Not sure we 'moved the goalposts' if the clause was for a large proportion or all of the fee upfront. We got 2/3rd of the Delap fee upfront for example. £35m over the life of the contract does nothing for us in terms of PSR. |  |

This is it. Cash flow is the issue. When we signed Hutch for £22.5m (all told) we could amortise that over the whole contract. If we sell him to Brentford, we can't amortise anything that isn't our asset, so for the books we have to declare the remaining value of the transfer, (lets say £18m).
But I don't think you are right that we put the full value of the sold player on the books if it is paid in instalments, I'm fairly confident we would have to put the instalment value, as incoming seasonal revenue.

I don't think it's anything particularly out of the ordinary, players try to force moves through and then things speed up and slow down - we've been on both sides of it in the past and will be in the future - if he's still here come August 8th then he'll be at St Andrews | |

For PSR and accounting purposes, we declare the full profit immediately. The payment schedule doesn't matter for PSR or for reporting profit and loss. The calculation is just the amount we are due to receive, minus the remaining player value that hasn't been amortised.
Think of it that as being paid some in cash, but some in IOUs. Those IOUs are legally binding and an IOU for £1m is still worth £1m cash and can be redeemed as such (when the time comes). |  | | |

The phasing of the payments makes no odds from a PSR perspective, both on signings and departures.
On signing, the transfer fee is spread over the length of the contract.
On selling, the profit (or loss) on disposal is recognised immediately.
That's more akin to typical accounting treatment of asset purchases & disposal.
The contentious element to the phasing of payments is more the 'real life' stuff, not the PSR calculations. Namely cash flow and the opportunity cost of capital. Imagine a scenario (1) where Brentford pay us £35m up front, that can sit in the bank in in other interests. Assuming a 5% return, that's £1.75m a year. Alternatively scenario 2 we get 1/3 of it each year for the next 3 and generate the same return. That effectively makes scenario 1 worth £40.5m vs. 2 worth £38.5m give or take. |  | | |
