Meat is meat isn’t it? on 12:19 - Jul 22 by Nutkins_Return | You can bet your life this guy writing to Ipswich has another agenda. I do think though if we are going to kill and eat animals there has to be one way and that is the most humane way (if 2 equally humane ways fine). And religions can say any religious words beforehand no problem at all but anything that causes suffering that isn't required to an animal in that name of religion is completely unacceptable and shame on anyone doing it. |
Humane definition: 'Having or showing compassion or benevolence'. Given the above, how do you kill any healthy young animal humanely that doesn't want to die? There's not a single ounce of compassion or benevolence involved so it's impossible. People getting outraged because the animal isn't getting needlessly killed in the manner that THEY want it to (behind inaccessible and heavily guarded walls) is laughable. There's a reason that school kids have days out at farms and not slaughterhouses. Humane. It's a term used entirely for humans to feel better about what they do to innocent, sentient baby animals just for a sandwich or whatever. Cognitive dissonance is so strong in most. Put yourself in the victim's place and you'll view things entirely differently. How about choosing the 'extreme' option of just not eating animals at all?

Meat is meat isn’t it? on 11:33 - Jul 22 by EEJB | You are correct. You don't know much about Halal. The animals are slaughtered without being stunned (which is UK law) and bleed to death through having their throats cut. That alone is certainly not "treating the animal better" As noted by others the practice also means that other religious groups are excluded from eating the meat. IF the story is correct and the club is not telling people that the offering is "Halal" then they are entirely in the wrong and need to comment on the story ASAP to explain their thinking or debunk it. |
Tbh, if anyone really cared about animal welfare, they wouldn't be eating meat, without being 100% informed of the source and life journey of each animal. They certainly wouldn't be eating a chicken balti pie at a football ground.

Grow up. I said in the 'most humane way possible' IF we are going to eat meat. Why are you engaging me in a vegetarian or nothing debate. And why are you giving me the dictionary definition for Humane when I didn't say that. Clearly I'm saying IF we have to eat meat you kill them in the least distressing way possible. The only argument against that is that its fine to kill them any way and who cares how they die (which is ridiculous). You are just starting a different argument. Of course there can be a better and worse way to kill an animal. That's absolutely obvious. Nobody has come on here for a vegetarian/vegan debate. Personally I cut down meat a lot but I don't preach at others. I would just be disgusted if animals suffer more to make someone feel better for a religious purpose.

We don't have to eat meat though. Humans can survive and indeed thrive on a plant based diet. So I guess it comes down to whether a debate about which way we needlessly slaughter otherwise healthy animals for our own pleasure is really the important one to be having.

Several of my family are vegans or vegetarians. I've done my homework on pros/cons and health side (and we've all seen the documentaries on how you can be just as healthy and strong without meat.) It's not a fact though And it can be difficult to get exactly what you need and different bodies are different. You can live without for sure but I do a lot of sport and struggled with recovery for example without (yes I'm sure if I dedicate my life to finding other ways and tablets etc its possible. I cut down meat a lot and am happy with the balance). BUT this is hijacking a thread for a different agenda. I'm. not arguing vegetarian/vegan or not. You can absolutely care about animal welfare and be a farmer or a meat eater or a dairy eater etc. Would they care quite as much as you possibly not no because I applaud you not eating any. But it's not the argument here Coming on and saying I don't think it's right for animals to be killed in a worse way for religion and getting jumped on by the other poster is wild. My friends and family who don't eat meat don't behave like that. It's a sure fire way to NOT win hearts and minds toward becoming vegetarian with some people I assure you. Anyway. Not going to engage any further as this thread will go as expected and Phil will end up having to deal with it when people go overboard offending one and other.

That's a long post for someone who doesn't want to have a debate about the rights and wrongs of eating meat. And I'm not sure who made you arbiter of who can post what on a thread. The debate about whether we should be slaughtering animals at all is hardly a huge departure from the topic of the OP. Stop trying to shut down free speech, fam.

I'm not. You and the other poster have hijacked it and I'm allowed to choose to not engage further with someone as pretentious and belittling to others as you (consistently). The smug expression as you wrote the word 'arbiter' and felt pleased with yourself was palpable. Swing away now. Bye. ;)

You're doing a wonderful job of not engaging further. And it's not hijacking a thread that's about slaughtering animals to bring up the rights and wrongs of slaughtering animals. Maybe reflect on why you're so triggered here, mate.

I somewhat agree, although it’s possible to inflict less pain and trauma on an animal before killing it. That’s why there’s outrage when stories break of abattoirs mistreating animals. There are regulations for a reason (whether those regulations are sufficient is another matter). Agree it’s daft for people to get outraged because animals are not killed in a manner they want, especially if that’s based on religious grounds. We should just have the most humane approach possible as backed up by evidence. Although yes, ‘humane’ is a relative term, as they are killed at the end of the day. It’s hardly the Buddhist definition of compassion!

Meat is meat isn’t it? on 13:14 - Jul 22 by Herbivore | "No animal should be subject to death, for human purposes" would have been the correct sentence to go with. The stuff around "animal welfare" is noise to make meat eaters feel better about themselves. Factory farms in the UK are bleak despite how much we crow about our welfare standards, even what constitutes free range isn't great, certainly not much of an existence for the animals. Animals getting stunned is not all that pleasant either, the whole slaughter process - whether it's done "better" or not - is grim. If people really care about animal welfare, don't eat meat, dairy, or eggs. |

Humans can live perfectly well without meat and morally it is probably unethical to eat it. But I do and I can’t really justify it at all. I think that the most compelling argument against eating meat (well pork) is that a pig has the same IQ as a five year old. If that’s the case, then obviously they will know become perfectly aware of what awaits them at an abattoir. I find that quite sad and frightening but not enough to give up meat. In my opinion no one can call themselves an animal lover if they eat meat - you can’t say that- I love animals but I’m still going to allow the slaughter of millions of animals because I like the taste. Anyway, that’s my take.

Not quite true. Some people (albeit a small minority) do actually have to have a non-vegan diet, even if only sometimes, due to Ulcerative Colitis/Crohns disease flare-ups during which they're unable to tolerate any roughage in diet, including any form of nuts, seeds or pulses, ie plant forms of protein. Recent stat I saw said there are currently about 300K of us in the UK.
