Think the point Joe makes is that he’s in the last year of his deal - although imagine there’d be an option to extend?

Yeah I absolutely appreciate that. From my point of view, I'm just not sure it would be worth the risk to offload him now when his value is relatively static.

I think there's enough value in risking losing him for nothing and having that stability with two midfielders who know the system to start the year and his 5 goals.

I imagine he will probably start the first few games next year whilst we bed in any new signings anyway.

Pretty much the way I've been seeing this transfer window.

Although I still wince at the notion of selling Broady (just sentimentality, really).

I hope we make Broady an offer , love to see him stay .

Assume by 'make a profit' on Taylor and Broadhead, you mean take an offer this summer instead of losing them for nothing next? I'm not sure we get the £1.5m fee's we paid for them with a year left on their contracts.

I don't see why we wouldn't personally - both full internationals with PL experiences who would go and start for a lot of non parachute Champ clubs

Know Ben Mee excites people. I am a little reticent about his age though (36 in September) given he played so little last season (181 minutes). Makes it harder to judge what's left in the tank and gives me Richard Keogh vibes, hopefully unfairly. We made that work but perhaps more because of how little Keogh was needed (as well as L1 being less physically demanding).

Morsy and Humphreys +2 isn't enough in CM for me. Long campaign ahead, need five capable players even if the fifth is a utility player. I'd be happy to keep Taylor in the squad if his sale value is low (would be surprised if Humphreys is better right now and promotion is key).

Otherwise that sounds good, albeit I'd be sad to see Broadhead go. Jury is massively out on whether Downes may become a PL regular in a team that stays up but he's proven himself at this level.* Brownhill would be awesome. I wasn't that impressed with Kone in the short amount I saw on TV but that was only a few games.

*Removed the part about him being short because it isn't something I've noticed with my eyes - think this is an inverse Slicker situation with online sources.

Maybe keep Ben Johnson in squad as he can play RB, RW and CM as a utility option?

But he'd be an expensive squad member to be a utility player

I don't disagree with much of that but (playing devil's advocate) would replacing Morsy, Omari and Delap with Downes, a loan and Kone constitute an ambitious summer?

I think spending best part of £50m in the Championship it has to be seen as so

I juts don't see that he offers a huge amount with how we play, he's never settled into system for me and whilst I like him as a player he just seems at the wrong club - should be able to get a good fee and find someone who is a better fit here to develop

Sell Johnson and keep Clarke, madness Joe!

I think it would be a huge mistake to sell Broadhead. I just can’t see yet how Szmodics or particularly Clarke and Philogene have shown to be improvements. Yes, they scored more in the championship last year but Sunderland finished 16th and we’re 4th this year after selling Clarke. Blackburn just escaped relegation and have improved since selling Szmodics. Broadhead also got 13 goals but in a team that finished second which would suggest a greater overall contribution than just his goals, and I think that was obvious from the link-up play with Davis. This season, Broadhead started seven games and we got seven points from them. That’s two wins out of just four all season. I recognise that he had some very anonymous performances too like Wolves but that seemed more like Clarke and Philogene every game. Clarke started 12 games across a wide range of the season, and from those we picked up 2 points. Philogene started 5 games and we scored 0 points. Clarke was very good in the championship and against Coventry but I don’t think that’s enough to put him ahead of Broadhead yet in the pecking order. I really hope we keep Broadhead. But I had similar thoughts regarding Burgess vs Greaves.

I agree with all the rest except I think we need 5 in CM, so maybe would be worth keeping Taylor as one of those. But definitely two huge signings are needed. I also suspect it might be hard to find a better third choice than Al-Hamadi.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

I had a look this morning and when he was signed it said "an initial three-year deal", so wouldn't surprise me if there is an option of some kind.

Personally, I don't mind which 2 of Walton, Palmer and Muric we keep as I think there is little between them. I agree Slicker could do with a loan. If Muric stays as number 1 it will go one of 2 ways fairly quickly I would imagine.

I would like to see us re-sign Broadhead but he wasn't first choice at all last season so I presume McKenna doesn't rate him for the Premier League. I am not sure Taylor would command a profit either.

I'll play...

