McKenna not happy on 23:06 - Aug 8 by redrickstuhaart | The important thing to remember about our midfield is that it is two players. They cannot succeed without significant contributions from the full backs, a ball playing centre back (which we dont have) and the forward players. All of whom let them down. |
With the ball, I thought we really missed Woolfenden tonight. Other than the goal, and slightly fortunate disallowed goal, the defence was pretty sound at keeping chances to a premium. With a lack of wing options at the moment, I do wonder if we should switch to a back three. Know it will never happen, but... [Post edited 8 Aug 23:12]

If it wasn't for the feckin' knumbskulls we might actually be able to play our best keeper.

McKenna not happy on 22:56 - Aug 8 by FrimleyBlue | The problem it appears is thst it's almost like playing fm where you've brought a championship dream team but as a team it doesn't work. Clarke can't be clarke Sammy can't be Sammy Greaves. Well I don't see a calm ball playing cb and swipes at everything Complimented with some players who for what ever reason just doesn't work.. Johnson. Not a fullback. Taylor.. not a top champ midfielder We've got some excellent players.. but it just doesn't flow The league 1 side put together had ball players who all could get stuck in but also play and they did simple things like spraying the ball around into space for others. This dream team set up just doesn't flow and hasn't done since January really. |
Not sure I’ve ever brought into this Championship dream team tbh. How many of them were playing for top 6 championship teams? That of course doesn’t mean they aren’t good players but atm we don’t have any type of flow. I think when confidence hopefully comes back we will start to see things pop again and we will look much better but it’s hard to see where that comes atm after the last year. No need for panic but work to do.

It's not a dream team in regards to a team itself but more the players we brought based on their stats. You see philogene. Clarke. Sammy etc. Stat wise it's a championship dream lineup. And that's also how alot of pundits see it and why we are such favourites for the title. All week I've seen our forward lines stats from their last champ season. But I agree with you entirely about it

Agreed, not sure he’s suits our play and wanting to build out from the back effectively. He’s an old school keeper and probably quite a decent one. [Post edited 9 Aug 9:34]

McKenna not happy on 22:42 - Aug 8 by FrimleyBlue | Tbf. They showed him after their goal and he was angry clearly saying "fck me" Greaves. Palmer. Clarke all had a mare in the space of 5 seconds. Greaves has really got to step up this season. Esp now we've lost Burgess. |
Greaves was excellent last night apart from the goal. I think the criticism is being hugely overdone, defensively we were excellent and once we started knocking it about we looked much better than them. Couple new midfielders and a good option at 9 and we will be fine.

I like Greaves, and think he has great potential, but he gets himself caught the wrong side of the attacker far too often, and resorts to grappling and pulling back which will result in dangerous free kicks at best and cards and goals at worst. Needs to learn much better positional awareness, but I think he will. For their goal he drifted up field not anticipating Clarke was not going to win the header (blindingly obvious) and left two unmarked Brum players. I like him and he'll have a good season, but he has that one glaring weakness.

Nah. The first time was a foul by their CF who tbf is a very good player and the second time yes a mistake. I saw nothing to worry about in his performance other than he doesn’t link with Leif like Burgess did, although I think that soon will be irrelevant anyway. Greaves and O’Shea are a great pair and are gonna be the rock of our undefeated season!

Defensively we were fine except for the disallowed goal and their actual goal. There were a few issues there. We really struggled playing it out from the back. I thought we could have done with Woolfenden to help there - perhaps look to playing with a back three as our wingers were doing very little - but we got there in the end. It's slightly ironic our strongest area yesterday was central defence considering that's the one position where we have decent back up options. For me, we still need two central midfielders (three if we want Humphreys to start more games), a left back with Townsend out and I am really worried about our wide players. Ogbene and Clarke were really poor last night, Hutchinson is angling for a move, Philogene seems susceptible to knocks and has shown nothing to say he won't be another Clarke, Burns is out to November and Broadhead appears to be moving on. Awful to say considering the amount spent on them, but have we just looked to bring in, on paper, good players rather than ones which suit our style of play.

The little guy was giving him a torrid time first half. Got lucky several times. Burgess remains the better defender and links better with players ahead of him. Like prem sides last year, Brum were very happy to let him have the ball when he pushed up as well.
McKenna not happy on 10:41 - Aug 9 with 160 views | OldFart71 | I think our transfer window has been pretty poor and also with the likes of Morsy going and doubts surrounding Hutchinson. This will he, won't he situation not helping. Then you have carried over injuries from last season and one's already before the season had started not helping at all. Without a Philogene or a Hutchinson we are light on tricky type players and even with Cajuste coming in we may still require further buying or loan players to come in. It has for us been extremely difficult to get who we want through the doors of PR. Whether that's due to us aiming too high or whether there's more to it than that. There's been surprisingly little coming out from our owners and Mark Ashton. Have things turned a bit lukewarm since demotion ? I know it has been widely said that promotion was ahead of schedule, but perhaps due to the spending of some £130 million it was thought we should have done better. But then some of the Premier League teams are paying that for one player.

WBA fans said when we signed him on their forum he’s a good keeper at this level but his passing and distribution can be woeful. We looked like we couldn’t pass out from the back , no Morsy option in midfield , no raking balls down the left from Burgess, Palmer never seems to look to his left , there were times when Davis was in acres of space waiting for a throw which kept going to the right hand side. Look left ffs. Not convinced he’s the number one going forward , but is Walton, is Muric?

I'm not just talking about last night. Greaves has a habit of getting caught wrong side of an attacker. I like him a lot, he's a great ball winner and can carry it well too. It's a flaw that will be worked out, but I assure you that it's there. I totally agree with your last sentence, btw. And Leif's not going anywhere. [Post edited 9 Aug 13:52]
