Full disclosure. I think the honours system is the very worst of us. It’s massively privileged c-nts patting other predominately massively c-nts on the back.

Anyway.

Jenni Bond just called him the king of football on my radio. What a tvvat she is. Glasgow blue once told me off for calling another old woman a tvvat on these pages so hopefully he’s not reading.

Apparently he’s (beckham, not gb) been petitioning for this for some time.

What a load of sh1te

He does a lot of good work when increasingly men with public profiles are using their fame/wealth/power to be complete c-units. So I don't begrudge him it at all. He's earned it. But he wouldn't have been able to earn it without being rich/famous, so that's where I have an issue with the system.

If nothing else, it’s a chance for that talentless, waxwork clothes horse he’s stuck with to don something suitably hideous for the photo ops outside the Palace.

Might also save the poor lad having to hawk that awful Stella Artois horse pish for a week or two..

It all just feels like a really poor attempt by the monarchy to become popular with the general public after a lot of (justified) bad press.

They are so out of touch that they'll probably give similar awards to Harry Enfield and Rick Astley next.

Jenny Bond serves no useful purpose as a BBC Journalist, but I have no issue with David Beckham, always gave 100% as a player. Worthy of a knighthood, who knows, but then again as the OP said, honours system is flawed.

I think he's worthy of it when you look at some of the rogues who have received knighthoods over the years. Yes Jimmy Saville I'm looking at you.

Me too. I watched in a pub in SW London. Packed to the rafters it was. When he scored it went mental and so did we.

Back to the honours system, the way it works in this country and what it’s for I don’t agree with any of it.

I think the honours system is a good idea badly done.

I can see the benefit to mark somebody that has reached the top of their profession.
Who on here would take the knighthoods from Alf or Bobby.
I can see the point in rewarding those that have benefitted society.
I can see the point for our ambassadors. For them to be a Sir gives them more kudos when dealing with the locals.

Where it all goes wrong is the cronyism, especially with politicians and civil servants.
That brings the whole thing into disrepute.

If somebody reaches the top of their profession, they are usually amply rewarded. Adding on top of that? Why? Getting sportsmen and arty people into the HoL to comment/affect our daily lives because they excelled on roller skates or something? Why? Lord Coe: ran around a lot, failed politician, did ok with the Olympics, nice bloke (Mrs C has met him). No reason whatsoever he should be voting on any stuff that affects me.

An honours/medal system exists for bravery. Rightly so. Give people a legion d’honneur equivalent for services such as charity raising of extraordinary contribution to society - I’m all for it. That’s enough.

As for politicians - they should get a legion d’kichupthearse-eur, not all aboard the gravy train at £361 per day and the finest dining in London.

No, it's not.

I believe that everybody who's not a serial nonce, rapist and necrophiliac should be given a knighthood.

It makes it easier for us to spot them.

100% this. The honours system is at best primitively populist (celebrities, sportsmen etc) and at worst hugely corrupt (businessmen donating to a political party, MPs being kept onside by the hint of a knighthood in the offing). Handing out ancient feudal titles is anachronistic for a modern, meritocratic society. Don't get me started on the House of Lords!

I was speaking about knight/damehoods which stand at the top of the OBE, MBE, CBE systems.
Shipping people off the the HOL is something else.

But before you reform the Lords make sure what you replace it with is better than what we have now.

If it is elected then it has a serious justification to stop the Commons. So it must be appointed. Personally I cant see any problem with the major religious leaders being there. Arch bishops, chief rabbi, leaders of muslims, hindus etc.

Then how about an automatic right for MPs that have, say, 25 years service.

Who else would you put in there ?

Knighthoods, OBEs all of it - in the bin. Knighthoods for the likes of Beckham are stepping stones to the HoL just as it was for Ian Botham and others. One award, French style, for charitable, extraordinary contribution to society is enough. Bravery awards, civilian and military are fine as they are.

Just about anything is better than a second Chamber consists of chinless inbreeds sprung from the loins of historical landowners/gentry, handsomely paid sports people, actors and people from the arts, so called business men - knumskulls peddling rubbish like Alan Sugar and old, failed politicians wheeled in to boost the numbers supporting their awful policies.

Why should religious people be in it? Or failed, useless politicians whose mission since god knows when has been to make everyone poorer.

Since none of these people are qualified and most only turn up for the cracking lunch and expenses, there is other ways you could do it. Draft your average person in for say a two year stint as you do for Jury service. Alternatively make the second chamber an electable one concentrating on the legal aspects. Maybe draft a person from each council from the majority party?

Lastly, just scrap it. We elect MPs to make policy and to see it implemented. That should not be subject to delay and blocking by a load of unelected crusties. Let’s face it, at the base of all this, the HoL exists to perpetuate the pyramid system of privilege headed up by monarchy.

Just thoughts and ideas off the top of my head.
