Jack Clarke - Bad recruitment, not bad player. 18:33 - Aug 23 with 2135 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

1. When he was at Sunderland, he played as an out and out left winger, whose one trick was to cut inside and score. The whole team was set up to focus on him.

2. We bought him in and don't have a position for him to do what he did at Sunderland. We bought a square peg for a round hole.

3. He was settled at Sunderland, and I understand he struggled to settle at Ipswich. He could probably commute to Sunderland from York. He excelled at Leeds and Sunderland, when close to home. He failed at Tottenham and Ipswich when a long way from home. Maybe he doesn't adjust well to being a long way from home.

4. Send him on loan to Boro, Sheff Utd or Hull, where he can be settled closer to home, and hopefully recover some form.

Who is going to take him?

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if a Burnley type took him on loan. I

Didn't they?

It's an interesting call - you could even potentially see him going back to Sunlan, if nothing else he will be going back to a warm welcome - the Mackems adore him.

He's been a colossal, huge disappointment; arguably as poor, all told, as Muric, when considering the money spent and his apparent absolute inability to fit into this McK team.

Our recruitment this past 15 months has been mainly awful.

Of course he does, he was at Wembley in May as well.

Banged the drum on this for 12 months, received pelters.

Sometimes the glove doesn’t, it’s not the first time good players have been bad fits for clubs. The trio of Broady, Chaplin, Burns worked seamlessly, it was going to be difficult to replicate when we decided to replace them.

You can see right now it’s not clicking on that front line, would argue none of the trio of Szmodics, Philogene or Clarke look a fit as is, and when that has cost you over £40m it’s a big problem.

Why wouldn’t he? He was loved there and played in his best position. He was devastating. He is a long way from home, played out of position and heckled by the haters. I’d want away if I was him as long as I was paid my contracted dough.

He should have buried that chance today.

Probably our best chance.

He's not 'heckled' by anyone - the support he gets, in person anyway, is good, despite his poor performances.

He has been a colossal disappointment.

I think it unlikely he is going to find the form we need to get out of this division.

Would Sunderland consider having him back, or have they moved beyond him now?

I reckon I’ve done more steps today walking to and from the ground than him. Absolutely rubbish performance and walks around like he doesn’t want to be here.

Yeah it's the body language and off the ball movement that's rank bad. A few times today I genuinely thought he was throwing in the towel on purpose. Cutting the image of someone feeling sorry for themselves but not prepared to make things change for the better.

I've tried to be patient with him but one thing today got me. Azor shoots. Takes deflection bounces about 15 yards away from the keeper who walks onto the bounce to claim it.. Clarke was stood there staring at it and didn't move an inch. I can't not for the life of me understand what KM is hoping to get from clarke. He's not showing any signs of improving for us in the league. He gets worse on the ball, lazier off it and if teams get anywhere near our box he's to busy pulling his shorts up to care about late runners into our box.

15 mill. I'd rather we brought Jackson back.

He seems to wander over to the bench on 70 minutes knowing he's being subbed. Doesn't want to be here.

Only played through sunk cost fallacy.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Yup, I’m not exaggerating when I say I genuinely can’t recall him running. Constantly walking about. It actually hindered us today when he was just walking about instead of getting into a position and being an option out wide.

He's got this weird habbit where opponents were playing short passes around him and he was bobbling up and down like he was doing a warm up. Very weird

I missed the game today due to other commitments so cannot comment on JC's performance today.

Overall though, I agree with the sentiment that JC has not earned his transfer fee at this point. Just seems like he has not found his natural place in the team nor the "connections" needed with others. When he does get the ball he tends to run into the defenders without an idea of what he needs to do and then gets dispossessed way too easily.

I thought against Saints he was getting more room on the right side to get some speed up but again lacks any final product.

We have to remember these are very young men with a lot of weight on their shoulders, while we can see what is happening on the pitch we cannot see where their minds are. Whether that be carrying a knock or just lacking confidence in themselves which in my experience in sport is huge, in terms of big game players almost being super arrogant in their abilities.

This is where we need some senior pros to help the younger players. I would hope the likes of Ashley Young can put an arm around them and help them through tough times and get their confidence/head space right.

Having said that, I do think Clarke needs some time out of the limelight to work on his overall game and presume that is why McAteer is onboard.
