It depends how you view it (which is the point of a piece of art and not the front page of a newspaper). Turning it around, could anyone think of better, more impactful symbolism to portray the legal crackdown on peaceful protest? I can’t think of a caricature of a politician that everyone would instantly associate with law-makers. You could have had policeman, but again it’s the law that’s the issue.
Hopefully people understand it’s not about judges per se, but rather the process that’s rotten. And there’s nothing that incites anything against a named individual, unlike the newspaper front page. |  |

I hate cliches and I see nothing cliched in it. And the fact that it's caused a discussion on here (and seemingly riled you) proves it's challenging. The fact that you think damage to a wall is more problematic than people's rights to protest being eroded is a challenging and non-cliched discussion point brought up by this art. | |

Yup I was listening to an R4 discussion about attacks on the judiciary the other day and the Banksy thing was cited as an example of how they can come from the left as well as the right.
The art incorrectly suggests it is judges responsible for the over-repression of protestors (if of course you believe this is the case, as Mr Banksy seems to). Politicians decide the law, judges only see that it is followed. Although you can argue it's just symbolic, and there's not really an easy way to visually depict the legislature as an individual. where have i said that i "think damage to a wall is more problematic than people's rights to protest being eroded"? arguing against the erosion of the right to protest while at the same time opposing vandalism to our national heritage by the hackneyed daubs of a self-promoting multi-millionaire are not in anyway incompatible. cliched is defined as "showing a lack of originality; based on frequently repeated phrases or opinions" and nothing describes bansky better. he makes his millions and runs his business by quoting back their own opinions to the privileged classes to that they can say "oh he thinks the same as me and everyone i know - he must be clever, and if he's clever we must be as well". seldom have the emperor's new clothes been worn with self-congratulatory smugness to match that of banksy.
