Things that are good about living in the UK 15:45 - May 21 with 5579 viewsThisIsMyUsername

Everything seems to be rather doom and gloom at the moment. I am trying myself to become more mindful about all of the good that the UK has to offer, and to recognise how lucky one is to live here. Of course it isn't perfect, but nowhere is.

Let's make a list of the good things about living in the UK. I'll make a start:

- Healthcare which is free at the point of access.
- Access to plentiful and immediate food and water.
- No extreme weather.
- Varied scenery and landscapes.

Please add your own.

Poll: Which of these events will happen the soonest?

If we were still in the EU my wife and I would probably move to the Mediterranean somewhere in a few years.

Might still do, just be more of a pain.

Exactly what we have now done. Thank heavens for my Dad being born in Ireland.

No looking back. We have found our happy place for the rest of our lives.

The tolerance.

I was tackling weeds in the garden today and a Spitfire flew overhead. I recognized the sound of the merlin engine before I saw it. Awesome sound. It flew away from me, banked back round flew back and did a barrel roll and then headed West. I tracked it on flightradar24. Turns out it was a 2 seat trainer Spitfire originally built in 1946. Flies from different airports to get the business. Today it was flying out of Norwich Airport. On their website you can book a half hour trip for £3500. Not cheap ! That is what is good about life in the UK. There is often a pleasant surprise to be had on an otherwise dull day.

Nothing wrong with that, Mellow. You saw one of the most beautiful, iconic, deadly aircraft in history. Nothing quite compares. You hear one and I defy anyone not to look up.

I want to do the Spitfire experience end of this year or next. The full one. I want to actually fly it. Thank you for the reminder!

To be born British is to have won the lottery of life.
By that I dont mean that in any way we are superior to say North Koreans or Iranians or Chinese, just luckier.

We have free speach, NHS and education.
Freedom of movement and a respected passport.
Nobody is going to break down the door if I state that Starmer or Nigel or Boris et al are tw@ts.

And dont even get me on the pubs and real ale.

Always relevant to personal circumstances but having left over 10 years ago:

The thing I miss:

- Good Indian food (which is odd because there is tones of Indian's in the US maybe just not older generations)
- Safe Public transit after 10pm
- Mid range supermarkets that are still decent
- Real pint glasses
- Sausage Rolls

Things I don't miss:

- Everyone moaning
- The wages
- Last orders
- The service
- The weather
- Liv St to Ips line

Indian food also a problem in Australia. Have to resort to Misty Ricardo recipes (look it up if you want british style curries) - scratched my head for years over this as we have a huge Indian community where I am - I believe the Indian cooks in UK are from Bangladesh, and the Indian food isnt actually Indian food is adaptations.

'Think of what our Nation stands for,
Books from Boots' and country lanes,
Free speech, free passes, class distinction,
Democracy and proper drains.'

John Betjeman clearly agreed with you.

Pubs are wonderful things and nowhere else does them quite like the UK.

Having left nearly 8 years ago this is what I miss so in my eyes this is what's good about the UK

It has real natural beauty, from the coastlines, the mountains and rolling green hills etc
Proper pubs( although they seem to be dissappearing]
Fish and chip shops
Music scene( live and Rave) so much choice pretty much everyday of the year
London is such a great airport hub
Cider and beers( I don't really drink real ales now but I know how good they are)
Sense of humour
ITFC of course!

Foreign food always gets a local take on it. I live in the Netherlands and Chinese tastes nothing like the UK, it has an Indonesian slant. Kebabs are different, so is Indian food.
