we’ve come out second best a lot this season. It’s been painful viewing.
The Fulham away fixture feels like a real ‘sliding doors’ moment in my mind.
Jack Clarke puts that effort in the bottom corner rather than against the foot of the post we get back to back wins and (from memory) move up to 16th. Instead we concede late penalty and draw.
Pretty sure we had a pretty awful run of results immediately after that. Felt like we could have built some momentum

Agree- far too many of them went against us at the key moment for it to be misfortune, but almost every time we got an opportunity handed to us, we didnt take advantage of it either.
Man United gave us two really soft goals, played half the game with a man short and we contrived to give them 3 set piece goals to win it, when that was pretty much the one area of our game that was actually strong.
We played a really poor Spurs side, had 3 really good chances in the first 10 mins, missed all of them, dominated the second half and yet lost 4-1.
We played one of the worst teams the PL has ever seen and managed to put in two of our poorest performances and take just one point.

Why do we assume we're the only club who've lost out on points through sliding doors moments or whatever? Every club has 'what if' memories. We are where we are for a good reason.

Um..... OK.... yes..... but you're completely ignoring every other club's near misses/ misfortunes and just focusing solely on our isolated pieces of bad luck. I also never hear of our good fortunes..... like Morsy's last minute deflected equaliser against Saints. Sample size of 36 games and I reckon we're deservedly where we are.

The table doesn’t lie and neither does the points total. We’ve dominated 70 mins of one game this season and competed at times in some of the others. But most of the time we’ve not been good enough playing, players, coaching or as a club in general. It was impossible for us to be prepared as we needed to be and so it proved.
I hope and believe that if the owners are still willing and able to support the growth of the club and we get back, we will do better next time.
On the positive side, the club has conducted itself well and all have done their best. The support in the ground, and from what I’ve seen and heard, away has been excellent, even if some armchair warriors on social media could do with having a word with themselves.
There’s a ton of things to learn and improve on from this season and hopefully the club will. Overall, for me the season has been interesting, sobering and disappointing.
We have the points we deserve, no more no less. We take the hit and come back competing better next time.

Tis is so true.we made so many mistakes, but that is why we will learn and achieve our goals.

It’s crazy to think though, that if we had held onto at least half of the points we’ve dropped from winning positions, there would still be a chance that we would stay up at the expense of either Tottenham or Manchester United.

The stats in the last TWTV thingy were pretty damming. Bottom 3 in just about every metric where we need to be at the top and top 3 of the ones where we need to be at the bottom.
so sure, we had some hard luck stories, but over the season we've not been good enough. Really disapppointing, but the prem was better than we (and i think even KM) expected. We all halied KM as a genius and expected to get points because of his tactical nous. It hasnt turned out that way - even RVN has done as well as him. (And this is no criticism, just being realistic).

Even if Jack Clarke misses that chance & Fulham get a goal kick we probably would have held for the win.

At last someone I agree with. That turned out whole season, Even if Clarke had put it in the stand we would have won,

… we’ve actually done better in terms of current points than our set-up and approach deserves!
Adam gives a full review of the season stats in comparison to other Premier teams - see his analysis in last segment of thisweek’s Video Verdict (see below link from 33:30)).
We’re 9th overall for chance conversion, and 10th for outperforming our XG - rare high rankings, as we sit 16-20th for many metrics. Perhaps suggesting we should have scored less than our attacking play deserved.
We’ve also done well at defending blocks, blocked shots, aerials - perhaps meaning heroics have kept us in some games.
We’ve simply not done enough with the ball going forward - we may have been good at taking chances, but we just haven’t done enough to get into the final third to create enough of them. 20th for progressive passing (into final third) and 20th for dribbling in final third.
Combine that with 5th in the table for errors and 4th for penalties conceded (rankings you want to be low in!) it’s not hard to see why we’re 18th, perhaps 19th come the final table.
Another 6 points against Southampton and Bournemouth at home if we had Palmer in goal instead of Muric and at least 1 against Everton at home if the officials were competent.
