I’m not sure who needs to hear this…. 09:36 - Aug 8 with 2604 viewsMatt_Netherlands

… but there’s a real chance that we lose tonight. (To be fair I think it’s mainly the Twitter lot who need to hear that.)

If that were to happen can we please agree no bed wetting, no meltdowns and no over reactions?

It’s a 46 game season. It’s Birmingham’s cup final. We still have some business to complete. Yeah it’s disappointing and not ideal if we lose or draw… but it’s not the end of the world.

Before the down votes come in this isn’t a “pre-flounce” it’s just trying to keep some people.

That all said, I predict a gritty 1-0 Town win.

We are going to do to them what Liverpool did to us.

They'll have a decent first half, the crowd lifts - we then go up 3 gears and ruthlessly show them the gulf involved.

We should have enough to control the game, IMO.
No doubt brum fly out of the traps, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we are 1-0 down before the 10min mark… however, if we are anything like we were 2 years ago we will grow into the game and get 3/4/5 really good chances.
It’s about who them chances fall to if late in the game - and for that I can’t decide if we win or draw the game.

I've not followed their transfer dealings too closely other than the Akpom drama.

Has their squad been through much churn compared to ours? Could be decisive - which side manages to gel the fastest.

Disagree about it being Birmingham's cup final, but agree everything else.

I'd gladly take a draw tonight.

If we don't win by at least three, my TV is going out the window.

More seriously though, Birmingham will come flying out of the blocks, as the match goes on I would expect our quality and squad depth to shine through. I'm prepared for an uncomfortable evening but also feeling optimistic that we'll get a positive result.

We couldn't really have asked for a tougher opening fixture, St. Andrews is always a hostile and volatile place to go, it will be loud tonight for sure, they are still on a crest of a wave and have an incredible home record to keep going. Live on TV, opening game of the season, a target on our backs, what could possibly go wrong.

that said, we need not fear anyone in this division, at our best we can win any game in this division, we have the quality to hurt them and we have a great opportunity to put a big marker down that we mean business.

Sadly we do have a small element of our fanbase that will think the end of the world is upon should we lose, they are about as knee jerk as you will find anywhere in Football, thankfully the large majority understand it's a marathon of a season and nothing is defined tonight no matter the result.

We just all need to stick together and remember the damn song we sing every game....

Don't just sing it, MEAN IT !!!!! COYB'S

Here's where I'm at.

This is a bit of a cup final to them, and if we were in their position, we'd be taking it the same way.

We all know what cup games are like, the better team should win, but doesn't always work like that.

I'm hoping we cope well with the occasion and show a good performance first and foremost. That's the indicator for me, because if you're performing well, more often than not, you come out on top and that's key in a 46 game season.

You can absolutely have days when you play well and don't win and that's oky.

Hoping we come out of the blocks fast and quieten them down, but make no bones about it, this isn't an easy game, like we weren't for Sunderland first game back.

Agree. I am not confident about tonight at all, but you never know. It feels like there’s lots of work to be done with more players leaving and hopefully arriving and I don’t sense the tight knit unit of two years ago. Probably my fears rather than how it is, since I actually have no idea.

Yes, it’s a long old season, so no need to think too much on tonight. Six games in we will have an indication of where we are and even then, it’ll only be an indication.

The trouble is the less objective of the supporters (the small but noisy minority) will not be interested in any of that. Lose tonight and the knives will be well and truly out. McKenna, players jostling for the top of the boo boys list and of course Ashton and his merry men. 2025 Social media, the way it is, sadly. Objectivity etc? Forget it.

Two seasons ago everything seemed to go our way, including a rather lucky opening win at Sunderland.

I don't think we can assume that will be the case this season, so I think everyone has to have a sense of perspective and be patient if things don't go our way initially.

The nature of the Championship is that you can lose any game if you don't turn up and perform or if things go against you. Although parachute payments sides have had an increasing advantage in recent years, it's still a league where anyone can beat anyone.

That said, and we're going to have a side tonight containing ten players who were playing in the Prem last season, and another who was playing in the French top flight. We have been playing at a very high level and although we need depth, we've kept most of our squad together. Brum will have a mix of players stepping up or back up to a level they were found out at last time. They've made some decent signings on paper but most haven't played at this level before and will be bedding into a new team. Basically, they are a big step down from the opposition our players have been used to competing with and we're a big step up for them.

