Best player in the last 20 years? 10:30 - Jul 15 with 1461 viewsBessacarrBlue

Last night as my son was going to bed and we discussed Moray’s seemingly impending departure, he asked who town’s best players of the last 20 years have been. Given he’s only been going to games for 5 years his sphere of reference is limited. Within the context of the last twenty years, I said that Morsy would have to be in the conversation if we took ‘best’ to include ‘important’. Any other suggestions ready for the discussion at bedtime later??

In last 5 years, absolutely.

He's been with us 4.

Brought in during the demolition era. Of those that Cook binned, I guess Chambers and Skuse were the only ones I was sad to see leave the club, but he'll have not really seen those two.

Probably only Chappers who can push him for consideration in that time period.

Moving back.

McGoldrick
Murphy
Majilton
Chambers
Counago
Cresswell
Mings (good, but perhaps much better after leaving us)

I don't know....it's not a great list is it?

Jon Walters is probably on a shortlist over that period too. Magilton retired in 2005 so my shortlist is probably:

Wilnis
Walters
Murphy
McGoldrick
Bart
Chambers
Pablo

Plus from the current era;

Morsy
Chaplin
Leif

Criteria:
Must have been here at least three seasons, and value for money relative to our budget at the time. Lots of high-impact players in the shorter-term or players who did ok but cost us a lot of money in relative terms.

Not all of those were the best players at the club at the time, far from it in some case but their continuity and commitment were critical. There are plenty of other players I really like but don't make that criteria.

Bart was the last line of defence and did that job exceptionally for three years.

Murphy was unplayable during that one season.

But Morsy has been the heartbeat of that team and him and Mass had that innate understanding with each others game.

Morsy was my Tarrico and will be hard to replace, been a kingpin in getting us 2 promotions.
Going to be tough to get a squad similar to that group.

Sylvain Legwinski was an absolute Rolls Royce of a player, but only with us for two seasons.

Too many of the best players of the past 25 years have been one season loanees: Gio, Fraser, J Williams, Celina, Lawrence. And DJ Campbell was lethal during his short loan spell.

In with a shout for "Best Player to play for Ipswich in the last 20 years" is Chris Wood. It's just that he wasn't at his best during his time here, and has only fully blossomed relatively late in his career. There's a fair chance that the OPs son doesn't know that Chris Wood played for Ipswich, and that it was that spell that resurrected his career, so worth including in the chat!

If you were trying to put a team together, with those criteria, Alan Lee would be in with a shout, too.

And I absolutely loved Stephen Hunt. A fantastic footballer and an inspiration to his team mates.

Morsy, Davis and Chaplin, in that order, are the standouts of the double promotion.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

Gio and Delap. No question.

Honourable mentions for Magilton, Wilnis, Scowie, Walters, McAuley, Cresser, maybe Murphy? and loads of the recent bunch - Leif, Hutch, Morsy, Tuanzebe, Woolfie, Tuanzebe, maybe even Chappers.

And then you've got the likes of Delaney and Mings who were good here and went on to be even better and have solid careers in the PL.

I actually think the best player during that time would be McGoldrick although Gio runs him very close. McGoldrick was Premier League class even while he was with us. Gio didn't stay long enough but it was wonderful entertainment while he was here.

Most influential is probably Morsy but I would mention Chaplin and Burns too.

In the last 20 years Scowcroft is only included for his loan return.

I assume you’re judging only on their time here? Gio was a far better player than McGoldrick overall. Over a 100 Mexico caps, played in the top leagues across several countries. His time here was limited of course. He was an absolute stand out in that time, whereas we didn’t really see the best of McGoldrick due to injuries. Undoubtedly he was a talent, but I’ll stick with Gio.

David McGoldrick was the real deal. The passing, the control. He was targeted by teams auch as Sheff Weds to be kicked too.

Gareth McAuley was a great player, we built out from the back and started suffering when he left. He was a great defender and helped the best Northern Ireland team in 40 years have a good run in tournament qualifications.

Connor Wickham would have gone on to great things for us but went to the Premier League.

Jimmy Bullard was still a very good player and saved us from League One in his time.

Mings, Murphy, Walters, Counago, were all good but its probably McCauley VS McGoldrick for me.
