… for Hayden Hackney.

‘The midfielder turned down a proposed £20m move to Portman Road last month but Ipswich haven't given up.’

Maybe, just maybe, there was and is a lot more to it than just He turned up and said no?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Let's question who benefits from this story being public-

Is it Ipswich Town? No, they're happy if the deal happens behind closed doors
Is it the player? No, as far as we know he's happy to stay

Is it Boro? Hmm. Well it's added on at the end of an article about Southampton bidding for Azaz, another midfielder. Wouldn't it be interesting if two of the relegated sides were both looking to buy a midfielder from Boro? It's not an exact bidding war but it's close- both sides are told "look, we only need to sell one of our star midfielders... so who of you is going to offer more?"

Could also be zero truth in the Azaz story and they're just trying to force Town's hand

Just realised the last line of the article specifically says this:

"However, if Azaz leaves then it is highly unlikely Hackney will be allowed to go too with Boro reluctant to sell both."

I think the message is clear

We're clearly offering a significant salary uplift but he's clearly hoping for a prem offer which may or may not transpire. I don't know which way it falls if I'm honest. Phil has quashed Billing so hopefully we're all in on Hackney. All our eggs in the basket for him remains a concern. We'll never know what was initially said though, just what was "reported".

Just said this to my mate hula hoop John on twitter…

Weirdly just spent a day on a boat trip with a massive Boro fan
Tells me Hackney has no interest in playing for another championship team, and might as well stay at Boro, only wants a PL team. The £35/40k wage we offered didn’t interest him as not PL or Boro…

I mean could all be BS, but actually liked that a player was showing loyalty.

No surprise. Even if we have to wait until Jan I think he'll join.

I genuinely don’t understand why people seemed surprised by a move being made for him again.

Hackney took a look, liked the project (or didn’t), but was still holding out for a prem move with a bit of time left in the window. Left the door open for us to go back in.

We can probably offer him a little more now from the Omari sale, no Prem move looks to be on. I can still see him in a Town shirt over the next few weeks.

Alternatively, none of this is true and he told us to do one and it’s agent talk drumming up interest again.

I struggle to see how he would have no interest in joining us given that a) we must’ve had some indication earlier in the window that he’d join, otherwise why waste time putting together a £15m-£20m package for him and b) why would he waste his time coming to view the training ground/ground if he hadn’t been impressed by conversations he’d had with McKenna and Ashton.

I can understand that he would rather wait to see if a Prem club comes in for him, but given the window shuts in 10 days or so, and no Prem club have been forthcoming (to our knowledge) these past 3 weeks, you’d imagine we again have had indication he’s willing to talk again should we make a new approach.

I just cannot believe for 1 minute we’d spend all this time on a transfer knowing he wouldn’t want to join.

I think if he/his agent had wanted it left open then the article that was briefed to their local press would have had a different tone to it. It seemed to be a fairly definitive no.

True, but it’s 3 times in 2 days that we’ve been linked with a new offer, so it’s either his agent briefing relevant parties to get other teams to hurry along, or that they are genuinely interested in revisiting those talks as Prem clubs haven’t come to the table.

We probably should stop bidding against ourselves now. He wants PL and does not matter how much we offer. Similarly if he does not get his wish, we have made a good offer and if he does not want to leave , so be it.

In the words of Kenny Rodgers, " You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.
Know when to walk away and know when to run"

We might have thought there was proper interest… he might have always been on the fence.
That’s the only thing I can think of.
Again, as said on Twitter, I’ve gone to look at houses, even got as far as getting an offer ready… knowing full well I wasn’t even 50% up for it (missus pushing it - so in his case could have been Boro and/or agent)
And Boro probably could do with £18/22m to build their squad - like Dyer and ITFC in 1999/2000

I think there may be truth in that … but I don’t see why we would need to make another approach/bid to Boro

Not sure there would be any need to offer more as the fee and terms were agreed, was just his decision not to come here. Agree, though, it would be no surprise if we had another ask in the next week if he's not gone anywhere by then, and no surprise Boro might be expecting that to be the case.

Heart warming to know he'll settle for us if he doesn't get a better offer.

Feels a bit like the time at school when a girl said if she wasn't married by 30 she would go out with me. Don't get me wrong, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, but its a bit of a double edge compliment innit.

Buzzing for the 'its taken a long time to sort but this is where I've always wanted to be' 1st presser.

I'm absolutely sick and tired of this. It's all anyone says about any deal. Well the approach can be to see if we get any encouragement you see, it's quite simple.

It's just human nature. We are on the wrong side of the void, if we are interested then it's massively likely that a team on the 'more money and more exposure' side will at least want to look at them.

Maybe it would be more damning on the player if they were straight here as quick as they can and signing within hours of a sniff. Why don't those players at least want to try and look higher up than us?!

I would certainly be happy to be his reserve option if no premier league team comes for him.

However, given that his current side already has three times as many point as us, he may take the view that Boro isn't such a bad place to be in order to either advertise his services to a Prem club, or even get to the Prem with them. I don't think we should be making any assumptions that we're going to be better equipped to win this league than Boro are right now.

I know a lot of people are upset at the Delap and Omari sales this summer and release clauses but maybe it’s a way to get Hackney in the door.
Doesn’t want to move to another Championship club but maybe if we put in a clause that if we don’t go up should a Premier ship club come in that appeals to him we won’t stand in his way as long as we make a bit from the deal.
We get the player we want he gets the chance to get to the Premiership with or without Town it’s a win win for both parties.
