Never in my 20 years of life have I tried before. Bought some grated Emmental from Tesco to put on tonight’s pasta.

Completely ruined, horrid cheese.

Yes yes I meant in the Omelette. As in it goes on top of the omelette when it's still being created in the pan.

I am lucky enough to be in Bordeaux with an old friend this weekend.

Having followed this post throughout the day we discussed it in detail over a seriously good bottle of red wine and and a beautiful array of local cheeses earlier this afternoon. Needless to say, after such an indulgent afternoon we’re currently at peace with the world.

Our conclusion is that choosing the right cheese for the job is a critical step in the journey of life experience.

As Bob Mortimer once said, ‘once they’ve taken cheese from you there’s nothing to live for’….

Actually I have a point to make here to all you people saying it doesn't belong on pasta. Just looked at the packaging and it has a picutre on it melted onto some pasta. So what was I supposed to think?!

There’s nothing wrong with trying stuff out and if it proves no good, you know for next time and to try something else.

Cheese is food of the gods. I mangle far too much of it. I’m not a fan of Emmental but Mrs C is so there is usually some in the house.

There is a huge difference in quality of cheese with the same names on them. For example, a Red Leicester from a standard supermarket shelf is about as bland as any cheese can be. But get the good quality real stuff and boy, happy days!

For pasta, pizza, even chilli, Parmisan is good as is the other grateable cheeses like Parmigiano. I like to try foreign cheeses an£ the only place where that’s a waste of time is America. All the same, not unpleasant but bland.

As a cheesepig I like to try different ones but my go to favourites are strong cheddar style cheeses in all their regional varieties and of course Stilton and Blue cheeses.

Couldn't agree more, I had some thinly sliced Snowdonia aged Red Leicester earlier today and it was ruddly lovely. Supermarket Red Leicester may as well be American cheese.

If you're exploring the cheese world OP, then buy less but better quality.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

No, they’re both from cows, which are completely different animals to goats. Goats don’t get stuck in ditches and have to be rescued by the fire brigade for a start.



(I think I agree. A seriously tangy farmhouse cheddar is God’s food. Parmesan isn’t far behind and it’s a crisis in our house if we haven’t got a block on the go. Plus it lasts for ages in the fridge, which is always a bonus).

For the record I had the same meal tonight and I even added soft cheese to it for more cheeseness. Then put parmesan on top.

Emmental amd Gruyere are great Swiss cheeses.
Buying a grated Tesco version is never going to be nice!
Adding it to pasta, you might aswell use dairylea!
You need to understand what cheese you're eating and what it's designed for!


Only just caught up with this thread and now have the image of someone grating Dairylea...I reckon more cheese (well, imitation of cheese) in the grater than on the dish.

Actually I do.

I make my own pizzas, from scratch including the dough and buying the cheese pre-grated is the thing I do to lessen the effort a little.
