What I still don’t understand is … 22:56 - May 25 with 3784 views | ringwoodblue | Why did we get worse as the season progressed rather than better? Did opposition teams just work us out after the first few months? Were we too predictable? Was it injuries to key players? Did the players just stop trying so hard?

What I still don’t understand is … on 10:23 - May 26 with 719 views | textbackup | We went into a PL season with a striker that was unproven at this level, an injury stricken striker and a L2 striker. And very few questioned that, because we tried, and it’s a hard position to recruit in.

I think striker has been the least of our problems. Delap has done well enough to have PL clubs queuing up to pay £30m for his signature. Central midfield has been the biggest issue as we haven;t been able to transition to our front 4. The defence has struggled largely because it has consequently been under so much pressure. Goalkeeper has been an issue. McKenna admitted that he goofed with buying Muric when he bought Palmer, a steady Championship keeper, to replace him.

What I still don’t understand is … on 08:48 - May 26 by DJR | When it comes to away games, I don't think we got worse as the season progressed. We put in a number of very good performances after Christmas and with a bit of luck could have got more points than we did. Fulham, Palace, Man Utd and Leicester spring to mind. Understand what you:re saying but Manchester United? First half, maybe, but the second half was abysmal. In general, that is another question, though. Why were we better away from home than at home?

We were having to play full tilt every week just to get a point at best on most occasions. It was like trying to play 38 Cup Finals. We had to be bang at it every week to even have a chance of getting a draw

probably because McKenna felt a certain obligation to attack more when at home, which left us very vulnerable on the break. When we got a corner, I felt the opposition were more likely to score than we were.

What I still don’t understand is … on 07:25 - May 26 by ArnieM | Our PL opponents are superiorvtacyicslky and during the second half if the season ( and even during games( were able to change their approach to counter McKenna's approach/ tactics. McKenna continued with plan A and opponents knew exactly how he'd set up and play. This will also be the case next season unless has it in his locker to ADAPT, and I've said this all season. |
I've always said McKenna is very predictable in his actions I hope a lesson learnt and he deserves the opportunity to put things right. If things don't improve like most owners there will be change before the January window opens.

What I still don’t understand is … on 06:30 - May 26 by RegencyBlue | Yeah, the set piece coach who started last summer hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory. They really have been appallingly bad this season! |
What's the poor guy supposed to do ? I doubt he spends all week going yeah make sure you can't clear the first man at every corner, or if you do work out how to lift the ball boot it really hard past the back post where there's no one standing. Same for free kicks punt it so it's a 50/50 ball to our smallest player on the pitch up against some man mountain defender | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It was a huge problem when Delap got his suspension and Hirst yet another injury, which means Newcastle at home we literally had nothing up front.

I'm sure the likes of Brentford and Bournemouth have significantly bigger squads, (even if it's just three or four bigger) because they have more U21s, - some well established within the first team squad and some on its fringes. And it's not just about availability for selection, but also about maintaining a higher standard in training.

Exactly this! Hirsts injury saw us so vulnerable up top. (When Delap went off) We had a player coming on that every single fan knew would make zero impact. I would imagine every player also saw it as a needs must, and that we’d likely balls up any chance that was created.

What I still don’t understand is … on 17:04 - May 26 with 415 views | LankHenners | In the previous two seasons we were able to put our foot on the gas in the latter half of them as we had deeper and fitter squads than most everyone else (or had been able to get ourselves to a position through rotation where we could just put our best XI out pretty much every time). This season we've been on the other end of that. Plus confidence/belief probably played quite a large part - winning is infectious once you get on a role; unfortunately losing is the same.

What I still don’t understand is … on 04:15 - May 26 by MVBlue | As we bedded the new players in.... The confidence and nous and patterns of play faded. Also, Premier League teams seem to really kick into gear further into the season. All mistakes were punished, our solidity waned. Fade away |
My theory is you need to get your bulk of your points in the first half of the season, you have that surprise factor at that stage

We had nothing in midfield and the defence wasn’t up to much either. The Newcastle game was done and dusted in the first minute. Ok, the second went in after half an hour but we never laid a glove on them. If they’d needed ten they’d have scored eleven. You could have had Messi and Ronaldo up front in their prime and it’d have made not a jot of difference. No service, no support. But your point is well made in that it would’ve been nice to have somebody up there to get Newcastles defenders out of the deckchairs. Old and a bit slow for the Premier League, I’ve always felt it a shame we couldn’t or didn’t retain Moore.

What I still don’t understand is … on 02:56 - May 26 by Illinoisblue | Injuries. Frequently exposed on the left, nothing on the right expect for Omari cutting inside, massive gaps in the middle. Injuries. Very minimal prem experience. Injuries. A wobbly keeper for half the season. Constant changes in defence. Nothing much up top other than Delap. Injuries. Content inability in every single game to apply any sort of sustained pressure on teams. Think that covers it. Is it August yet? |