The intangibles are in their favour. Home game under the lights. Lots of momentum and plenty of hype. Our poor record at St Andrews. Few injuries and uncertainty over a couple of players staying or going for us. But in pure footballing terms, we're better than them. I don't like this talk of surviving the first 20, they aren't going to be launching it forward for us to weather the storm, they're a more technical passing side. We should be better at that than them though. Go out there and stamp our authority early I say. Get an early goal, quiet the crowd, and pick them off on the counter.

So it's very much a game we could lose, it's also a game that won't ultimately define our season. But personally, I back us to go out there and get a good result. A point would be decent all things considered, but let's aim to make a statement and put them in their place.

I agree with the sentiment entirely of course. We can still get promoted, win the title even, having lost a tricky away match on the opening day.

However, I don't think it's at all fair to refer to this as Birmingham's Cup Final. This is the opening day of a long league season for both teams. Why should it be so for us, and not for them? They can lose today and still win the title, just like us. They are favourites for this match - this is not some plucky underdog. They were not out of the Championship for long, they spent big when they were down, and they bounced back emphatically. They are the bookies' third favourites for the title.

They would rightly view us as patronising and arrogant if we expect to win. One conclusion from that is that we shouldn't wet the bed if we lose. Another equally valid conclusion is that we shouldn't pretend that this match is some kind of exciting novelty one in a million day for them and not for us.

I'll take a gritty 1-0 win all day long.

They can’t dig up their own pitch like in 01’! Just let the boys settle, I reckon we’ll be a smooth running machine by November, I include predicting a Derby Day draw, but winning up there.

They'll certainly treat it as their cup final, we're favs to go straight back up so this is a big marker for them as to what to expect this season, they'll have high expectations after last season, momentum as we know is a huge thing to have so I'm honestly expecting them to finish in or around play offs, I'd take a draw I think right now, but saying that our attacking threat is is better now than it's ever been so quietly confident..

I'll keep off here after the game though if it turns into bad evening at the office..

I think the most important thing is that we control the controllables and be the best version of ourselves.

There's a lot of talk about their "momentum" but when was the last time they played a difficult game and had to dig in. For our lads that was every Saturday last season. Birmingham just had to show up to get 3 points.
Think we'll be at least 2 up by halft-time. They'll throw the kitchen sink at is early in second half and we'll escape with a 3-2 win or they'll nick a 3-3 draw.

I just remember how when we played Coventry it seemed like the game was being played in slow motion.

It’s football, an emotional game and the over-reactions and melt downs are one of the reasons we all love it.

I doubt that there would be a really adverse reaction to a narrow defeat after a decent performance but in the unlikely event that we were to get thumped or put in a poor performance then why shouldn’t fans react? Kieran (rightly after all he’s done during his time here) had pretty much unanimous backing throughout last season. The players who joined after our promotion to the Premier League also received a lot of support despite the fact that some of them were, to be honest, fairly under-whelming last season.

It’s the first game of the season, nothing is decided tonight and a defeat wouldn’t really be a shock (although I think we’ll get at least a draw). It’s not unreasonable to expect a decent performance, plenty of effort and hard work from the first minute to the last though. There were times towards the end of last season when the most important aspects of what has brought us success - togetherness, effort, hard work , belief - had gone. For some reason I decided to re-watch Leicester away recently. We were worse than I thought at the time. It was a woeful second half from us. Performances like that are not acceptable.

I have a feeling it might be a game like when Leeds came to Portman Road the season before last. We were very competitive but there was a 15 min spell where they just upped it and blew it open with 3 goals. I remember thinking at the time that they had that extra quality having just come down from the PL.

Hopefully we can do the same to Brum :)

Sorry, I meant cup final in terms of atmosphere and “glamour” around the game, not the actual importance of the football match itself.

I’m actually intrigued to see how good Birmingham are. They won league one at a canter although league one was arguably the weakest it’s been in a few years last season.

One of the toughest games of the season for me, a difficult place to play at in the best of times let alone after their last season and transfer window. We don’t feel fully ready, not helped by the injuries.

We still will be decent and could win but a defeat would not be a surprise at all.

Big game, strong opposition, intimidating atmosphere.

A loss would knock morale (which is probably already low). Win would be superb.

I'm thinking back to that League Cup semi final 2nd leg against Brum in 2001, where if memory serves the intimidation started in the tunnel. Hopefully better prepared this time. If there was 1 game this season we could recall 'Brummie' Morsy, it's this opener.
