What a shambles of a season that was!! 17:59 - May 25 with 3176 views | Chrisd | So pleased it’s finally over, but I’ve been embarrassed the way we’ve been since the turn of the year. I hope questions are asked about what’s happened this season? How can a team keep making the same mistakes game after game and never learn from them?! It’s Groundhog Day watching this Town side. No home points in 2025 - woeful! It’s certainly going to be an interesting summer for us, but we need to start well next season otherwise that pressure will start mounting. [Post edited 25 May 18:04]

We could have spent 300 million and it probably still would not have been enough. In this division you need at least two 20-30 million players for every position just to compete with the other teams, we have about 5 in the whole squad and also had loads of injuries along the way. As a club we are in such a better place than 3 years ago and have so much to look forward to, the club under Marcus Evens was an embarrassment not todays club.

Disagree. We invested poorly with arguably the wrong strategy. We got worse not better as the season progressed. We finished below Leicester who are crap. Luton spent less and got more points

I’m on board for all of this reuser. It’s been shambolic. That doesn’t take anything away from the previous two seasons, and there’s every chance we can come back stronger. But this season has been so far below what it should have been. One home win is unacceptable. Tinpot fans then blame the refs and the premier league and that just adds to the embarrassment.

We have a lot to get right this summer, and let’s see if we can do it, but getting it right in the PL was always highly likely to be an iterative process.

So we should be getting 4/5ths of the Bournemouth points total and 8/11ths of Forests points total ?

Correct, it’s been a rude awakening for many, me included. Easy to say now it was always going to be like this. We were the sexy pick nationally to do quite well after McKenna stayed, although I’m sure some of the top ten stuff was clickbait nonsense. However, even amongst some of our more pessimistic fans, I think the line of thought was (if they are being honest) we’d be right in it at the end, even if we didn’t have enough. I mean Luton went through the playoffs, barely spent and got 6 wins, look at what the ambition we are showing. That was basically how many were thinking. Terrible campaign however we dress it up, I am just pleased we’d have needed 40 odd points (was never happening) and not 30, as that would have been annoying.

No, not really. They’ve had 4 seasons or more of PL transfers in too. 4 years at least of building a squad at that level. We could have managed some games better, but that comes with more experience at this level. It’s still bloody disappointing and no-one probably predicted us losing so many at home, but we’ve at least had our reality check now. Up to Ashton and the ownership to give McKenna the best budget to keep those we want and bring in players who are basically ringers for this league. Whether loans or permanent.

It's not "too" though. That's already accounted for by that wage bill. They haven't bought in extra players that are not paid. I'm just a little surprised by that graphic in that our wage bill was not far short of some of the "big 17", I thought they would be at least double that of the promoted sides.

No need to wager, we all thought we'd be better at home than it turned out. If you thought we'd go down though, why all the angst now seeing as our relegation was confirmed some weeks ago (for me the January window looked like a team building for a Championship campaign next season rather than splurging on a chance of stayng up this term). Don't want to make a big thing of it, just observations.

But Brentford have obviously brought players in for similar wages. That’s good scouting. They’ve built that squad over 4 years though in the PL. Easier to get better value from overseas too in that situation. We’ve built a L1 squad for the Championship and ended up in the PL with a huge amount of work. Our squad compared to Brentford when they went up is night and day.

Thing is,blaming the Premier League - or at least the teams in it - makes sense, because everyone of them was genuinely capable of beating us home and away , which wasn’t always going to be the case in the Championship or League One. Our post Christmas form was a real letdown, but I’m not entirely surprised that it happened after 22 years away.

At last a sensible post. Some of the players playing in teams in the top half the premier league were brought for 15-20mil and have performed way better than any of our players. West ham were awful today and looked like they didn't care and we still lost 3-1 at home. Some really really poor investment and tactically very naive.

Think we've exhausted that point. I'm broadly in agreement really, it's a huge gap that would have required perfect recruitment and a lot of luck to survive. I'm also of the opinion McKenna is the best choice to get us back up. I just feel we shouldn't just shrug off losing every single home match in 2025 and the dismal results. I think we should have recruited better and done better. The old adage is that the league table at the end of the season never lies. I don't think we can start talking about fine margins after 38 games as though that adage doesn't apply to us. They'll have evened themselves out. [Post edited 25 May 23:23]
