Best zombie and / or apocalyptic film 23:40 - Jun 21 with 1120 viewsredrickstuhaart

Putting aside series, for the sake of simplicity and clarity.

Im watching 28 days later. Saw it years ago, but the new sequel intrigued me so I thought Id go back. Really very good indeed. Probably underappreciated it at the time.

So - best apocalyptic film, zombies or otherwise. And why?

I fecking love the end of the world.

Zombies - Zombieland. Just fun throughout, not taking itself too seriously.

Apocalypse - The Day After Tomorrow. Mainly for being able to rewatch it.

Zombieland, for the cameo.

If you know, you know, but I don't want to spoiler it for those who don't!

There's an incredibly intense Spanish kinda-zombie film called Rec which I consider to be a modern masterpiece.

Shaun of the Dead deserves a mention for several brilliant set-piece comedy scenes. I prefer it to Hot Fuzz and The World's End, but the latter certainly meets your criteria.

Tarantino's Dawn Till Dusk is flawed, but has some great moments of intensity.

The Quiet Earth is brilliant. Very different from the usual apocalypse films.

Zombie wise, I like Zombieland for the lols (the Bill Murray cameo in particular is sublime) and 28 Days Later is also very good.

Shaun of the Dead, because it works as both a horror film AND a comedy.

Threads ...I need say no more......but I will, I was in my very early teens when it was broadcast at the height of the cold war.
I actually got my teen daughter to watch it a year or 2 ago hoping but not expecting to show the power of it and what we lived with in the back of our heads all the time.
She had the same reaction which is quite incredible and she's seen it all like most teens these days.

I think I am leaning towards The Road.

Though it is not a film I will ever choose to watch again. That one genuinely affected me for days.

I havent watched zombieland. Perhaps I should.

I understand the votes for Shaun, but its not the best one, surely?!

Yes t'was very bleak...I'll skip the book then.

Always been a fan of "cosy catastrophe" .. Day of the Triffids deffo in the top 3...but the series rather than the film in that case.

Cormac McCarthy is a very good writer, always enjoy his work. Always hard hitting and a always seems to include hard travelling through Mexico/ Southern states etc beautifully described.

The first half of the film is really good, never really liked it after the blood droplet went into the dad's eye. Bit of a silly ending in my eye. I don't think the squaddies would turn the way they do after only 28 days.

I quite like I am legend. Both endings are very good.

I am legend is not quite a remake of The Omega Man but based on the same book.

We just recently rewatched 28 Days Later as well. One of my favourite movies, although watching this time we thought the girl's accent was bad. Hadn't noticed that before.

For zombies - World War Z. Think it got slated by the critics but I love it. Like a big budget Hollywood version of 28 Days Later, with very fast zombies!

As for apocalyptic, I'd recommend Cloverfield. Coherence and Snowpiercer. First two very suspenseful, particularly in the way they don't fully show what's going on. Snowpiercer has an odd premise - the remains of humanity live on a train! But it's cleverly done and well acted as society divides up between different classes (again).

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Definitely Zombieland. I always thought Shaun of the Dead was a bit overrated to be honest (Hot Fuzz was a lot better out of the Cornetto Trilogy).

The first 2 Planet of the Apes films in the original series of 5.
Unfortunately as a kid I saw them in a jumbled up order.
I think 3,5,1,4,2 which is so wrong.
And this was jumbled up with reading the Marvel comics of the same stories.
I remember 2..Beneath the POTA really disturbing me as a comic and then the film slightly less so.
I've only watched the 1st one again since, which is a classic.

Didn’t think much to 28 Days Later when I watched it originally and watched it again last night...my opinion hasn’t changed. Started well, finished poorly. I always thought 28 Weeks Later was much better and am watching it tonight on Prime. Really looking forward to the new one.

Zombieland probably my favourite too, although no zombie movie will ever beat the first 7 seasons of Walking Dead for me....loved that show

Don't understand all the mentions for soap operas in this thread...anyway, Romero's 'Night Of The Living Dead' is pretty much the defining film and all that follows (including Romero's sequels) seem a bit unnecessary.

Away from zombie slice of life documentaries I have to thank Herbivore for mentioning 'The Quiet Earth', a film I saw decades ago and never made a mental note of even though it impressed me so much (ah, married life and a corporate job.) Also, haven't seen 'The Road' but have read Cormac McCarthy's book and it is one of the best of quite a few post-apocalyptic novels I have read. Gird yourself and get through it if you can.

Finally, a mention for the 2010 low budget film 'Monsters', effective for an understated approach and for the remarkable frugality employed:

'The filming equipment cost approximately $15,000...such a low budget largely due to the production using consumer grade prosumer level equipment instead of professional paraphernalia. The film was shot using digital video cameras rather than the more expensive 35 mm film and was edited on a laptop computer...For about 90 per cent of the principal photography, the crew consisted of seven people transported in one van'

Quick vote for Village of the Damned, which was based on the Wyndham book The Midwich Cuckoos, and the original Mad Max.

I also liked Threads and 28 days later, although the ending is bloody terrible.

Remake of Day of the dead (2008). Great zombie film and sorta reinvented the genre.
And for an apocalypse film, I'd go for an early - mid 80's tv movie, The Day After. Superb and genuinely frightening. I seem to remember it being shown as a mini series originally but also available in movie form.

The Day After is an American version of Threads, made around the same time, slightly easier on the bleak/grim scale. There is a scene I thought really effective though:

Shivers. It reminds me of the public service films of that time. When you think back, any of us who grew up in the 70s/early 80s should be inured to the global conflicts and instability we see on our screens every day. Back then it felt like we were a hair’s breadth away from utter annihilation, the gory details of which were broadcast into our homes by the government and pushed through our letter boxes by CND.

As for Zombie films, meh not my thing and don’t understand the fascination (same with zombie computer games).