Final squad - 25 seniors + 2 U21 emergency 3rd choice GK / ST
GK - Muric, Palmer, [U21 Keeper - Gray, or new signing if not ready for step up]
RB - Tuanzebe, H. Clarke
LB - Davis, Townsend
RCB - Woolfie, O'Shea
LCB - Greaves, Baggott
RCM - Morsy, [New Signing]
LCM - [New Signing - Cajuste?], Taylor
RW - Johnson, Ogbene, Burns
R10 - Hutchinson, Philogene, Chaplin
L10 - J. Clarke, Szmodics, Broadhead
ST - Hirst, [New Senior Signing], [New U21 Signing]

That leaves Walton (Loan or Sell - last year of contract, and I think Muric has greater potential), Slicker (Loan), Humphreys (Loan), Al-Hamadi (Loan) Question marks over Tuanzebe with the contract situation, and whether Baggott would be better served by another season on loan (in which case, would need to sign another CB) or staying with the squad for back-up / cup games.

Probably not as much change as a lot of people will be clamouring for, but I think we built a squad last season with one eye on bouncing back if we got relegated - plenty of new players who weren't with us last time around who performed very well in their last Championship seasons.

Joe do you see us bslancung the books in the coming season, with a bonus of of an on paper saving from not having take unto account the cost of Delap & Hutchinson over the following three years.

Assuming promotion we should be in a good position to spend next summer.

Great post, sadly right on Omari, MONSTER signings needed, Johnson on 17:50 - Jun 25 with 290 viewsunstableblue

Your post lines up with my thinking

Watching the England u21s now and the cooing commentator over Hutchinson, no way his £35m clause isn’t getting triggered.

Other points:

1. Will Walton want to stay for another year as number 2? Doubt it. Agree on Muric exit

2. Need Axel, or a MONSTER signing. Concern is whether Axel can be resigned and/or get back to that solid fitness pre-sinkgate

3. Don’t quite see how Johnson fits in - but could thrive in Champ as right back. A lot injury return questions on our Right hand attack.

4. SERIOUS monster signings needed in midfield and number 9 - I’m expecting big money spent on people who will be Prem ready for 26/27

There's not that much to balance, parachute money, the players that came in last summer would all have relegation built into their contracts in terms of wage cuts. There will be one more big sale and I think it will be Omari, as I said months ago. The one advantage of not shopping big abroad on top flight players is the contracts would have been easier to structure and most will stay.

This isn't directed at you but I do think some of our fanbase are not exactly quite sure where the club is at the moment financially and statue. We should be literally the most attractive clubs to join outside of the PL twenty clubs and we have the funds.

Some of the players I saw people desperate to hold onto and potential signings mentioned, it was like we were coming up from league one! Not sure if it's nostalgia or not used to what a year in the top flight does for you. I know they had more years previously but fans should ask themselves if the players they are wanting to retain or bring in would have been anywhere near the Leeds/Burnley squad of last year.

Johnson has played plenty of PL games at right back and is absolute light years ahead of Harry Clarke in terms of ability. Would be an exceptional talent in the Championship.

Clarke is strong going forward and had a good connection with Burns but I just can't see them starting games together regularly with the squad talent we have now. Burns is also 30 and coming off a bad injury, may be a second of the half season sub.

If Axel goes, I would happily start the season with Johnson at RB with a license to go forward especially if we are not playing an out an out right winger and even if we are, he would be fine (just maybe a bit bored lol).

Spot on which is why I said I'd probably not let him go,
Started poorly for us but was one of the best performers last 7 or 8 games,

He's better than the Championship as his career suggest with Axel attracting attention vital to keep him.

There just isn't any point selling Jack Taylor IMO. You'd be selling a proven player in the system (who hasn't disgraced himself in 32 games at PL level) for a few million in favour of a different more expensive 'punt' who will take time to get up to speed with the team and system.

He's hugely beneficial as a squad player IMO and if he has a half decent season, he doubles in value.

I have to disagree with that. Taylor looks anonymous every time he plays, and the fact that he played so many times for us last season partly explains why we went down so badly, in that our midfield options weren't nearly good enough for the league.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
