Was listening to yesterdays News Agents podcast on this, they had a crime journalist on this who has covered marches like this in the past.
His view that most people on this were relatively normal, certainly not like NF marches previously and this is why they've gone from getting a few hundred, and a most a few thousand to 100-150k people.
But that these people were now parroting far right tropes - claiming that Immigrants were 20x more likely to be sex offenders, and that it was turning into North Korea, and that Charlie Kirk is a hero, etc. All this stuff is far right talking points and int he first 2 cases demonstrably untrue, and the 3rd is just online talk and not from the real world whatever your opinion of him is - and that brand of ultra Christian fundamentalist belief is just not something we have in the UK.
Their view is that the likes of the BBC are just sleepwalking - that they try to reflect what the people are interested, but ignore the fact that people are interested because someone like Elon Musk is elevating all this rubbish across social media, and they don't realise that he is putting a foghorn on things which in realisty are not important or true.
All this talk of 'Free Speech', this march was in London which must be one of the most tolerant, liberal cities in the world.
99% of the people on the march aren't the ones frothing at the mouth at the front of it, but these dangerous lies are being allowed to spread and infect peoples thinkings.
Tommy Robinson is an out there racist, that Elon Musk is pushing him and sharing a platform with him, and pushing his messages is dangerous.
The Centre/left/Liberals need to stand as one and push back against this, Labour need to lead this - as currently they are letting this fester - that this many people were on a march led by a known racist like Robinson is worrying; we can't let social media and the billionaire class continue to set the agenda, because they are not normal, not like us and not right with what they say |
I've just read the whole thread (very depressing) but this is the post of the thread for me. What an awful state of affairs we're living through.
I also watched the creator of Andor, Tony Gilroy, do an interview with Bulwark on my lunchbreak and a good half of it was dedicated to him having to state that he didn't attempt to directly write something that mirrors the times we're living through - he took from multiple examples throughout real life history where fascists and far right powers seized control.
When he was questioned about the politics of the show he said that much like the politics of now it has transcended left and right- it's now about morality.
Misinformation has absolutely poisoned the well and the fear and division sewn and the way "the pace of oppression outstrips our ability to understand it" has put many people into a level of passiveness that is totally counterproductive to fixing this mess.

Is there a certain point that where the boats get intercepted where by they either come here, or be taken back to France?
I’m assuming there is, however, I wonder is the French might ‘accidentally’ not see them until it’s too late |
There is a median line i think between France and England. But it's not strictly adhered to in terms of migrants being picked up and returned to whichever country dependent on which side of the line they were picked up. RNLI for example have been known to go into French waters to collect migrants and bring them to UK. |  |

I don't know about anyone else but, with recent developments and with 45% of people in a YouGov survey saying they would support requiring large numbers of migrants who came to the UK in recent years to leave, I have been going out of my way in my dealings with black, brown or eastern European people to be as polite, smiley and friendly as possible.
I'm like that anyway in my dealings with people anyway but I have lifted it up a notch in recent months because I want to make them think I am not one of the 45%.
It is all rather sad that it's come to this.

Hard agree with all of this.
Starmer and Labour have spent the last 6 months pandering to these people, and in effect encouraging and legitimising it. Hopefully, based on his comments since the weekend, the penny has dropped about what he has basically supported.
None of that means that everything is great, and people are wrong to have concerns about immigration (or anything else), but if you are letting Tommy Robinson and Musk set the tone of the national debate then you have royally fooked things up. |  |

something i have posted several times but i have never received an answer is, given that we have had a housing crisis for the past decade plus, how over the most recent four year period have we accommodated an additional (NET) 3 million people through immigration? how has that been possible without making the housing crisis worse? and if that is possible and we can magically house an additional 3 million people without any negatives, then in what sense is there a housing crisis? really?
in addition, in a great many local authority areas a majority of social housing tenants are now foreign nationals. in many areas it's as much as two thirds.
do you not see that not being able to, or their children not being able to, get access to local social housing, and being priced out of other options, while seeing a high proportion of social housing occupied by foreign nationals, genuinely concerns a great many people. they haven't fallen for rhetoric, they aren't relying on daily mail headlines - it's what they can see. So, speaking for the area I know around Suffolk coastal. Rents are through the roof, social housing almost inaccessible, infrastructure decaying, gp and dentist appointments, what's a dentist!! And yet no noticeable invasion of foreigners, how is it in Laxfield? | |
