Everton and West Ham are woeful 22:09 - Aug 18 with 2954 viewsChris_ITFC

It’s really not a sign of anything. Portman Road was rocking on day 1, we were rocking - just like Sunderland and Leeds. It’s just that we played Liverpool.

Compare that to Everton tonight - tactically horrendous, zero width except for their fullbacks (Garner and O’Brien!), zero goal threat, set out to defend and invite Leeds on, and a gift of a penalty.

Why not be glass half full and compare us to Burnley. Thrashed at Spurs… where we got a comfy 3 points. On that note - night all!

… were stacked against us

Don’t get me wrong we weren’t good enough… and that’s why we’re trying to get better players in

But West Ham without Kudus, Brentford without Frank, Bournemouth with so much talent stripped out, Everton failing to recruit

If we’d had Everton home first game of season, playing like we did against Liverpool. We win.

But it’s all water under the bridge. Key is to get back up there!

For sure, hopefully we recruit better and get a friendlier fixture list early doors

If we do go up, we return with a stronger squad than before which is the main positive

Sorry unstable, I like you, but along with the OP, this is sh1te.

We were a million miles away from West Ham and Everton last season, even when they were both poor.

We stunk that division out along with the other two we came up with. Our points tally was embarrassing. Hopefully we come back stronger and make a better fist of it.

Fair play to Sunderland and Leeds for starting well. Hope they can keep it up.

Except I don't think we were out of it until January at the earliest, first half of the season we had enough points to be outside the bottom three. That we were poor after that, especially at home, shouldn't remove context from the first half of the season.

We had Everton a few weeks later at home and they were struggling at the time under Dyche and yet that limited Everton side made us look a distant second in that game. Bottomline, however much we want to gloss things up, we just weren’t good enough last season.

They were both dreadful last season and we picked up a grand total of 1 point out of 12. It was actually the Everton home game that I realised it was a step too far for us. They had been a shambles for so long, yet rocked up and barely got out of 1st gear against us.

I've seen loads of these posts in the last couple of days. Just all seems a bit pointless now.

Hopefully we can get back there and give it a better shot. Doesn't seem much point thinking about what could have happened.

That's because other sides started poorly, however they improved (Everton, Wolves, West Ham, Crystal Palace) and we did not.

We competed for periods in matches but just were not good enough, for me the home defeat against Everton was probably when the realisation sank in that we are some way off one of the poorer sides in the division.

It was not all bad though, I think there was a lot learned last year, about recruitment, playing styles, mental fortitude etc.

I do wonder if the lesson about not getting worked out too easily, being able to adopt different tactics for different circumstances (which can change within the same match and not just from game to game and between different sides) as well as tactically substituting earlier both for impact and for easing the new players into the game without disturbing the patterns of our play that are working well, have been learned ?

Easy for me to say as a spectator and I am sure that McKenna and his team do a lot of this but it seems they might not do enough all the same.

Yeah, but they’re both light years ahead of us. We’ve lost our 7 best players since they were too big, too strong, and too technical for us.

And signing players with top flight experience has already equalled our entire season of buying ‘young EFL players’ that we can’t retain.

Also true. There’s a glass half full case compared to EFL teams, 100%…, but strategically, planning and contingency wise, we have been and remain, woefully poor.

They’ve done in one week what it took us a season, and that isn’t a unified opinion, it’s a measure of the only metric that actually counts…, league tables.

Happy clapping Mark Ashton might be worth an uppy (until it’s not) but 100% of the evidence says the long term planning and strategy is SO poor and that’s literally his most important job.

Yes, we got worse as the season went on & clearly the sequence of defeats became self-fulfilling. I think there's still a bit of a hangover from that & McKenna has a job on to get back the winning mentality. 2 wins against Preston & Derby would help as well - it's always a bit chicken & egg.

I think that was especially the case at home, the number of different ways we found to lose successive home matches has to have had a bit of an impact on players and fans - and I thought there was some nervousness because of that on Sunday.

The sooner we get some wins the better, in that regard our traditional half-arsed defeat to a lower league team in the cup wasn't helpful.

Why compare us to anyone, Leeds, Sunderland, Burnley, Sheffield Utd, Luton, Saints. I've seen it so much, whether it now be how newly promoted teams are doing, or parachute clubs performance after relegation.

We are our own club, we are on our own journey, doing our own thing - not in comparison to anyone, handle our own business.

We weren't good enough last season, it wasn't complicated - we didn't build a good enough squad, technically or physically - a lesson learnt.

Now we have to earn the right to right them wrongs, by getting back to the big time.

Spending the season analysing every twist and turn of the promoted clubs, or doing a deep dive into our failings every time they pick up points, will become very tedious, very quickly.

Agree - I have no interest in how any newly promoted team is doing, or how newly relegated teams have done.

I'm only concerned about us, how we do, how we perform, how we are developing, how we are improving - this season, next season and beyond.
