3–4 weeks ago, if you had said Delap, Tuanzebe, Morsy, Hutchinson would be leaving and incoming would be Button (36), Young (40), Matusiwa (good on paper, but with no experience in English football), I think there would be some concerned faces.
While I understand the logic behind signing Young, the Championship is a different beast. The relentless Saturday–Tuesday fixtures and 40–50 game schedule are completely different to playing in the Premiership, where you benefit from 7 days of rest and recovery (if you're not involved in Europe) and regular international breaks.
I think we've lost a few vital components in our squad. Losing the likes of Luongo, Morsy, Tuanzebe is a big loss in terms of leadership and voice on the pitch. Importantly, this leadership has been backed up on the pitch, largely by Morsy, who leads by example and isn't just a presence/voice in the changing room. I'm not sure the likes of Matusiwa will be able to turn around to Davis and Clarke and give them an earful for not tracking back etc.
Another thing we've lost is that searing pace that the likes of Hutchinson and Delap gave us. There are big, big questions about whether Ogbene can return after a very serious Achilles injury and Burns (30) an ACL, where players never quite reach the same levels of movement and explosiveness they previous had.
For me, we should be good enough to be around the play offs, but I'm highly doubtful we're top 2 quality at the moment. We don't have the physicality in midfield, have lost leadership across the pitch, and we lack the pace to really hurt teams—that's essential against teams that will come up to PR and set up for a point.

I understand that you might feel underwhelmed by our business so far, but the way you've structured your argument doesn't quite hold up.
As another poster pointed out, you mention losing leadership but don’t acknowledge the experience and leadership Ashley Young brings to the squad.
You also raise concerns about a lack of physicality in midfield, yet don’t mention that we've just signed a midfielder who significantly strengthens us in that area.
Doing business at the top end of the Championship is notoriously tough. Just last year, Leeds lost their best striker, winger, and midfielder. Burnley lost their top winger, midfielder, and defender.
Notably, Burnley signed nine players in August alone. Leeds completed half of their six signings in the final 10 days of the window. Sheffield United also made five summer signings in August.
History tells us there is no need to be concerned. What we need is quality—not just players who happen to be available in June or July. |
At least Leeds kept most of their top players in the Championship in the immediate season after relegation - Summerville, Gnoto, Rutter and signed Piroe + Rodon on loan, for us it seems our top players don’t even want to stay for one Championship season, all are trying to escape the club like passengers on the Titanic
Well plenty of people might say it’s still early but the business done in the last three transfer windows (Delap, and possibly O’Shea/Szmodics aside) has been pi$$ poor, either overpaying for players not fit for purpose to hit the ground running or duds like Muric and Ben Godfrey

I'm not too worried, as there is a long way to go. What I would say is;
Luongo and Tuanzebe played very specialist roles in our set up during the Championship promotion campaign.
We never did succeed in replacing Luongo effectively, and arguably still havent. Will we recruit the right personnel to operate a similar system? Or will we start a fresh. [Post edited 21 Jul 15:42]

I think you can react to the lack of transfer business ahead of the new season in the context of its impact on preparing, but there is no point being concerned by who has gone and who is coming in until we’ve kicked off and we can see how they fit in and contribute.
If we start really slowly that might be vindication of concern over poor early transfer execution but not until 10-15 games and more importantly end of season can we see how new players are filling voids left by others. | |

Christ on a bike. Talk about being selective and focusing on three signings that didn't work out rather than the many signings we've made under Gamechanger that have worked out. No club has a 100% success rate with signings.
And nice pivot, you suggested Leeds' players all wanted to stay for a season, the reality was that nobody made them an acceptable offer for those players. And Gnonto may have scored against us but he's not really pulled up any trees overall the last couple of years so maybe they'd have been better off cashing in when he wanted to go. | |

He's an experienced head in the group, a Prem winner, Serie A winner, cup winner and given we're losing Morsy, we desperately need someone like him in the squad. I'd go as far as saying its 12 months too late, we needed someone of his ilk last summer ahead of our Prem campaign. |
I agree with you. Morsy was a good leader, but he had no experience of the Prem and so was, like the rest learning as he went. And as time went by he was really struggling to stamp his authority on games. That’s not great for the leader of the group. |  |

Obviously in an ideal world, we want ousquad at the start of July and that's that. However the reality is, it never works like that.
Look at the Premier League teams. There hasn't been too mch movement for them. Yes they have an extra week until the start of the season but still.
Surely in the markets we are looking at, the teams (presumably premier league teams) will want to get other people in before they'll let other players go or go out on loan? It's just a chain which is why some transfers spark other ones. And also, a lot of these happen towards the end of the window. unfortunately.

People were talking about names they were hearing were unbelievable, then we were expected told we’d be active, and things are certainly dragging on - been a bit of trend at times in the transfer market unfortunately.
There is a significant work still to be done, and we are certainly now playing catch up given we have 2 weeks left, and KMc is such an advocate of business done early.

Probably meant that we've known we were gonna give away our club captain for sod all, fail to get two of our defenders on new contracts and inevitably sell our two best attackers because of relegation release clauses.
