Banksy 20:33 - Sep 10 with 2873 views | wrightsrightglove | Has this been discussed? Really powerful bit of artwork which they’ve now tried to remove but it’s only made it even more powerful in a classic Banksy way. Makes me wonder whether he’s used some form of paint / technique where he knew they’d try and remove it and he knew exactly how it would look after they tried to do so? Could prove to become more famous than the shredder incident

Banksy on 07:16 - Sep 11 with 1679 views | RIPbobby | I like the point banksy is trying to make, but it's factually incorrect as judges in the UK don't have gavels. Perhaps he knew this and was just trying to make a point. Maybe it would not work so well had the judge punched him.

The law is being used to suppress dissent, politicians make them, judges enact them, what is Banksy missing in his symbolism?

it's worse than trite. it's cliched and unchallenging - it's conformist, safe, unoriginal, and going along with the dominant middle class political world view. there's nothing vaguely unexpected in it. the reaction of everyone who thinks it's great will be "oh yes, i agree with that." if that's what he trades in why doesn't he just stick it on a tea towel or a biscuit tin? but doubtless his bank account will benefit from the publicity. i hope they're passing on to him the cost of repairing the damage to a grade 1 listed building.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

It depends how you view it (which is the point of a piece of art and not the front page of a newspaper). Turning it around, could anyone think of better, more impactful symbolism to portray the legal crackdown on peaceful protest? I can’t think of a caricature of a politician that everyone would instantly associate with law-makers. You could have had policeman, but again it’s the law that’s the issue. Hopefully people understand it’s not about judges per se, but rather the process that’s rotten. And there’s nothing that incites anything against a named individual, unlike the newspaper front page.

I hate cliches and I see nothing cliched in it. And the fact that it's caused a discussion on here (and seemingly riled you) proves it's challenging. The fact that you think damage to a wall is more problematic than people's rights to protest being eroded is a challenging and non-cliched discussion point brought up by this art.

Yup I was listening to an R4 discussion about attacks on the judiciary the other day and the Banksy thing was cited as an example of how they can come from the left as well as the right. The art incorrectly suggests it is judges responsible for the over-repression of protestors (if of course you believe this is the case, as Mr Banksy seems to). Politicians decide the law, judges only see that it is followed. Although you can argue it's just symbolic, and there's not really an easy way to visually depict the legislature as an individual. But may be unhelpful.

Maybe the Liberty statue from the Old Bailey? And stabbing with the sword while the scales are weighted with an IDF tank on one side and a shrouded child on the other? And peaking from under her blindfold so she can strike effectively? But I think the original is a great piece of Agit-prop, which is what Banksy does. Immediacy is a key part of Banksy's philosophy.

where have i said that i "think damage to a wall is more problematic than people's rights to protest being eroded"? arguing against the erosion of the right to protest while at the same time opposing vandalism to our national heritage by the hackneyed daubs of a self-promoting multi-millionaire are not in anyway incompatible. cliched is defined as "showing a lack of originality; based on frequently repeated phrases or opinions" and nothing describes bansky better. he makes his millions and runs his business by quoting back their own opinions to the privileged classes to that they can say "oh he thinks the same as me and everyone i know - he must be clever, and if he's clever we must be as well". seldom have the emperor's new clothes been worn with self-congratulatory smugness to match that of banksy. As you have chosen to define every other phrase I am wondering if you can trouble yourself to define what and who are 'the privileged classes' ?
