Rayner resigns 13:04 - Sep 5 with 4245 views | Mullet | A feather in the cap for the hypocritical right and a loss to British politics. A shame she’s gone but it shows a moral fibre that’s rarer these days in politics.

Rayner resigns on 13:10 - Sep 5 with 2235 views | GlasgowBlue | It's a great shame she's gone. I can't help but think that had she not attempted t throw her advisors under the bus then she may have survived by claiming an honest mistake. I don't think she comes out of it well by causing her law firm reputational damage.

Rayner resigns on 13:12 - Sep 5 with 2193 views | chicoazul | Starmer reinforces his comms team with a Blairite big dog and a few days later his main cabinet rival is knifed. The system protects itself at all costs.

Rayner resigns on 13:13 - Sep 5 with 2184 views | baxterbasics | Or alternatively, a feather in the cap for The Telegraph who held power to account after No 10 (or the office of Angela Rayner, I forget) issued a false statement on the matter to make it go away.

Rayner resigns on 13:16 - Sep 5 with 2131 views | bsw72 | Exactly, credit to her she resigned with minimum fuss but we need more people like her in gvmt who have worked outside of politics before they embark on their political career. I think that gives a better balanced view, if I am not wrong her route into politics was through the Unison trade union while working as a care worker . . . plus she has balanced her career with some significant personal challenges. However, she was a very "marmite" individual, and I do think it does now allow Starmer to make some cabinet changes which can work in his favour through public perception/popularity. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Rayner resigns on 13:16 - Sep 5 with 2129 views | BloomBlue | She lied about seeking the appropriate advice, where is the moral fibre in that? It even seems she was told to go and obtain tax advice and didn't.

Did she lie or did she think she’d got it right and acted when she’s got it wrong? Given the Trumpian world we live in where the Right simply attack others and deflect, she hasn’t. If she was an old Etonian male she’d be fine I suspect.

Rayner resigns on 13:27 - Sep 5 with 2043 views | baxterbasics | Also, even ignoring the rights and wrongs of the tax situation, how does someone in her position manage to accumulate that much wealth? Career as a union rep and then MP / minister shouldn't be quite so rewarding. Similar to the millionaire Jeremy Corbyn and his career as an agitator at taxpayer expense. Realise it's not just about these individuals but the whole parliament / government gravy train.

I wonder why we never hear this when the Tories are in power?

The Tories should rightly be called out for thier blatant noses in the trough at all times, as they are self serving parasites. However, Rayner has blatantly lied by saying she sought Tax advice from 3 separate companies, who all in turn denied they gave her advice as they don't operate in that legal space. So they've had to come out and defend their reputation, she's basically thrown a load of people under the bus in the hope she can cling on, classic MP behavior. Add the fact that shes taken a substantial sum of her sons trust/payout to put down a deposit on a place 300 miles from her constituency. I'm sorry, but she's no better than the the Tory MP's we chastise. We should call it for what it is, regardless pf political party stance. [Post edited 5 Sep 13:41]

At least she did the honourable thing and fell on her sword. A tory would have just toughed it out. I am looking at you Baroness Mone.

In fairness I didn’t realise it was three, I thought it was a straight denial from one side to the other. That does change things in that respect.

Define "that much wealth", I'm curious.
Rayner resigns on 13:48 - Sep 5 with 1846 views | MattinLondon | She broke the ministerial code and therefore had to go. We can’t say that it’s unfair because she isn’t of the Tory right. She broke the rules, tried to blame a law firm but failed. Therefore she had to go. It’s a bit like a seemingly fair player who gets sent-off through foul play. It doesn’t matter that they don’t normally do wrong, in the moment tbey did - therefore her position was untenable. She’ll probably be back within a couple of years.

No. She definitely tried to blame her advisors when she got caught out. As soon as they set the record straight she was toast.

It was right for her to resign, but your statement is ridiculous, and I suspect deliberately inflammatory.

Was a no win situation for her once the news broke, just a case of how long she survived and whether she resigned or got sacked. If she had turned round straight away and said "it's a fair cop guv" then everyone would have slammed her for just trying to game the system. By at least falling back on the loose advice she was given, then it strengthens the look of being a mistake, and a desperate attempt to keep her job.

That's an awful thing to say. She got to the top despite the odds. Her father was rarely around. Her mother is bipolar and barely coped. She was like a mother to her younger siblings whilst a teenager. She is a fantastic example of how your life isn't pre determined by your background. [Post edited 5 Sep 14:01]
